I think we have suspected this news for the past couple of days, but Eric Steinbach's season is likely over. He was scheduled to have back surgery on Tuesday, and although it doesn't look optimistic for him, there isn't an immediate rush to place him on the injured reserve. The final rosters do not need to be named until after the final preseason game. According to Scott Petrak of the Chronicle-Telegram, the Browns are consulting with doctors one more time before a final decision is made on his 2011-2012 season.
The Browns signed offensive lineman Oniel Cousins off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens on Monday. A former third-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, Cousins has played in 25 games with four career starts with Baltimore. According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer, Cousins quickly fell on the depth chart this preseason:
Cousins, 27, entered his fourth season in Baltimore as the starting right tackle. He was moved to right guard after one bad preseason outing and then demoted after another. When the Ravens signed former Minnesota starter Bryant McKinnie, Cousins was deemed expendable and waived.
Per head coach Pat Shurmur, the signing of Cousins was planned when they heard he was waived, and it is not related to Steinbach's situation. According to CBS Sports, Cousins spent time at right tackle in his first practice with the Browns Tuesday.
