Tony Grossi's "Inadvertent" Tweet
Turns out Tony made an insulting comment regarding Randy Learner on Twitter. He apologized in a cleveland.com panel discussion and the site had a written apology also. The tweet was removed. The URL above is to the comment pre-removal.

I’m not a Tony hater nor do I think he is the end-all, be-all. He is often interesting and some of his analysis is worth while reading. I do not think these guys should be tweeting though until they thoroughly understand the technology. Apparently he apologized to Lerner too but I don’t understand the weight of that when the tweet pretty clearly shows his true feelings.

My biggest issue with Grossi is the way he handles his twitter. anyone that disagrees with him is insulted and belittled by him or his crony followers. Sometimes he is insightful, but often he is just full of hot air.

That apology is pretty worthless. If I were Randy Lerner I would let the Plain Dealer know that the Browns only give press passes to professionals, and Tony Grossi obviously isn’t one of those. I also don’t understand how he could call that inadvertent. Who the heck was he talking to? The tweet right above that one is pretty insulting as well. Someone asks Tony if it’s his job to listen to interviews pertaining to the Browns (AKA interviews of the owner) and Tony says it isn’t. What exactly is his job then?

lerner already hated grossi, so not much changes.
“inadvertent” is a great word for that tweet … translation: i meant to say that, just not for everyone to see. also, i love:
there was a comment attributed to me on my Twitter account
wtf is that supposed to mean? is he trying to say his twitter was hacked?

That’s such a perfect response to the situation. It implies that he somehow wasn’t responsible for it without actually stating anything. Fantastic. He should run for political office.

Tony Grossi is dumber than every single poster on this website.
If that hack put out anything at the level of this website his face would peel off and the mouth breathers at Cleveland.com would die under a cascade of facts and reasoning.
They can’t fire this turd fast enough.
The big queston is is he worse then MKC? The Plain Dealer has some awful writers.

I posted about this in the other thread, but I will actually stand up for Tony on this one, don’t think he should face any punishment for this.
The problem is that when you work in a very public industry anything you do that could make the company look bad is grounds for termination or discipline.

Yes, but he is also assigned to cover the Browns and there is a certain conflict of interest if it appears that the newspaper is not allowed to be critical of the organization. His comments were probably over the line, but at the same time may be useful in establishing the PD as completely independent.
Lately, the PD is completely independent of good writing so I don’t see the problem here.

Lately? I have yet to see good writing about the Browns in the PD. Although their Cavs and Indians coverage is pretty good.

I guess I am one of the few that doesn’t like Pluto all that much. I like that he covers all 3 sports, but his opinions seem pretty generic and obvious. Doesn’t have much in the way of insider info.
i think you have to remember the context for pluto. you’re exactly right that he’s asked to be a generalist cleveland sports commentator … he’s not expected to be an expert in any single sport, and i don’t believe he’s expected to generate scoops or leads or insider stuff. he’s supposed to be a sort of “everyfan” mouthpiece. i think he does an excellent job of that, has fairly smart opinions and observations (though they may often be fairly obvious), and his writing style and presentation are pretty good (holding aside the columns when he has a conversation w/ himself…). plus, he’s eternally rational, which i appreciate. he’s rarely too high or too low about what’s going on in cleveland sports.
by DontCallMeJoey on Jan 23, 2012 4:14 PM EST up reply actions
his observations aren’t as obvious to those who aren’t tuned in like your averaged DBN reader.

by DontCallMeJoey on Jan 20, 2012 2:03 PM EST up reply actions
There is a difference between covering a team and taking a swipe at the owner. His personal opinion on the owner has nothing to do with the product on the field which is what he is paid to cover. Honestly the Browns could revoke the PDs press access if they really wanted to and I think it would be kinda funny.
by Justin Kowalczyk on Jan 19, 2012 4:50 PM EST up reply actions
I disagree. If he wants to call Lerner a bad owner he can have at it. But this is personal, it isn’t professional at all. You say this is good for establishing the PD as an independent paper, but I could not disagree more. Nothing Tony Grossi writes about the Browns can ever be taken seriously ever again, because he has an agenda.

Update II: Whispers from the friendly confines of the Plain Dealer newscomplex tell Scene that Grossi’s errant, insulting tweet might have the Browns beat writer in trouble today. Newsroom rumors, which are all they are at the moment, have Grossi actually in the office today, which as one person pointed out, never happens. That might not be anything — he did have a taping of some inside sports videocast for Cleveland.com. But, the editors and bosses have been talking to everyone’s favorite “most irrelevant writer in Cleveland,” and folks are assuming it’s a dressing down.

… and then I remembered it is Tony Grossi. Confusion = gone.
