Browns Likely to be Without Tony Pashos for "a Couple of Weeks"

A couple of days ago, Cleveland Browns offensive line coach George Warhop indicated that right tackle Tony Pashos could be out for several weeks. Head coach Pat Shurmur would not deny Warhop's comment. "We’ll have to see," said Shurmur. "He’s still in the boot and he’s probably going to be out this week.  Then I think we’ll just take it week to week, but there is a chance."

The Browns still plan to use a rotation at right tackle this week, but it sounds like Artis Hicks will start the game instead of Oniel Cousins. "We’ll probably start Artis in there, but you’ll see Oniel in there as well," stated Shurmur.

When asked if Pashos had suffered any form of a setback, Shurmur said that he had not and that it just takes time for that type of injury to settle down. Hicks and Cousins better be ready, because they'll likely be lined up against Robert Mathis the entire game. Constant disruption from that side of the line will kill what the Browns are trying to achieving in the West Coast Offense. Hopefully the Browns are able to neutralize Mathis just enough to take advantage of the rest of the Colts' flaws on defense.

Pretty ironic how 40% of our OL is made up of Pro Bowlers yet it is still one of the biggest weaknesses of the team.

And today will be better than yesterday.

Would The Joe Thomas please grant his faithful a boon and create a RT in his own image? Perhaps a RG that doesn’t jump off sides from the RT’s rib while he’s at it?

A Rams OL (That would be LA Rams) once played with a broken leg.

Do you think with the current dominance of the passing game, and the corresponding emphasis on the Tackles on the OL, the days of the legendary all pro guard (John Hannah springs to mind) are gone? Pretty much all of todays Star OL are LTs, with a few Centers in there I guess.

Any DE against any of our guards or tackles not named Joe Thomas doesn’t sound good to me. Regardless, my comment was mostly tongue in cheek and of course having JT at LT is gold.

Then again it does seem like Colt seems to be at his best scrambling / rolling out to his right when pressured… also seems like he’s good at “sensing” the pressure from behind.

by mooncamping on Sep 17, 2011 5:45 AM EDT reply actions

Anybody know anything about Greco? He’s 10lbs lighter than Hicks and the same height. Is he strictly a guard? He’s been with the team for all of camp and these guys regularly learn multiple positions so why hasn’t he seen any reps? If Hicks and Cousins are not the answer cab Greco be worse?

What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?

by DaveDawg09 on Sep 17, 2011 8:12 AM EDT reply actions

Yea I have also been wondering about Greco. I wonder if they are not starting him because if he starts a game that is how the Rams get a pick of ours.

by nurse13 on Sep 17, 2011 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Shur says he’s the backup left guard, but I don’t know why that role would take priority over the questionable RT situation unless they think he makes a worse RT than Hicks and Cousins.

by crazyL80 on Sep 17, 2011 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Greco could probably move to RT in a pinch. But I don’t know how bad the right side would have to be to try it out. I think it can get worse on the right side, believe it or not.

by johnf34 on Sep 17, 2011 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I could also see us going a)CB or b)WR with our 1st pick. a)Brown isn’t getting any younger, and b)if after this season it’s decided that Colt is the one, they may want to get him a decent WR to throw to.

I really don’t really think... - Tom Heckert

by North Coast Flea on Sep 17, 2011 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt we see a CB in our first 3 picks next year. I would think the hope there is that Buster Skrine and Dockery can get to the 2/3 guys next year. If we find ourselves in the top 10 again this year, Id hope we go after a LB. WR and RT next priorities, then S not too far after. And if McCoy turns out to try and imitate BQ then we may have to throw the draft out the window to go after Luck.

Didn’t we draft Pinkston to be a RT? Didn’t Greco rate pretty highly for a backup guard last year? Wonder why we haven’t tried Pinkston at RT and Greco at LG. I still with Yates would exit retirement after seeing out situation.

I am fairly certain Heckert has always stated Pinkston is starting out as a G. I never fully understood this because it seems like an easier transition to RT from LT in college. Maybe he was too slow or something? I dont know, but I’d certainly be trying to groom him there.

Heckert might have thought otherwise, but I thought Pinkston was a guard prospect coming out.

It also could have been the case that he had to learn LG right away and not RT as quickly/much in camp. Yates retired, Steinbach got hurt, and he had to go there. They think Pashos will be back for the opener, then he takes a turn for the worse.

So at that point you can either shuffle a rookie to his second position when he’s still making mental mistakes at his first one AND shuffle someone else over to his spot, or you can try to plug the new hole.

I am now sick and tired of wondering about Pashos’s feet every week. How is this guy not on IR already? His is obviously a chronic problem. Get the guy his treatment, open up another roster spot and move on.

There isn’t anybody in this great country of ours that can play RT for us? The schedule only gets tougher the deeper we go into the season.

On the other hand, maybe we’re trying to nurse him through to December when it’s so damn cold he won’t be able to feel his feet anyway.

Right Tackle crisis

has been going on since Tucker’s end. Of course when Tucker was in his prime, we had the LT crisis.

It is really simple: You build a OL: LT-C-RT and THEN fill in the guards. If those 3 positions aren’t sound, it will effect the entire offense.

by Johnnypronto on Sep 17, 2011 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

Well, baring Pinkston matures properly, the only young piece we’re missing for an amazing line is RT.

Pittsburgh is just jealous. We got Cudi and they have Wiz.

by SpecialBrownie on Sep 17, 2011 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, but it seems to be slowng the progress of the entire offense. We’ll see how they do this week, but it is a definite concern that Pashos is hurt often.

by SBP on Sep 17, 2011 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

People are making a bigger deal out of it than it should be. We see Colt running around back there and immediately blame RT, when it isn’t always coming from that position and almost all of the time Colt is hanging on to the ball too long/not finding anyone open.

We threw it 40 times and the RT pass pro was a disaster maybe 5 of those times. Does it hurt us? Yes. But it’s not going to undermine everything we try to do.

While it has been very distressing seeing our o-line problems I agree. I think the bigger problem with our offense (to this point) has been the fact that our offense is still coming together in terms of Colt’s timing with the receivers in the routes specific to the new offense, MoMass coming back just recently from injury, etc. etc. Of course it would be great if we can get to the point where Colt has lots of time in the pocket every play, but I believe once the passing offense / timing, etc. “gels” and Colt starts getting more comfortable in the pocket (the former + experience will help with the latter) he should be able to start getting the ball out quicker we should start to see the offense click. That’s my hope anyway.

Go, I say go away boy, you bother me.

by burntorangeandbrown on Sep 18, 2011 7:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Mine too. Only thing that worries me is the ability of the WRs. Can’t get the ball out in rhythm if no one is open. Colt will get quicker with getting the ball out.

I’m not saying they will be dominant, but I think we can afford to wait and see a little more at those positions. And/or use those 4th/5th round picks at G. Lauvao needs to be more consistent with his pad level and not being too aggressive and overextending, but I think he can be solid for us. Not exactly a premium position, either.

RE: Right tackle

I was afraid of this. Pashos has missed many more games in the last three seasons than he’s played in. So ….. I’m pretty sure Mr. Holmgren has already notified Mr. Heckert: “Tom, job one next year is a young stud RT, even if it takes one of our first round picks to get it done. Just get ’er done!”
