Browns Don't Practice on Wednesday, Thursday's Practice Moved
Training camp was scheduled to be closed to the public on Wednesday, and the conditions in the morning were rainy. It might have been nice to get some of the players better acclimated to Cleveland weather, but head coach Pat Shurmur decided to call things off: he gave players the day off.
That's not to say the day was a complete waste. The team reportedly spent the morning holding tryouts at punter, according to Tony Grossi of the Plain Dealer. Another important revelation was made by the team regarding the next training camp session that will be open to the general public. On Thursday, August 4th, practice has been moved to 4:10 pm. The session will last until 6:00 pm, meaning it will be 40 minutes shorter than originally scheduled.
The reason for the move? We've been hearing that veteran free agent signings could not start practicing until August 4th. More specifically, they could not start practicing until 4:00 pm on August 4th, because that is when the official league year begins. Changing the practice time will allow players like OG John Greco, OG Billy Yates, RB Brandon Jackson, TE Evan Moore, DL Jayme Mitchell DL Derreck Robinson, DL Brian Schaefering, LB Marcus Benard, S Usama Young, and K Phil Dawson to participate, making it the first full camp session of the year. Whoever the Browns sign at punter will be allowed to participate too. Due to the time change, I might be able to make it to Thursday's session in person, but I'll see.

if i have children, although i hate soccer, i may have my kid play the game and get really good at long kicks. eventually, he’ll get into football with his amazing skills and will make at least the base salary in football, maybe more, and will take care of his old man.
either that or punt a soccerball into my face for being too pushy.

I don’t feel like canceling and then abbreviating practices is the best idea givrn the cicumstances but I’m just some shmuck.

Yeah, we need all the practice time we can get.

One thing that’s changed with the new cba is that there can only be so many practices, so many in pads, with hitting, etc. so they may be thinking they should save a practice until the rest of the guys get in.
the day off will give the coaches time to review film of the players and be prepared to adjust who gets first team reps, maybe find out what specific things need to be worked on more, prepare for all the new players in camp starting tomorrow, give injuries that always are high in the first week of camp to rest, etc.
with the rain the way it was, i am ok with this day off. don’t want more injuries on wet grass, do this later when their bodies are more acclimated to playing at full speed, like next week or so. i’d bet many are in the weight room, film rooms, etc, anyway.
Every day may not be good, but there's something good in every day.
RE: Marcus Benard
MB does look like he’s bulked up since last year. Maybe he now becomes a rotational DE?

After a couple minutes of productive drills
“Pat Shurmur: “You’re doing great. Keep it up, guys”
Marcus Benard: yells obnoxiously, “That’s what she said!”
The whole team erupts in laughter. Schaefring gives Benard a bro hug as the team bonds.

OT – but heck it was a slow Browns’ camp day. Our friends at Mile High Club on SBN have their knickers in a huge twist. Supposedly KO is the clear starter and get this – BQ is outplaying Tim Tebow.

I’m not surprised either. Nothing to do with BQ – I’ve just never believed Tebow would be a legit starting NFL QB.

The guy was an amazing player and a great leader at the college level, but he’s in over his head in the NFL and he just doesn’t have the passing skills or accuracy to be a starter IMO.

We have a conditional draft pick in next year’s draft based on BQ’s performance. I’m hoping he is the starter.

I sincerely hope tha Pat is nmot making an effort to be the “anti Mangini”. Eric would never have passed up a chance to practice in the rain. Does anyone know if this a “lost practice” or if you have a max number of practices and it is just a move?

Henry makes a good point though. this new coaching staff has their own priorities. practicing in camp is all fine and dandy, but like someone else stated recently there’s no reason to put the players in harms way as they’re trying to get back into real football condition. wait a couple weeks after they get used to the motions again. more likely than not we would just be tempting more injuries to occur if we practiced in the rain at this point.
and similar to my comment recently about the field noise, it makes more sense to allow the players to focus all their attention to the new schemes first and then test them with other influences such as weather and crowd noise once they actually know what they’re doing.
if you were a parent would you make your 5 year old to ride a bike on a cold rainy day without any real practice or would you wait until there’s fair enough condition that they don’t have to worry about slipping through a puddle?

It’s not unheard of to cancel practice on days that were closed to the public. Mangini did is a couple of times too.

I’m happy they chose to skip today. We have too many injuries already to practice when conditions suck. Syndric Steptoe was not a great loss when he went down, but he blamed his injury on the wet field. I would hate for that to happen to another receiver. We started thin at wide out and it’s only gotten worse since camp started. I think caution is wise here.

Yep, not to mention the fact that this is one less practice they’ll have to slog through with Taylor missing in action (and several others who are missing due to those injuries but will hopefully be back by the next practice).
