DBN: Writing Position Available

The powers that be at SB Nation have been pushing for each NFL blog to recruit additional writer(s), so this is the official announcement that a writing position is available for Dawgs By Nature.
Unlike when we have recruited in the past, the requirements are much more strict this time. The major requirement is that you must be able to make at least 20-25 posts per month. That is a big commitment, but it is still reasonable as it is less than one post per day, on average. Other recommended requirements include the following:
- Ability to write grammatically sound articles, without the need of an editor (perfection is not needed; you can see that based on the numerous errors you'll see in my posts from time-to-time).
- Passion for the writing/talking about the Browns without having to be motivated by pay. When I started DBN in 2006, I never intended for it to be some "get rich" scheme. There is a small stipend associated with this position, with an emphasis on small.
- In terms of length, the articles do not need to be of column-length for every post. Generally, posts should be over 150 words at a minimum.
Preference will be given to people who (1) have been regular/active users on DBN, and (2) have a good grasp of the community standards in general. Please contact me at pokorny@pfcritics.com if you are interested in applying. No special resume is necessary, but a couple of sentences explaining why you're interested, if you feel you can make the commitment, ideas you have, etc. might be beneficial.
Thanks,
-Chris Pokorny

Dammit Chris. I want to do it again but 20 a month? Last time it was hard enough. Are slightly OT topics allowed?

Can you hire two so the requirement can be split in half? And also, what even happened to Brownsyup?

I’d have to inquiry about the split-in-half idea. I’d pursue something like that if the candidates seem to fit that role better.

Well, technically, we could always use lesser time writers, just as our current staff does. I still need to recruit someone who can fulfill the 20-25 role though.

Like Chris said in his terms, the articles don’t have to be full blown write ups (which you normally do). You can easily come up with some topics for discussions in a paragraph or two.

I just don’t get how he can switch allegiances so quickly. His most recent post on the Detroit site:
Now that Caldwell is gone, maybe we can have Sims back.
I put emphasis on the “we” part. It’d be like if I just switched to being a Bucs fan and said “we” in reference to who the team should hire.
His post frequency has been significantly down since going from Cleveland-to-Detroit, though.

I don’t get out as much as I want. It’s once a week now if I’m lucky. My handicap is 8. When I was 18 y/o it was a 4. I did shoot a 74 when I was 18.

I’ve got a weekend job at a golf course. It’s awesome because I get paid a little extra cash and I get free golf whenever I can get out there, which includes a quick 9 after I get off of work during the week. I’m like you, when I was 18 I was a low 70’s golfer, but am now pretty pleased to break 80. 65 is my low, believe it or not. That was a crazy good day at the course.
Wow, 65 is a great day.
I was waiting for football season to end to get a part time at a course around here. The free golf makes it worth it.

I played Scarlet with a freshman who as hoping to try out for the men’s team and watched him shoot 65. It was pretty amazing, I think he had a couple of eagles and just made birdies all day and that was after bogeying the first.
I’ve never played with a lights out golfer like that. must be amazing to see it first hand.
by Brownie's Year on Jan 24, 2012 9:57 PM EST up reply actions
I had one of my better rounds (on that course, which is a complete B****), something in the 80s, probably because I spent of the day watching him hit 180 yrd. 7 irons and didn’t really pay attention to what I was doing. Not thinking on the golf course is something my instructor and I work a lot on.
That’s one correct way to go about it. That “F*ck it” attitude. When you try too hard you get the Cundifs.
A 180 7iron is awesome!!! Even with the new set I get in a couple weeks I’ll hit it 165 at best. If I gained some weight I bet I could squeeze 5 yards out of each club.

Actually someone gave me one of those books, I’ll have to check if its Rotella, it might be. In any case, it wasn’t about putting, and I am actually a wicked putter (as the words leave my mouth I know I’m destined to a season full of 3 and 4 putts) but I read a few chapters and the on the course mind clearing exercises helped a ton. I played better instantly, however, I also like to play fast so I have to force myself to take the time to do them.
Even the stuff he talks about on the greens can apply to full shots or the short game. Like picking the smallest target possible. To paraphrase, he suggests focusing not just on the target (on the greens, it’s the cup of course), but a blade of grass on the inside of the cup. It’s crazy how it just frees everything up.
Lining up to a small target is the best way to do it.
I putt at coins in my living room. Also put magazines under the rug so I can play breaks.

by The New Kardiac Kids on Jan 25, 2012 1:19 PM EST up reply actions
If following through corrected your slice then the follow through corrected something in your swing.
by Brownie's Year on Jan 25, 2012 2:01 PM EST up reply actions
That has nothing to do with it, slice is from the club head cutting from out to in accross the face of the golf ball, causing it to have a left to right rotation which makes go right.
Short term fix is to close your stance, so basically do the exact opposite of aiming left, aim your body slightly right, you’ll have an easier time making an in to out swing and may even get a little draw. A PGA pro could probably fix it in 1 or 2 lessons for the long term.

I agree, even if you only play a couple times a month, but if you’re a few times a year golfer just looking for a way to get through a round without killing someone of one fairway over I think “tricks” are OK and they can work for a round or two, but much like Tebow, its not usually sustainable.
You’re totally spot on with that. I don’t think about the non average golfer. Which is something I should take in to consideration when we all talk about the game. You’re right about the tricks things.
The “killing someone” made me laugh. Have you ever been tagged before?

It doesn’t hurt that bad. Kind of like a paintball. My friend got hit in the head once on the 18th. He got pissed when he realized he was bleeding. And being the asshole that I am, I fell on the ground laughing.

It’s funny as hell when it doesn’t happen to you!
by Brownie's Year on Jan 25, 2012 10:37 PM EST up reply actions
Without seeing your swing first hand, I can only guess what’s wrong.
Your stance (aiming) could easily just be off. You may think you’re pushing it but in reality you’re hitting it right where you’re aiming. Look to see which way your divot is pointing. If it’s pointed to the right than your aim is off. An easy way to fix that, when practicing, is to lay a club on the ground as a guide. Then align your feet with the club.
If it’s not that then it could be anything, really. Shifting your weight too soon, swinging your hips too soon, or even a bad grip. I’ve fixed a lot of friends’ slice/push with the grip alone. If your thumb is aligned with the middle of the club, that’s no good. Assuming you’re right handed, turn your right hand over the club a little to where your thumb is more left than middle of the shaft. Being able to see your ring finger knuckle is a good thing. So try that. If it feels wrong than it’s right. It’s called golf.
by Brownie's Year on Jan 24, 2012 9:46 PM EST up reply actions
My instructor told me 70% of right handers aim too far right. He has me using snow sticks on the range at all time and it makes a huge difference.
What the hell is a snow stick?
Sometimes when I feel my aim is off on the course I’ll take my club and drag a line in the grass. Don’t think there is any rule against that.
by Brownie's Year on Jan 25, 2012 12:13 AM EST up reply actions
Lol, you wouldn’t know, being in So Cal. They’re orange and yellow sticks that people stick in the ground so they can tell where there might be curbs when the snow gets too high. You’ll see quite a few pros carrying them in their bags, they don’t count against the club total so you’re just supposed to keep them in there all the time for when you’re on the range.
My Dad gives lessons, so I run to him when I’m frustrated. That’s frequently…

Also making sure to rotate the hands as you come through contact – so that your right hand ends up on top of the left (if you’re right handed) when your arms are parallel to the ground on the follow through. Hard to explain, but when I learned to hit a draw I hit bucket after bucket of balls with a half swing to get the feel of turning my hands over coming through the ball.
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
