Cleveland Browns Make Roster Cuts to Get Down to 80 Players

The Cleveland Browns waived eight players on Sunday, according to the official team site. Teams must cut their rosters down to 80 players by Tuesday, but it's not unusual for teams to get a head start. Why keep ten extra guys in camp who aren't going to make the final roster at this point? The eight players who were cut are listed after the jump.

Star-divide

QB Troy Weatherhead
WR Johnathan Haggerty
WR Juan Nunez
DL Kyle Anderson
DL Jabari Fletcher
CB Darian Hagan
S Brett Johnson
K Jeff Wolfert

None of the cuts were surprising. Weatherhead never received an opportunity to play in the preseason games, and it got to the point where he wasn't even getting reps in training camp either. Haggerty is the biggest "name" on the list, but his camp was extremely quiet this year compared to last year. Nunez, Anderson, and Fletcher were undrafted free agents who never saw significant playing time. Hagan was one of those defensive backs who made a couple of plays, but he didn't have a chance with James Dockery being ahead of him. Johnson was brought in as safety depth, so his quick departure might mean the team believes their starting safeties will be ready by opening day. Wolfert looked pretty strong in camp and the preseason, so he might be a guy who catches on elsewhere in the future.

Hat tip to crazyL80 for his original FanShot on these cuts.

Wolfert’s leg is really good. I could see revisiting him down the road. I thought Hagan was worth keeping on the taxi squad.

Doesn’t a cut often mean that the guy winds up on the practice squad?

Right, no real surprises here.
