Free Agent WR's...are we to seek one of these?
I know this is not all the receivers that will be free agents after 2011 season, but just a couple that intrigued me and that may not cost Cleveland high dollars if they were to pursue. I am not sure Justin Blackmon will be available where the Browns currently sit at the 4th overall pick.
Robert Meachem: 2011 stats- 40 rec. 620 yds. 15.5 avg. 6 tds.
Pierre Garcon: 2011 stats- 70 rec. 947 yds. 13.5 avg. 6 tds.
Plaxico Burress: 2011 stats- 45 rec. 612 yds. 13.6 avg. 8 tds.
Eddie Royal: 2011 stats- 19 rec. 155 yds. 8.2 avg. 1 td
Early Doucet: 2011 stats- 54 rec. 689 yds. 12.8 avg. 5 tds.

Along with Meachem on the Saints, I’ve heard Colston will be a free agent too. If the right price, I’d take a good look at him if we don’t want to draft a stud WR.
Brees is too…..wouldn’t mind landing him….it’s ok to dream, right?

There are also these unrestricted FA receivers:
DeSean Jackson (PHI) 25
Vincent Jackson (SD) 29
Dwayne Bowe (KC) 27
Stevie Johnson (BUF) 26
Marques Colston (NO) 29
"The tragedy of life is not that man loses, but that he almost wins."
maybe Bowe and Colston. Not too interested in the rest.

yes, i knew of these names as well, and knowing these guys are legit playmakers, i’m sure most will be seeking a “pretty” pay day…..but the Browns do have the money…so……would be nice to land one.

Johnson would be a good fit here. He’s young and has that swagger.

I actually agree. Of all the receivers I mentioned, Johnson is who I’d want the most.
"The tragedy of life is not that man loses, but that he almost wins."
If you guys are talking about Stevie Johnson I totally see him fitting here. He doesn’t have jerk swagger, he has some swagger from growing up in the Hunter’s Point neighborhood in SF but he stayed out of trouble writing music and turned out a good kid. I thought he had dropsies but someone here corrected me and with everything else about him I would love to have him. I could definitely see him and Haden hanging out.
He’s some immaturity issues (i.e. costly celebration penalty), but not nearly as bad as say, DeSean Jackson. Stevie has also dealt with some dropped passes, but I think he’s grown (and will continue too) from his mistakes. I can definitely see him wanting to stay in Buffalo though, I think he’s that kind of guy.
"The tragedy of life is not that man loses, but that he almost wins."
I wonder if Chan Gailey wants him back though. It seemed like he got pretty sick of Stevie’s immaturity toward the end of last season.
That is a good question, here’s a piece from the Buffalo Bill’s website saying Gailey “can make that work.”
"Yes, I am confident we can make that work," Gailey told the Howard Simon show. "It’s not me, it’s we. It’s he and I and everybody that’s involved in this thing. It falls on my shoulders I understand that. But if we don’t solve problems with the ‘we’ identity we’re going to make a mistake. Everybody has got some action in this and a sense of responsibility in this.
"If I thought Stevie was a bad person then we probably wouldn’t even be having this conversation. But I know he’s not. I know he’s a good person deep down. I don’t think he wants to hurt the team. I don’t think that at all. I don’t see that being a big issue going forward."
Gailey then expressed his greatest concern, which would be losing Johnson in free agency.
"The worst thing is you might lose a good player," he said. "That’s the worst thing. You don’t want to lose a good football player, so hopefully we can work it out."

I’ll take the immature celebration penalty over a bad attitude. Celebration penalties are dumb anyway. How come nobody ever gets flagged for doing the LBJ thing in our stadium but don’t you dare mock Plaxico.
I’ll take the immature celebration penalty over a bad attitude.
Absolutely agree on that.
How come nobody ever gets flagged for doing the LBJ thing in our stadium but don’t you dare mock Plaxico.
It’s because he went to the ground in the crashing airplane bit. The Plaxico thing was awesome, and wouldn’t have been flagged if he didn’t follow it up with going to the ground.
"The tragedy of life is not that man loses, but that he almost wins."
I didn’t know about that. Glad they’ve found an unrelated and arbitrary way to settle a subjective argument.
Yeah, there three things they can deem automatically flag worthy regarding TD celebrations:
1. going to the ground, 2. with a group, 3. taking an extended period of time
"The tragedy of life is not that man loses, but that he almost wins."
I thought using a prop also automatically draws a flag. Like when Stevie had the Why So Serious paper under his jersey.

I don’t know, I don’t think Jauron being our DC will have anything to do with it.

I think the fact that he coached Johnson in the past does play some factor. Just with the idea of familiarity.

Jauron made it very clear that he has no interest at all in our offense. They asked him about Colt and what he thought of him at a press conference and he basically said he never sees him play.

I do get this, but I don’t think that rules out the Johnson connection completely. I see them as different issues (one is them coming to him as a suggestion from back when he was a HC and the other is evaluating the offense).

What worries about him is that he has underachieved in the past, but he is an incredible talent. I’d like the add more so than DJax or VJax. But I still think he’d cost quite a pretty penny.
"The tragedy of life is not that man loses, but that he almost wins."
It’s a risk, no doubt. But if we don’t take Blackmon and the right receiver doesn’t fall to us in the draft, I would take that risk. He would be expensive, but I don’t think quite as expensive as the Jacksons.

by Brownie's Year on Jan 18, 2012 11:29 PM EST reply actions
Colston isn’t going anywhere. Garcon, Johnson or Bowe would be good. Cleveland isn’t a glamorous enough location for an ego like DJax.
I’ve said this before, so I know I sound like a broken record. I think players would rather run around in Florida or in a dome in December than NE Ohio. Our money is not as good as that of most other teams. We would have to pay well over the market price for any of these guys, which conflicts with the frugality of the front office. Free Agency acquisition of really good players does not happen for the Browns. Sorry, but it’s the truth. I wish it was different.
I'm entitled to my opinion. Especially if I'm wrong.
Agree with your list and could I talk you into giving Eddie Royal a chance? He would be a good risk. Think he has seen the injury bug – but if he could get healthy he is a super elusive, YAC guy that would just fit perfectly into the WCO.
Change isn't good or bad it just "is". Don Draper of Madmen
My like not top 10 reason for wanting RG3, assuming he turns out good – FAs will want to play with him.
I agree with that but as I’ve said before, I think we have to try to sign FA’s in March, before they know we have RG3.

I dont think the city of Cleveland plays a big role in the decision. It probably plays some of it, but the main issue I see in trying to draw a WR here without dramatically over paying is the offense in general is in disarray. Why would you want to come here with question marks all over the O? I highly doubt that WRs will be lining up to play with Colt, Shurmer and the rest of this offense.
I like Johnson and Bowe. The intriguing one to me is Doucet. Maybe could be had a bit more cheaply than others and has a positive upside.

I was 6, so I wasn’t old enough to here all the hype, but having read up on it, that’s always been my fear with FA wide receivers. I think the players (across all positions) that are simply chasing the most money, are also the ones that are least likely to keep giving 100% once the check clears, case in point: Albert Haynesworth.

Slightly OT, since it’s not about free agency, but the talk around town here in Wisconsin is that GB might part ways with Donald Driver (he’d be a salary cap casualty). He’s getting a little long in the tooth, but I think he’d be a good, solid addition for the couple of years he has left. He wouldn’t light the world on fire here, but I think he’d be the best WR on the roster from day one. He’s got a great balance of tough and gritty while having the finesse required for making critical 3rd-and-long or red zone catches. And, yeah, he can handle “Cleveland in December.”
I don’t know the process of picking up a guy dumped by a team (do we trade? Or just grab him on waivers?), but I’d think it wouldn’t be too costly for us. Whether he’d want to play is another story entirely. What do y’all think?
Just a hunch, but if Driver leaves GB I see him staying in the NFC.

Old to be sure, but I’m not thinking he’s too old. With all the really young guys at WR and the rookie(s) we’ll likely draft, it might be nice to have a 14-year WCO vet on the squad. He probably knows more about it than Shurmur…. Plus, the dude (Driver, that is) can still play.
As far as a guy off his rookie contract, I suspect the “I won’t play in Cleveland” thing is for real. We’d have to pay a lot to get that type of WR.
by mister serious on Jan 20, 2012 1:03 PM EST up reply actions
I agree. I think it’d be nice to have a decent player that also could mentor some of the younger players. As much as I hate to use this analogy… Hines Ward.
The question is… will he want to accept a role mentoring the younger guys?
