Tom Heckert Speaking on the Radio Today

Good morning Browns fans. After holding a press conference with team president Mike Holmgren last Thursday, general manager Tom Heckert will be busy doing two interviews on the radio this morning.

At 11:00 PM EST, he will be on The Really Big Show with Rizzo and Goldhammer. That will air on ESPN 850 WKNR. Alternatively, you can listen online at ESPN Cleveland. Send some tweets or emails to them to see if they'll ask any of your questions. Then, at 4:00 PM EST, Heckert will be on Bull & Fox on 92.3 The Fan. You can also listen to that online.

There probably won't be a whole lot of new information revealed; if there were any pressing issues, they were asked last week. And, for any questions that Heckert was evasive on, there's really no reason for that to change now. Still, it's Browns-related and you never know if he'll slip up, so try tuning in to at least one of the shows!

I’m listening to him on WKNR right now. I like what I’m hearing from him a lot more than what I heard during the press conference.

Heckert just said "I think Colt McCoy can play in this league and be successful in this league. I think with a full offseason and some better weapons around him we could win some of those game we lost this year. So much for drafting RG3.

by PaduaDSP on Jan 12, 2012 11:20 AM EST reply actions

I think the implication could be that he’s unwilling to trade up to get him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we did pick RG3 should he be available at #4.

Maybe on a few, but never for Taylor. If we went DT, it would have been without a trade for Fairley. Taylor seemed like a surprise pick for everyone.

I think the most surprising part was that we traded back up to get Taylor not the initial trade down. I figured once we traded down the FO had a good idea about 1-2 player they would be satisfied selecting. I was much more surprised we traded back up than I was that we traded down.

The bosses are saying that the QB position is already open for competition. They handed Colt the job last year and said “Colt is our guy.”

What they are saying right now is that Colt isn’t so clearly the best guy that the job is his. They are saying “the best QB will play” and what they are implying is that that guy might not be Colt.

Right. But all that talk about “competition” means that they will NOT be giving him another year (which you said. You said "they are giving him another year).

They’ve effectively already taken the starting job away from him and thrown it up for grabs. Now, Colt may lock the job down again next year, but they are not giving him another year with the job as his to lose.

Please clarify this. This is what you wrote that has me confused. Because that looks to me like you assumed they would give Colt another year as the starter.

I believe Colt is a helluva guy, a tough sonofabitch, and not a terrible football player. He hasn’t shown me anything that leads me to believe he is the next Drew Brees. He could still become great but I think it is possible as opposed to probable.

Agreed. It would also make no sense whatsoever to say that he wouldn’t consider taking a QB with #4, even if he were dead set against it in reality. The inherent trade value of the pick is only increased if the other teams looking for a QBotF believe we’re also interested in that pick for that same reason.

To have the players around you to be able to instantly produce ( Cam Newton has Steve Smith to throw to – who do we have as a star WR- → No one) as a rookie is something we all pretty much were hoping for. The reality is, that we are very very offensive deficient and still really not there with the defense either. This 3rd H&H draft along with really “KEY” free agent signings will show where we are going as a team. A “QUALITY” veteran on the rightside OL would be a huge start, along with a WR, DE, LB, & S. Then use the draft to add the explosive difference makers.
We will never know if he’s the real McCoy unless we have the tools in place for any QB to suceed…

I don’t understand this fascination with RGIII, he’s not that big of an upgrade over McCoy, if any. RGIII would be a total waste of a #4 pick, for that matter he would be a waste at #22 also. This team has more needs that are much more pressing than starting over again at the QB position, positions like a stud WR, O-lineman, RB, DE, LB, just to name a couple. If RGIII were available in the 3rd or 4th round then absolutely take him but not before.

Nothing wrong with that thinking. Opinion is an opinion, even if others do not agree. My only problem is when someone even mentions keeping McCoy instead of drafting RG3 or defends McCoy, the whole DBN comes down on them with a Vengence. Basically, the McCoy defender gets beaten down and heckled unless they change their mind or partially agree with the Board. Minority or not, no one should have to be called stupid, ignorant, or dumb for their opinion. The high and mighty routine is getting really old with all the “experts” and long timers trying to tell everyone how to think and being A-holes when you don’t agree with them. This isn’t aimed at you TheDriveStillHurts. I don’t want you to think that because I have put this under your comment that I am attacking you. I could not agree more. If we all knew how to run a football team, we would be running the Browns. Opinion is just that and we all have opinions. Even when references are made ans stats are flown around like we are experts with Google we are still basing our opinions off of those facts. Point being, i may not be the oldest person in this room, but I have watched Browns games back to the Brian Sipe era and I still have my opinions on what the Browns should do, but I still lay my faith in the people who are hired to make my favorite football team successful.

We can debate RGIII all day and I am with the minority here. He wasn’t even on the radar until he exploded this year against a suspect and mediocre Big 12 conference. I do not want RGIII. I want a playmaker that can stretch the field or I want a playmaking running back to take the pressure off of Colt McCoy. Colt was a great college quarterback too and he should be alloted the chance to succeed. Now, if Blackmon is gone I would not be against Richardson at 4 and cross our fingers maybe Jeffrey is there at 22. If Colt is given weapons and still does not progress, Barkley and possibly a much improved Landry will be there next year.

Why do you feel this team owes anything to Colt? The job of the FO is to do anything and everything to win football games, regardless of the impact on any one particular player. For evidence, look no further than the Indianapolis Colts, who are allegedly considering shipping Peyton Manning out and replacing him with Andrew Luck. There isn’t a single player in the NFL that is owed anything, especially one who hasn’t done much worth holding onto.

Nobody’s ever called anyone else here “stupid, ignorant, or dumb” for wanting McCoy to start. Stop being a drama queen about it. Jeesh. You probably got a lot of people who were pretty much sick of his schtick near the end of the year and were frustrated, but I don’t think anyone was personally insulted the way you describe for wanting to stay the course. It’s just that a lot of people here don’t agree, don’t confuse an unpopular opinion with getting beat up.

by HenryDawg on Jan 12, 2012 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

HenryDawg…There have been a ton of insults thrown at McCoy supporters on this forum (especially at the end of the year). If you take it as whining, then fine, take it as such. I am only stating that here on DBN, if you disagree with the majority, you get your rear end handed to you. Instead of insulting intelligence like some DBNers do, come in with facts and reasoning. Don’t just throw out the typical BS that gets repeated over and over again on here. People say things on here like they are facts when in reality it is nothing but their opinion. Show me that Colt McCoy is too short for the NFL. Show me that his arm strength is weak and can’t make the throws. Prove to me he is not making the proper reads. Prove it with facts, stats, and video. I like when Rufio does his breakdowns with videos because I can see for myself what is working and what is not. It is broken down for all of us to see. Otherwise we are only spinning our wheels with opinion. You have your opinion, I have mine. I would like to be able to air my opinion without some douche telling me my opinion sucks and I have no clue.

by dirtyjoe on Jan 12, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

Colt McCoy proves everything you said on his own, I don’t need to prove it, watch a game, read the stat line. Why don’t you show me where is the potential down the road to get better? And besides that, my only point is that just because some of us are frustrated that we never take chances on blue chip QBs, you take that as us belittling and insulting you. Get over it, we don’t care, we want to win and you win by having a great QB.

Nonetheless, I’ll give you a perfect example of why Colt seems like he won’t be able to overcome his limitations. Steelers game, Colt breaks the pocket (probably feeling more pressure than is actually there), his deep receiver, Evan Moore, does what he’s supposed to do when the QB is on the run and turns up field. Colt heaves, as in a 15-20 yard heave like he’s throwing a bowling ball over a moat, towards Moore but is about 5 yards too short and it gets picked by Palamalu. I could find plenty of other poor reads, throws, exaggeration of pressure and inaccuracy. The guy needs to literally see with his eyes that a guy is wide open before he throws it. That’s not going to happen very often in the NFL, you need to be able to read the receiver and throw before he’s open. If not, the defender has closed the gap and is breaking up the pass or tackling the receiver for little gain. He throws 15 yard passes like Doug Flutie throwing a hail mary. Go watch some games and then come back and talk to me. I’m more than willing to sit around another year waiting for him to get better, but what I can’t stand is someone who knows crap about RG3, hasn’t seen him play or even watched a YouTube video but proclaims they have a bad feeling about him. Sorry if I have almost no football respect for someone that lazy and ignorant.

To sum up, I’m not Rufio, most of us aren’t, but certainly have learned tons from him which have influenced my opinions. I’ve backed up every point I’ve made at some point, but I’m not going to do it in every damn comment I make, I feel repetitive enough as it is. There is plenty of info out there about why RG3 could be a stud, how about some of you doubters tell us why you don’t think he’ll be good (other than you’ve mentally equated him to Jamarcus Russel and Akili Smith but your just saying its a “feeling”).

I can’t stand listening to is Colt supporters playing the role of persecuted minority, and all the rest of big, bad DBN is out to get them. I want Colt to be the guy – you think I wouldn’t rather draft other players with our 9 draft picks? Hell yes I do, tell me why I should, other than you think he’s a nice guy and he can take a hit.

Then don’t listen. If an opinion is stated that you disagree with, you don’t have to comment on it. That is a choice everyone here makes. I have stated over and over that everyone here is entitled to their opinion on DBN. The problem is sometimes when someone mentions a different opinion from the Majority, they get rained upon with sarcasm and sometimes derogatory statements. I don’t want to spend the time looking up old posts where it got nasty to prove my point. I respect every opinion on here, no matter how much I disagree. It is not just McCoy, RG3, or the O-line, it is everything. I like DBN and enjoy most of the posts. There is a lot of knowledge within these boards, but quite a bit of Holier than Thou here too.

Most people here state that RG3 could be the savior of the team. What attributes in RG3 are better than McCoy’s current Attributes? A stronger arm, Taller, Sees the field better? My opinion is RG3 is an upgrade, but not a head and shoulders upgrade over McCoy like most here state. If we are going to get a new QB, quit screwing with the 2nd tier and go after the closest to the sure thing. Andrew Luck is the QB that needs to be had, not Griffen. Next years draft will have several QBs that will look better after polishing their final college year with Barkley and Jones. If we can’t get Luck, go after these 2 next year. Trade the #4 pick if Griffen is there and we can make a play for QB next year (barring we don’t get Luck).

You have absolutely no way of knowing this. Anything can happen in 15 months, Barkley and Jones could have been injured or regressed by April 2013. However, I know what I have seen and what the experts have said about RG3, and I would like to see it in orange and brown.

Yes, and RG3 breaks his leg coming off the aircraft when he lands in Cleveland. No one knows what can happen with injuries or regression. I would say their is a 50/50 chance that at least one of them will be there in the 2013 draft.

I don’t think it’s wise to rely on the 2013 draft at this point. Yes, anything could happen before the 2012 draft but there’s more time and more opportunities for things to get screwed up for the 2013 draft. Heck, a bunch of teams could suddenly suck and go 3-13 and push our draft pick in 2013 down and those QBs are gone before we can get them.

Anything can happen. I think H&H did not improve the offense in order to have a shot at Luck this year. The Colts got Lucky? that Manning went out when he did. Otherwise if Manning was playing, the Rams or Vikings would have had the top pick. 2 first rounders plus a 2nd would have been a no brainer for either of these teams to move Luck. Leave it to the Colts to throw the monkey wrench in the plan.

The point he is making though is that you shouldn’t count your chickens and rely on a draft 15 months away and a whole NCAAF season away.

Sometimes tone is a big issue in a sentence. It does amaze me how an email or comment can set someone off just because of how a tone can be presented. Using terms like “you” or using similar “accusatory” statements can be misinterpreted. It happens quite a bit on here. I get wound up very quickly, especially if I feel brushed off or dismissed (I am sure everyone does at one time or another). Here is an example:

Colt McCoy is the bar napkin sitting under the shot of Jaeger that is RG3. They’re not anywhere near comparable so just stop it, go watch some video and let it go.

Nothing against HenryDawg, I am only using this as an example. Something like this seems derogatory to McCoy even though it is roundabout way of saying that RG3 is physically better than McCoy. I personally take offense to comments similar to this because it discounts anything McCoy did this year as inferior. I saw a lot of good and bad with McCoy this year and I believe he should at least be respected for what he had to endure, failures and all (my opinion). Then it is implied that I need to watch video because obviously my lack of knowledge is keeping me from seeing the light that is RG3. That is only one comment on here and there are several more throughout all threads on DBN. Take a look at my tagline, it fits very, very, well.

Wow you’re taking a bad analogy about someone else personally? You also completely ignored anything I said about why I didn’t think Colt had “It” and you haven’t given any reasons that you think we shouldn’t draft RG3. I just said I’m tired of the RG3 bashers not providing a reason we shouldn’t draft him (other than he’s going to break his leg getting off the plane). I’ve back up my feelings about Colt with facts. I like the kid and wanted him to be the guy, I don’t think he is at this point. Neither do a lot of people, and some of us are high on RG3. You don’t have to like him, but it would be nice to hear some realistic reasons other than “I just don’t think we should draft him” or “we shouldn’t take a QB high unless its Andrew Luck.” Luck can very easily be a bust too you know. There’s going to be a ton of pressure on him to turn around Indy who’s not going to have many weapons left.

by HenryDawg on Jan 13, 2012 5:59 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Not a hit on you HenryDawg…it is not personal. I only used your comment as an example. Luck is unanimously the closest to the sure thing. Is RG3 good? Yes. Is RG3 better than Colt? I don’t know if he is or isn’t. There is more to a QB than footwork and a strong arm. Same size as Colt…check. Came from a college spread like Colt….check. Played in a very weak Big 12 conference like Colt….check. Arm Strength is better than Colt…yes. Is he smarter than Colt and can he adjust to defenses in the NFL…I don’t know. Is RG3 the sure thing….I don’t know that either. Why go for something that is a question mark rather than a sure thing? That is what I am trying to push out here. Nobody is bashing RG3. I trust H&H will do what needs to be done. Overall, I think it is a moot point though. RG3 will be off the board before the 4th pick.

He’s bigger than Colt, he is easily as smart or smarter than Colt, makes excellent on field decisions, high athletic and football IQ, great leader, exciting player who can attract other play makers.

I’m fine with you wanting Luck more, but I’m going under the assumption we can’t get him. If can then I’m totally fine with that. Personally I have this weird feeling that RG3 would be better for us in the long run but I wouldn’t be unhappy with either.

My biggest concern is that I truly don’t think we’ll be drafting this low for quite some time but I do think we could get stuck being one of those teams that draft 10-12 every year but never seem to go anywhere. I also think Luck/Griffin is much better than Barkley/Jones and we get them a whole extra year to develop.

I never said Colt was the guy even though I hope he is. I think the Browns would make a mistake going after RG3. If we are going to upgrade our QB, quit piddling around and go after the big prize in Luck. RG3 has a little more mystery surrounding him concerning play in the NFL and that worries me. He is an electrifying player, but so are most “top” tier QBs coming out of college. RG3 is not Cam Newton, but it seems like a lot of people believe he could be. People here were not clamoring for Cam Newton a year ago, but the knee jerk reaction after Newton’s big year seems to have people in a tizzy about RG3.

In reality Rufio, I don’t see another standout option out there this year besides Andrew Luck. Trade RG3 if he falls to us. Go after Luck, but if we don’t get him, grab other needs. McCoy will suffice if he is able to grab the starting spot. I would much rather wait until next year and have another look see at Barkley or Jones. Grab another QB in the 2nd (Tannehill?). Off subject, I really envy the Cardinals. I think the Cardinals found a stud in Skelton. It will be fun to watch him possibly grow into an elite QB. The next part of the conversation is where do we go from here. When Neither Colt nor the best QBs (we can afford, not Luck) in the draft aren’t proven enough who do you put at QB when the season starts? I think it would be a good move to draft Griffin if he is there at 4 and open up the competition. I do not think it would be smart / am not at all interested to see Wallace compete to start. Personally I hope Colt starts next year because I think he can be average with some more pieces around him, and that would be an improvement from this year. Even if we draft Griffin, Colt would probably be the better option to start in the beginning.

You can’t draft a guy at #4 that you don’t think is going to be an extremely good QB. I think Griffin will, and I would take him but sit him behind Colt for at least a little while. If you don’t think Griffin is anything special, you draft someone else and wait for your guy.

RG3 is more of a mystery, but I want to make sure if we draft a high QB, it is as close to a sure thing as possible. I would much rather use the #4 pick for other needs.

It’s also certainly possible that we didn’t have any positive influence on our offense this year without a coordinator or an off season. The off season thing, I can argue. By week 5 everyone should have a clue. The coordinator thing however, if the guy calling the plays has no clue because he has another job to do, I can put some trust in the fact that he was over his head and it wasn’t our Qb’s fault.

The problem with that argument is that our QB wasn’t executing the plays called. You can argue that the calls weren’t good, but Pat Shurmur didn’t make Colt hold the ball too long or throw interceptions when he was trying to throw out of bounds.

Believe me I’ve read all the arguments and opinions concerning RGIII and McCoy. From what I’ve seen of RGIII, the only thing he has over McCoy, in my opinion, is he is a bit more mobile. When it comes to arm strength, accuracy, and decision making I just don’t see a lot of difference. Its just that I am so tired of the thought process that if we change the qb then the offense will be better. I don’t know if McCoy is the answer or not, but before we decide to kick him to the curb lets give him some protection, a true #1 receiver, a solid running game and an offensive coordinator who knows what the heck he’s doing.

Accuracy and decision making are hard to measure from what I have seen, but on arm strength, this is not debatable. Griffin has a gun. McCoy doesn’t. There is a clear difference there.

Colt was really accurate in college too, but RG3’s connections on deep balls really stands out to me. He hits those fades down the sideline really really well.

And yeah, it’s pretty clear to me that the ball “jumps” out of Griffin’s hands while it does not out of McCoy’s. But I don’t have a radar gun on them.

I’m curious about what people think re: the physical attributes of good QBs. I mean, it seems to me that physical qualities (ability to throw the ball further than anyone else, running ability, size and the like) have to be mixed with things like leadership, intelligence and decision-making. All the top QB prospects are going to be accurate and have roughly the right physical characteristics necessary to play the position (some better than others of course). And yet I can think of numerous examples of QBs who succeeded but didn’t have the perfect physiques or lacked arm strength and so forth. I think we can all remember at least one.

I’m not yet convinced that we should draft RG3, although commenters here have made a good case for it. My perspective now is that we should probably take him if he’s available at 4 and pursue some other draft strategy if not.

One thing that impresses me about RG3, though, is that he seems to have some of the non-physical gifts. He’s clearly a smart guy – just watch any interview with him on YouTube and you’ll see – and he comes across as a strong leader who plays for his team and isn’t selfish.

by batard on Jan 13, 2012 1:20 AM EST up reply actions

I think ideally you’d have a 6’8" guy who is nimble, fast, and not terribly thin: 250-270. That guy would have a huge arm and be able to throw the ball 100 yards with the flick of a wrist.

I don’t think that guy exists.

I do think that part of the reason QBs are in such high demand is because there are so few guys with the “intangible” things you need—world-class quick decision making, leadership, “feel for the game”, etc.—who also have good enough physical skills.

At this point, I am 100% sold on Colt’s toughness and leadership. Guys like Fujita have compared him to Brees without being prompted. I believe he has a strong enough arm. It’s not great, but he’s connected on a good amount of downfield passes on the NFL. His height is not a huge problem for me; he’s bigger than people think.

Right now my biggest critique is that he isn’t playing with the intelligence and savvy that a guy without Cam Newton’s physical skills would need. He seems surprised by some coverages. He isn’t doing a good job pre-snap. He seems to struggle with his progressions at times, and others he gets flustered and delivers a bad throw. His movement in the pocket isn’t efficient. He’ll need to nail all of those things to be successful much like Brees does.

Its not even necessarily if he’ll get the time, but will he ever be able to do it? Certainly given all the time in the world and QB will improve, but how much? There’s no guarantee that Colt could become as good of a QB as Brees, Manning, etc.

A couple things here: what the fans think is irrelevant, and like rufio says, it’s not a matter of will he improve, but rather how much. There is no guarantee that he would ever become a good QB. In fact the odds are against him, and pretty heavily.

you are correct that the physical skills aren’t everything. See: Jeff George.

You can never be sure about these things in a QB coming out of college, but I feel good about these in terms of RG3. He graduated in 3 years with a degree in Poly-Sci (not exactly basket weaving). That might not show football intelligence, but it does show discipline and he at least has some brains and I do think he has football smarts.

On leadership, he comes from a military family with both parents serving. His record as a starter between 2009-2011 is 19-10 and Baylor isn’t exactly a Big 12 powerhouse. He was also 2-1 this year in close games vs. top 25 teams. I think he may be a good leader.

Your last bit is the vibe I get with him too and that, plus his academic/leadership background make me think he could be good.

give him some protection

Take a look at the teams in the playoffs and compare their offensive lines to ours. Ours is, at least, in the middle of that pack and probably better than the majority. A lot of Colt supporters seem to be under the impression that if you don’t have 5 first round pro-bowlers on your line, a QB is not getting a fair shot. QBs get sacked in this league. It happens.

Our line was really bad without Pashos and while the guards were young, I think it got much better as the year went on.

Again, I’d like you and the other “give him some protection” people to consider the things that Colt can do pre-snap to help his line out. His cadence is predictable, and he doesn’t pull out to point out the Mike backer or make sure his line sees things. Mack is the guy who mostly lines things up for us, and Colt would really do well to help out in this area.

You can’t argue that our pass protection is bad. Every measure of pass protection puts ours in the “fairly average” range. We don’t have a top O-line, but that isn’t what anyone was saying. We were just saying that we have better pass protection than a lot of playoff teams. That is a factual statement, not an opinion.

No one is asking for 5 probowlers on the line (it is a nice to think about it though). We need dependable guards because Lauvao and Pinkston are not cutting it. Tackle is an issue because Pashos cannot stay healthy. Give any QB an extra second or two in the pocket and they could do wonders.

Lauvao and Pinkston did much better later in the year. And the problem with your last statement is that no QB gets that long, especially if teams aren’t afraid to blitz them. I understand what you are saying, but if you look at the amount of time even the best lines give their QB it would not average 2 seconds longer than we gave Colt and Seneca.

There’s a reason people talk about “the speed of the game” as something that young players need to adjust to in the NFL.

Problem is, Colt has those extra couple second compared to a lot of other lines in the NFL and all he does with them most of the time is hold onto the ball. Don’t get me wrong, I like Colt and hope he can develop into “the guy”, and I wouldn’t be pissed if we drafted Blackmon instead of RG3. My main complaint is that he holds the ball too long and doesn’t “throw his receivers open”.

wait…so we HAVE to have patience with a mid-round QB when they have an extremely low rate of panning out (around 5%) while Pinkston had a year and isn’t cutting it?

He was a 4th round rookie RT playing LG, a position he never played before. Your Colt defending is getting ridiculous at this point.

If Colt gets 3+ years when the statistics say he won’t turn out, why shouldn’t Lauvao or Pinkston get more than a year or so when O-Lineman in the later rounds are more likely to pan out?

Also, Pinkston and Lauvao did a lot better near the end of the year and I am not the only one who has noticed this.

Big difference in skill sets between guards and a QB. QB is the hardest position to play on the field….correct? Guard is not an easy position, but it should be heck of a lot easier when you are wedged between two probowlers. 3 years is max for McCoy. Pinkston is a rookie and I will say he did a lot better the last 3 games of the season. Lauvao is injury prone and gets a ton of penalties. Once in a while is okay, but I believe he lead the team in Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties this year. Maybe I was a little hasty stating they need to go and I will backtrack that some. Maybe it is me, but I am tired of injuries and penalties killing us on the O-line.

Lauvao is injury prone because he had one injury last year? I don’t remember reading anything about major injuries in college.

Honestly, I have been on Lauvao’s case a lot on here, but he did improve in terms of penalties over the last 8 games to the point where it was at at least a normal pace. He also didn’t have the problems last year so hopefully it was just a 1/2 season blurp.

He may have led the team in unsportsmalike conduct penalties but I don’t think he had more than 2.

by bross09 on Jan 14, 2012 4:23 AM EST up reply actions

I swear Lauvao had more than 2 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties through the season. I will have to try and look that up. Injuries happen in the game, but it seems Lauvao is never 100%. How many times have you seen Alex Mack, Jason Pinkston, or Joe Thomas on the injury roster leading up to a game. The two players consistently on that roster is Lauvao and Pashos. Last year we had some nice depth on the line to cover down on the injuries. This year though, we were seriously exposed. We need another consistent lineman on the Right Side.

Yes im a troll. Yes I hate everyone. Yes I like Colt McCoy. Yes Im 4 years old. Yes I get butt hurt. Deal with it.

Losing Yates and Porkchop sucked. It will be key to get a quality RT in there. Having the same starters all the time on the line usually equals good quality because they really have to function in unison to make sure everyone is blocked. I saw Pashos make a pretty bad mistake and tried to block Luvao’s guy and let the edge rusher just run by him. The Guards will be better and Steiny’s coming back probably.

by HenryDawg on Jan 14, 2012 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

Over the course of a season guys are rarely going to feel perfectly healthy. When the Pats went 18-1 I think Brady was listed on the injury report every week. As long as the guy plays, and plays well, it doesn’t matter what the injury report says.

by Legoman0721 on Jan 14, 2012 11:18 AM EST via Android app up reply actions

If he had more than 2, he had 3 which is still not an insane number, but not something that is very good either.

Really? Lauvao seemed at 100% this year. He only had 1 game where he didn’t have full practice the week before and that was week 8. He was maybe on the injury report 3 times.

How many times have I seen those other guys on the injury report? mack was on there once, Thomas was on there once or twice, and Pinkston was on there 3 times.

Our line was fine by the end of the year because Lauvao showed more consistency and Pashos was healthy. We need a long term replacement for Pashos though.

I teach good life choices. That's why I almost didn't graduate high school.

I would hope if RGIII was still there at 4 someone behind us would offer a trade to move up.
Don’t want RGIII one bit.

Honestly I would hope they finish the Defense in this draft and fix the O line. If they finish off the D at least one side of the ball would be complete. And with a key FA signing WR or DE just run with what we have.

Next year there are what 12 QB’s coming out? I like those odds better than hoping you get the stud out of 2 qb’s in the top 4 picks.

Its the NFL, nothing ever “finishes.” The steelers recently spent a pair of first rounders on their defense, and the ravens are spending there too. Even the best units on either side of the ball are continually losing and adding pieces.

Blah blah blah you sound like Charlie Brown’s teacher.

Last i checked the Steelers and ravens are getting old on their Defense so of course they would draft for youth now.

While we are young we still need LB’s and another DE as well as safety and CB.

But getting the front 7 squared away would go a long way to making this team much better.

by Brwnstown on Jan 15, 2012 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

we have already got 5 guys in the front 7 that can be solid starters at least in 2012. I am fine with Gocong at SLB with maybe a sprinkling of Fujita. We need another DE and a quicker WLB. Both of those can easily be found in the 2nd/3rd rounds. No reason to overdraft a Quinton Coples.

They are definitely very different interviews. I think this 4 o’clock one was a lot better.

On McCoy – Heckert continues to really going out of his way to defend McCoy (every aspect) in response to any questions.
On Hillis – Heckert refuses to say that the Browns want him back, in stark contrast to Dawson and other FAs from prior seasons.
On drafting QB at 4 – stresses BPA, completely regardless of position (more of not ruling anything out)
On Hardesty – He still thinks he just needs to be healthy (it’s a shame a healthy Hardesty doesn’t exist)
On the WCO – It’s just a system, based on personal, rare brief blurb where he pins the offensive woes on the personal

"The tragedy of life is not that man loses, but that he almost wins."

by Simmsinns on Jan 12, 2012 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

Bull and Fox did a really good job of pulling out that response about Hillis. After the interview they both agreed, and I think it’s obvious now, Hillis will not be in a Browns uniform next season. In my opinion, they’ll throw him an extreme lowball offer that they entirely expect him to decline (and I’m not talking about an offer that is arguably fair, I’m guessing lower).

I hope I’m wrong, and everyone else that listened to this answer and came to the same logical conclusion is wrong.
We have, at the very least, a 25 year old RB that showed he can play very well when healthy. They only way I think it’s a good idea to let him walk is that if he’s honestly holding out for Chris Johnson money, which I think is unlikely, considering he won’t get that anywhere. Hardesty is shattered glass, Jackson is not a good starter. To me, this is just one more hole to fill if he’s gone. My biggest fear is that with Hillis gone we draft Trent Richardson. And we all know what’s wrong with that picture.

They essentially just said the same thing just now, adding that Hillis will only be back if no other team is willing to be that low offer, which the number they put on it was (roughly) 25% chance that Hillis is back next season.

I guess we can apply the idea that wouldn’t be productive to this issue too, considering Shurmur is here to stay. The thing is, he’s either not being honest at all (more likely) or he’s delusional as far as head coaching goes (less likely).

by HenryDawg on Jan 13, 2012 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

Man, my chipping was embarrassing today. Chilly dipped horribly a few times. Missed some simple 4 footers. Easily could have shot 77 but walked away with 83. Short game killed me. Oh well. It was still fun.

And I’m sorry if me golfing during the winter pisses you off. :P

by Brownie's Year on Jan 13, 2012 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

I’m just teasing because I’m jealous. We got our first snow today and I officially removed the clubs from the trunk :( It sucks. As soon as your game is really coming around the seasons over.

I hate when my short game is off. I have no long game so I totally depend on getting up and down to make par. I did start gaining back some yardage this year though after getting back on a fitness program and am hoping to keep that going into next year.

by HenryDawg on Jan 13, 2012 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

What’s wrong with your long game? Irons? They can be intimidating but the loft is basically a psych out. Swing it like a wedge. Don’t change your feet. Swing smooth. Ever since I put that in my mind I’m not scared of the 3,4,or 5. Right before I start my swing I say to myself "just like a PW". Actually, I use that methodology on every club except the driver.
My driver swing is with a different mentality. I swing a Callaway TI head with a 6.0 felx steel shaft. I went with steel because my swing is so damn fluent I can generate mass torque (I’m really tired of people telling me how good my swing is. Strangers watch me at the range). I kept pushing right with the graphite shaft because the head was too far behind my shoulder at contact. The steel shaft is perfect for me.

Anyways, what brand sticks are swinging?

by Brownie's Year on Jan 13, 2012 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

Well I actually used to be able to hit beautiful long irons, high and long and did it just the way you said, I basically got to the top, then just turn my hips and don’t even pay attention to what my arms are doing. I strike my irons pretty solid, but the last few years as I got older and stopped working out I started losing distance fast. I started working out vigorously last year, including strength training and took about 15 lessons and got my swing back pretty close to where I want it and my distance off the tee much, much better. I could start hitting 6,7, and 8s into the green on most par 4s. Now I just got work on accuracy, since I was always short of the green I never really noticed. I bought snow sticks and am going to work on the range this winter on target practice. I’ll tell you old age is hell. You have to work your ass off just to stay the same weight you were even 5 years ago.

Clubs, looking for a new driver, probably going to get fit but right now I’m using a TM r7 10 deg. R flex, which is way to much loft, I hit my drives dead center down the fairway, but to high and floaty to get a lot of roll. I’ll probably get a fitting from my trainer soon. Irons are Ping i3+, I got fit for them a few years ago when I hit it farther. They have stiff shafts and I could probably gain a little with some R flex but I still like them more than other irons I’ve tried. Putter, still rocking the 2ball, which is sort of embarrassing, but I can roll the ball pretty well with it so I’m sticking with it for now.

Ahhh now I’m withdrawing. I’ll probably hit the dome this weekend :)

by HenryDawg on Jan 13, 2012 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

Also thanks for the tip about swinging everything like a wedge, I’m going to be working on that.

I wouldn’t have any idea what its like to be complimented on my swing, but I know what its like to see a sweet swing. I’m sure it is annoying after awhile, but most of us would gladly take it, especially after looking at all the hacks cursing and tossing clubs like they should never miss a shot.

by HenryDawg on Jan 13, 2012 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

Not to sound like a huge asshole, but I do have a pro swing. I’ll golf with strangers and they’ll talk about it constantly. They’ll give me their phone number after the round and complement me as if I care. This has been happening since I was 15. So yeah, it does get a bit irritating. Especially since I’m having trouble cracking 76 lately.

by Brownie's Year on Jan 13, 2012 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

Especially since I’m having trouble cracking 76 lately.

LOL, that’s just depressing for me, but I know how golf is, when I couldn’t break a 100 I would give my left nut to do it, then I shot 84 and I’ld give my left nut to break 80. It’s a sick game and I almost, almost mind you, feel sorry for guys like you who need to break freaking 70 to feel good. That level of perfection just isn’t something I can even relate to. Given that, I love shooting a 76 without even trying – something about a zone I hear?

by HenryDawg on Jan 14, 2012 12:11 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I know where you’re coming from. And I’m sorry if you think I’m acting better than you. That’s not the case. I just love golf so much I want to help others in any way I can. That’s why I give you and DN some of my thought process. It’s hard for me to talk about my game because I feel it sucks and most think I’m being a baby. When I was younger I would come home and my dad would ask what I shot. I would be so mad that I shot a 78 that I would slam my sticks on the ground and go to my room. Completely immature 18 year old.

You said it truthfully and correct. Perfection is what I used to strive for. But it’s more about the time out there and relaxing. I’m old enough to play for fun now. Getting drunk, shooting a 80 is all that matters. The key word is FUN.

Honestly though, for golf lovers, seeing someone with a great swing is big deal. I used to always enjoy watching my dad play because of the smoothness of his swing. There’s a clip on youtube of Ben Hogan explaining the golf swing and then they show him swinging in regular speed and slow motion. I’m sure I’ve watched it 100 times.

I can only imagine how beautiful your dad’s swing is.

by Brownie's Year on Jan 14, 2012 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

I have two uncles who had golf scholarships to SIU (Southern Illinois U.). I remember when I was a kid staying at my grandma’s house seeing their closets full of trophys. One of them was drafted and served in Vietnam. He was the best of the two and I believe he was good enough to turn pro but Vietnam put an end to that dream.

I played several times with both of them when I was a teenager. I’ll never forget the first time I played with my uncle Michael at a course in his home town in Southern Illinois. First hole – about a 340 yard par 4. He steps up, casually cranks a beautiful drive – rolls right up next to the green. I was in complete awe of that swing. Still am every time I think of that shot.

That was my understanding.

One nice thing is that it certainly takes away some of the expense that many people who play have to deal with. My dad has so many clubs/balls/etc. that I never have to buy those things.

Resident Tim Couch Apologist.

by Dawg Nuts on Jan 14, 2012 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

Actually my mom’s side of the family was the “golf side” – her brothers were the golf prodigies (her family was big on sports in generally really… my grandad on that side is in the Illinois basketball hall of fame as a high school coach). My Dad played basketball but only played a little golf when he was young.
I never had clubs til I was a teen – one of my high school friends was on the golf team and I used to go play with him after I begged my Dad into buying me a cheap set.

That was my understanding.

I stopped playing after my teens but picked up the game years later while living in Texas. I used to play a couple times a month for years while living in Austin. I haven’t played much since I moved to North Carolina though, but I do play every time I travel to Austin (have a buddy down there and we know all the courses around Austin).

That was my understanding.

assumptions about Texas

No, you’re pretty much right, you can play almost any time of year. Only thing is the summer weather conditions last about half the year down there and if you’re not used to that kind of heat it can be brutal. I’ve played hundreds of rounds down there and probably over half of them were in weather between 90 and 105 degrees.

That was my understanding.

by HenryDawg on Jan 15, 2012 11:05 AM EST up reply actions

Yes. I really need to get off my ass and get out and play some of them. So far I’ve only played a small course not far from where I live – its pretty nice but nothing like some of the courses I’ve heard about. The Southern Pines / Pinehurst area is only about an hour or so away. I haven’t been down there yet and I’m itching to check it out.

That was my understanding.

by burntorangeandbrown on Jan 15, 2012 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

Your rockin’ the 2-ball? I assume it’s a Odyssey White Hot series. That was a huge fad about 10years ago. I’m not laughing because I’m still using my ‘98 Odyssey Rossie II.

Are you talking about the r7 with the weight adjustment screws? It’s not a bad club, just never was able to see myself fiddling around with that stuff mid-round.
There’s nothing wrong with a 10 degree. I’m swinging that now. If you’re skying it too much you might want to play the ball 2 inches back in your stance. Or simply tee it a few mm’s lower than what you think is right. But I don’t blame you for wanting to go to 9. I’m thinking of doing the same thing. When you can go 275 with no help there’s a problem. Not getting any roll.

How do you like your PINGs? My friend plays PING G15 and he hits them pretty damn well. My Titleist DCIs are rocks now (no pop anymore) and am looking to get a new set in a few weeks with my tax return. I’m leaning towards Callaway Diablo or the X-20. Any input you have will be appreciated.

by Brownie's Year on Jan 13, 2012 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah its an Odyssey White Hot, it was one of the first ones of the line and a Christmas present. I just think its almost cheating how easy it is to line up a putt which is why I’m embarrassed by it but screw it, its legal and its no worse than a belly putter which should be illegal. I have the r7 with screws but I haven’t once touched them, I leave them in neutral or whatever it came as. Newer drivers are just longer period with longer shafts and better weighting. I’ve hit a few and its pretty significant.

I’ve had other people tell me I tee it too high, I just like it way up in the air on the tee so I can sweep it but I did play around with a lower tee last year with good results, they just weren’t consistent. Old habits are hard to break. I love my pings, but I wouldn’t want any fatter of an iron. Even at my level, I prefer a thinner iron, I even hit blades really well. Something about a fat iron makes me want to sweep it, while a thin blade makes me feel like I just have to hit the nail behind the ball and end up with better contact. DCIs were awesome, but if you hit them well Callaways may be a little too think for you. Try them, but also check out some Mizuno forged blades, I love those things. Feel like butter with good contact.

by HenryDawg on Jan 14, 2012 12:19 AM EST up reply actions

I’ve played with several people with that 2-ball putter. And they couldn’t hit a damn put to save their life. If you feel you’re cheating than you must be a good putter. The way I see it is that the person makes the put, not the putter.

Good call on the Callaway thickness. Those irons do look weird as hell when you swing em’. They’re super fat. Now you got me thinking. Maybe I’ll just stick with Titleist.

by Brownie's Year on Jan 14, 2012 3:58 AM EST up reply actions

I use a 30+ year old simple, heel-shafted blade with no real offset and no frills. I tried a couple of other newer and fancier putters and hated them. Putting is all about what feels good for you.

You should give it a shot, there are probably 9 hole courses near you that cost $10 to walk. My second date with my wife we went to one and she had never swung a club in her life. We hit a few on the range, then tee’d one up and she was a natural drawer of the ball! I think she has natural skills but I haven’t gotten her to play since. If she had started earlier in life, I always tease her that we need to have a girl so I can quit my job and caddie for her on the LPGA (plus there are more female golf scholarships than there are golfers).

Just FYI, and this comes from a discussion in an earlier thread, I put together a list of QBs taken in the first round of the draft between 1990 and 2005. I’m getting about a 40% success rate – I judged this subjectively, so feel free to disagree with whether a guy was/is successful. It seems like the success rate has improved over time, by the way.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AnXugB8J_7I3dEM4aGlQby1BSE9fM2ZESEFPZHlwY3c

Thanks – I will do that at some point. I just added a sheet on WRs, too, which appears to show a 44%-ish success rate between 1995 and 2005.

As with QBs, this is somewhat subjective (I generally used the criterion that receivers had to have at least 5k career yards to be called successful and less if they’re still active).

Personally I hope we use FA to add veterans difference makers to both sides of the ball, and trade out of both 1st round spots and load up on young talented draftee’s.

We have not olny a talent deficiency, but complete lack of depth. There’s going to be a crap load of Cap casulties this year, and we have the cash to pick up some good players.

by crazyL80 on Jan 13, 2012 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

I think if we keep trading out of high first round spots our talent deficiency will continue. I know high draft picks scare Browns fans but its not like there’s as much risk as there used to be and Heckert seems to be pretty good at this draft thing.

by HenryDawg on Jan 13, 2012 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think staying in the top 5 is as important as using your draft picks wisely. Look at how Sheard and Little turned out this year and they were 2nd round guys. Certainly they don’t represent a trend towards “talent deficiency”. You are more likely to get an elite player high in the first, but if you use the picks right and get a good deal on trades, you can build just as effective of a team.

That being said, few elite QBs drop to the late teens-early 20s in the first.

I teach good life choices. That's why I almost didn't graduate high school.

by bross09 on Jan 13, 2012 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

Few elite anything drop past the first round. Sheard is very good, but he isn’t elite and he probably never will be. Our depth isn’t great but it isn’t what it used to be either. I think a couple game changing players will go a lot further on this team as currently constructed than they would have two years ago.

I agree, but imo you can generally live without those game changers you get in the top 10 unless they are QBs.

I apologize if I have offended anyone. I will graciously bow-out until after the draft. Have a nice day.

Anyway, it is my birthday. Please don’t massacre me when i’m gone, see above. And again, have a nice day.

Happy Birthday. (Not sarcasm.)

Perfect. The season might be over, but the Factory of Sadness is always open.

You were back two weeks ago, weren’t you?

by BuenosAires_Dawg on Jan 14, 2012 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t know what the hell it is about this team that keeps me coming back for more and more. I’m not from Cleveland, I’m not even American, I’ve never attended a single football game in my life (I doubt the Penn Quakers count) and I’m hooked to this f’ing team.

Welcome to the club.

That was my understanding.

by burntorangeandbrown on Jan 14, 2012 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

Do you live in America though? If you like the Browns so much you NEED to find a way to watch a live game.

by Brownie's Year on Jan 14, 2012 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

You can get nfl.com NFL game pass overseas and watch all the games live (if you have it in the US, you can only use the ‘REWIND’ and watch them the next day).

That was my understanding.

When I say “live” I mean in person.

by Brownie's Year on Jan 14, 2012 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

Unfortunately, my 3 live games have all been losses. But it was still awesome being there.

I’m batting 0 as well in all of my 1 games that I’ve been to.

I was lucky enough to be at every home game in the 07 season. I actually think of all the games I’ve been to I have only seen maybe 3 losses!! My first game was a Monday night game against the Niners, September 13th, 1993. Victory!!

I’ve been to two NFL games in my lifetime. The first was a St. Louis Cardinals game my Dad took me to when I was a kid.

The second was in November in 1985. I was living in San Marcos, Tx (before I moved up to Austin). I drove up to Dallas with some friends to watch the Bears play the Cowboys (I’ll assume you guys are familiar with that ‘85 Bears team…:-/). All of us were rooting for the Bears (I’ve always hated the Cowboys). We ended up sitting in a section where there were quite a few Bears fans. One guy was actually wearing a Bear suit – LMAO. The Bears trounced them 44-0. We were pretty lit up (in more than one way) and having a bit too much fun, but didn’t get too obnoxious. There were some Dallas fans that starting getting pretty nasy with us by the time it was over tough. Good thing we had a pretty good sized group.

That was my understanding.

That’s awesome, how did you get to be a Browns fan?

by HenryDawg on Jan 14, 2012 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe i’m an idiot for coming back on here, but I wanted to clarify some things. I was just having fun with the smokescreen thing. I wasn’t flip-flopping. By saying out loud I don’t think they are taking RG3, I was hoping some people actually take that seriously because this site gets a lot of national exposure. I actually really want him and despite what I said, I think the front office might too. It would help them out if the rest of the NFL didn’t think they did. The only thing I took seriously was the “psychologist” thing. I’m a nurse and if the wrong people actually saw me allowing myself to be alluded to as something beyond my scope of practice, my career could be jeopardized. I take that VERY seriously. Beyond that, thanks Rufio for your post about flagging, I appreciate that, and you B19K for “expecting to see me Sunday”. And thanks to everyone else here that I actually give a crap about (including you HD), but i’m going to take that hiatus. See you after the draft.

I like you man, I just wish you would stop reminding me and everyone else of one of my many, um, less than stellar moments. But you got a live with the past, its not the first or last time I will publicly embarrass myself. Hope to see you back here before then.

You’ve never bothered me with your comments. But this pity card stuff is getting annoying. You’re too serious about this crap.
