Cleveland Browns 53-Man Roster Projection (Version 3)

It has been two weeks since my last training camp roster projection. What's changed since then? There have been some players who have suffered injuries, the rosters were already trimmed to 80 players, and there have been two additional preseason games to help evaluate players. I will have one more roster projection before the final 53-man rosters are released. In anticipate my roster projection being posted on Friday.

Injured reserve projections: OG Eric Steinbach, P Reggie Hodges

The above list contains 53 players that I kept, and 26 players that I cut. My practice squad only contains six players, meaning two players would come from other team's cuts. Listed below is what has changed since the last time. Any position not listed did not have any changes.

General Roster Projection Notes

  • Quarterback: Not only has Jarrett Brown looked lost, but it seems as though the team will need to be extra deep at certain positions while players heal. Brown will see zero action unless our top two quarterbacks get injured in one game. Might as well stash him on the practice squad instead.

  • Running Back: With Brandon Jackson scheduled to be out until about Week 4, another running back needed to be added temporarily. I am too concerned about Armond Smith's fumbling issues and miscues in camp to trust him with playing time right now. I know Quinn Porter hasn't had time to show much either, but he hasn't made the big blunder yet. Smith can still be on the practice squad.

  • Wide Receiver: I had to move Carlton Mitchell to the cut list because I really feel the team will keep four tight ends. Mitchell would've stayed if it weren't for Jackson's injury at running back. If they can put Mitchell on the practice squad and Jackson returns after a couple of weeks, Mitchell can take Porter's spot on the final roster.

  • Offensive Line: With Eric Steinbach likely out for the season, I placed him on the IR. It was a toss-up on who would take his spot between Pat Murray and newcomer Oniel Cousins. I went with Murray because he's been here longer; Cousins can prove his worth on Thursday.

  • Linebacker: I added Auston English to the mix this time as the seventh linebacker. This is another injury situation -- with Chris Gocong and Titus Brown being banged up, that extra guy might be needed, especially on special teams.

There weren't too many changes, but there were enough. Feel free to share your own updated roster projections here, or some changes you would make to mine.

Really hope Carlton squeezes his way on there somehow

…indeed. I would say put Alex Smith on the practice squad to keep Mitchell in the line up. But I really don’t see Evan Moore staying healthy all year.

Would love to see Mitchell and Moore on the field at the same time.

Hank Poteat owes me 60 bucks.

I’m pretty sure Alex Smith isn’t eligible for the PS. I could be wrong.

Definitely, definitely not eligible. He’s been in the NFL since 2006 I think. He probably played enough last year alone to be ineligible.

I like it.

I think Carlton makes the team over Alex Smith, and I think Cousins makes the team over Vallos/Murray.

This is what will happen.

Also, Clutts needs a strike-through doesn’t he? Thought we already cut him.

Pittsburgh is just jealous. We got Cudi and they have Wiz.

Nope. In fact, he’s a dark horse to make the final roster in my opinion.

There should just never be an NFL skill position player named Clutts. You are just tempting fate. Guarantee he will lead FBs in drops.

Go figure! Mooncamping has the roster down to 39 players!

by mooncamping on Aug 31, 2011 4:01 AM EDT reply actions

Looks like we’re going for the two point conversion after every touchdown. We will also refuse to punt, attempting to convert every fourth down. Joe Thomas will be handling kick-offs, though to make it fair the NFL has decided he must do so while hopping on one leg.

Come on Marecic, get in front of the damn ball! Don't give me this "olé" bullsht!

by Clevsports on Aug 31, 2011 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Joe Thomas lives by Joe Thomas’ rules only. Most of them just happen to coincide with the NFL’s rules. If Joe Thomas does so while hopping on one foot, it is because he is a benevolent God that does not like to discourage his disciples.

Very funny. Lets agree that two yards a pop is conceivable. Joe Thomas costs too much to use him on kick off, even I know that.

by mooncamping on Sep 1, 2011 6:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Chris Matthews on the PS, too much potential in a massive frame. Darian Hagan to PS if he clears waivers. Eric Hagg could go on IR or PUP. Brandon Jackson and Titus Brown on PUP. Ko Quaye and Paxson to active roster.

1. I think we will need to sign a 3rd string QB to the roster and move Jarret to practice squad. Just think we will need a viable 3rd QB in the meeting room all year.
2. The 4 TEs is a luxury that we just shouldn’t have – but I think you are spot on – we have to keep Alex Smith because he is the best blocker in the group.
3. I know I am in the minority – but I am still hoping for significant upgrades on the roster. Hoping for an OL that is better than some of those bums. Hoping for 2 DL so we can cut Schaeffering who is a 3-4 DE and Ivey. Hoping for a safety so we can cut Ventrone since special teams will be somewhat diminished. Think Richmond will be cut. Think we need a RB since Montario is not 100% and Jackson is out for a long time.

Forgot to mention – also hope we add an LB.

Hasn’t Schaeffering looked pretty good at DT?
