NFL Free Agency Open Thread: Signings at 6 PM
Today should be a big day when it comes to free agency news. Teams can officially sign players at 6:00 PM EST on Friday. We'll see if the Cleveland Browns have made any moves that they have kept off the radar up until now.
The big news yesterday for me was Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco going to the New England Patriots. Those players have to be loving the situation they have just been put in. Running back Darren Sproles went to the New Orleans Saints to make their offense even more explosive. Offensive guard Davin Joseph stayed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They also gave the former punter of the Falcons almost $20 million over six years. Reggie Hodges is kicking himself for signing an extension last year. The Giants' Osi Umenyiora wants to be traded, which is something we'll be following today.
Use this post as an open thread for all of today's action.

Not quite, loser.
Also, there are guys like Carlos Rogers or Chris Houston that wouldn’t cost nearly as much as Nnamdi/Cromartie.
Plenty of tackles too.

Actually Michael Koenen signed the big contract with Tampa Bay….
Sub-thread question for DBN:
What would you give up for Osi in a trade with NYG and what contract would you give him if you did acquire him?
What would you give up for Osi in a trade with NYG and what contract would you give him if you did acquire him?
Nothing. I don’t want to give up what little and young talent we have, especially with a free agency feeding frenzy that’s going on now. Instead, try harder for these good players that don’t require trading for.

I’ve never “complained” about his character. I’ve brought up his character in order to point out the hypocrisy of the Little fellating that has commenced. The high and mighty attitude used when looking at the character of other players in the league, and the constant praising of the FO for acquiring “good guys”; both of which DBN so often do, then all of a suddenly acting as if Little’s concern are nothing worth noting.

Who has been inconsistent with regards to Little? Bernie, who has been the most vocal “I can’t are about Little’s character” guy has advocated us signing Jamarcus Russel. Others like myself and NTN are concerned but willing to see if Little has matured. Yet others (like Golan) are very high on character and think Little is worthless.

I’m all about building through the draft but who in the hell is gonna start at all these positions we have no one? We have at least 7 postions that need major upgrades (DT, DE, OLB,CB,S,WR,RT), that’s realistically gonna take about 3 more drafts to do unless they hit big on some late round picks and no early picks turn into busts. I wish they’d splash some money around on at least 2 or 3 good quality starters. I don’t want another startover in 3 seasons.
We have two solid starters at DT. I’m comfortable with our linebackers, but we could use a playmaker. We’re fine at corner for at least one more season. Pashos would be fine at RT if he could stay healthy, but depth is a major issue.
Basically, our problem is that we have a team full of average. We need a few playmakers.
"An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools" -Hemingway
by notthatnoise on Jul 29, 2011 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions
This is a huge exaggeration. We have two starters at DT, one at DE, three linebackers, two cornerbacks, two safeties, three 2nd round wide receivers. So in the end as far as starters go we need a RT because Pashos is probably going to get hurt and a DE.

We also need depth at many of the positions you described but that’s not the same as needing starters.
by BrownsFanRegina on Jul 29, 2011 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions
We may have 1 starter at DT if Phil Taylor pans out, Smith would be a backup on just about any other team in the league so I don’t consider him solid. Fujita is old but should have a few seasons left in him, but Chris Gocong is also a backup. Sheldon Brown is old and slow as dirt, he would be a good nickel but not as the #2 CB. Who’s our other safety? Usama Young?, also a backup. If Greg Little is good as advertised we should be good at WR. We have a team full of backups. If we signed 1 or 2 good FA’s to come in and start the guys we already have could be used to add depth. Then 1 or 2 good drafts we should be pretty solid on both sides of the ball.
you clearly didn’t catch a draft where we drafted guys at 3 of those positions, two of which could be starting right away.

Edwards’ contract sounded fairly reasonable. I hope we get Clements and Huff. We will have a nice defensive backfield and with our pass rushers, we’ll need it.

At some point they HAVE to spend money just to hit the salary floor required in the new CBA. That’s what’s driving me a little nuts. After cutting Jake, don’t they need to spend somewhere in the $25-28M range just to hit the minimum? Unless they sign the Savior to his well-deserved richest-extension-in-the-history-of-everything, it feels like the plan is to sign the eighth-best available player at each position and punt next year. well if he has the skill then its just a matter of fixing the 5 inches between his ears. Maybe he didn’t like all the pressure and crowdedness of NYC/NJ? The net savings of plus-$2.3 million (after releasing Delhomme) pushes the Browns to over $35 million in available room under the $120.3 million team cap. Nevertheless, Heckert remained adamant on not spending it on unrestricted free agents.
…
“If there’s a good player, we’re going to go after him. But we’re not going to just sign a bunch of guys because they’re available,” Heckert said.
…
“There’s always exceptions to the rule. Last year, were we active? That’s probably the most active we’re ever going to be.”
…
“We’ve talked with a zillion guys the last couple days. We don’t expect to be signing a bunch of guys,” Heckert added. “Cap room’s not an issue. We’d much rather spend it on our young players we like right now, that we have right now. We’ll spend it. There’s not a question of us spending the money.”

Yeah, sure sounds like the Patriots (Haynesworth, Ochocinco) and Eagles (Nnamdi, DR-C). Ha.

Three trades and the best FA on the market. I don’t see how that relates to throwing money at guys because they are available.
I’m sure if Nnamdi wanted to come to Cleveland, we would have signed him.

I’m sorry, I was responding to this:
The net savings of plus-$2.3 million (after releasing Delhomme) pushes the Browns to over $35 million in available room under the $120.3 million team cap. Nevertheless, Heckert remained adamant on not spending it on unrestricted free agents.
…
"If there’s a good player, we’re going to go after him. But we’re not going to just sign a bunch of guys because they’re available," Heckert said.
…
"There’s always exceptions to the rule. Last year, were we active? That’s probably the most active we’re ever going to be."
…
"We’ve talked with a zillion guys the last couple days. We don’t expect to be signing a bunch of guys," Heckert added. "Cap room’s not an issue. We’d much rather spend it on our young players we like right now, that we have right now. We’ll spend it. There’s not a question of us spending the money."
Sounds like a whole bunch of defeatism and rationalisation to me.

Why? A lot of our roster is truly awful and this was the best free agency we’re probably ever going to see.

"I want my unwarranted optimism back." -Dilbert
It’s 99% of the entire league, or more bonuses kick in to the players. If only a couple of teams stick around 90% and the rest hit 99-100% and keep the overall level at 99%, then the owners are fine.
by NonDairyKreemer on Jul 29, 2011 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions
The Browns need to make an effort to promote the brand nationally if they want big name free agents to get excited about coming here to play.
However, if the Browns build the team through the draft and developing no-name FAs, then they’ll be fine, even if they aren’t splashy right now.
It hasn’t worked up til now. We aren’t fine, we are struggling. They need to start turning it around right now.

IMO I don’t think we’re going to make any big moves. Perhaps when this so-called frenzy has died down a bit, we’ll sign a few of the cheaper vets (that get stuck without a chair when the music when the music stops) for depth. I just get the feeling TH is not going to overspend on FA’s that aren’t going to be a part of the team’s future plans.
That’s what we always do and it has gotten us nowhere.
by Aussie Brown on Jul 29, 2011 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I see your point, but every dynasty built over the last 30 years was done thru the draft. 49ers, Cowboys, Pats, and (as much as it pains me to admit) Stoolers. All used draft picks like poker chips trading players and picks for more picks. The draft is something pilots refer to as a BEWAG (best educated wild a$$ guess). The more guesses the greater the probability of being right
by Mean Ol' Pete on Jul 29, 2011 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions
From pick 1 in 1999, the vast mjority of our BEWAGs have been the most horrible plane crashes. That’s why I say it hasn’t worked. We need to try something to improve now.
by Aussie Brown on Jul 29, 2011 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I think if we wait for this all to shake out we’ll be able to upgrade many positions at a discount as compared to one or two at a premium and causing future problems signing our own free agents (EX: Joe Thomas)
