You laugh, but I bet Favre ends up being some sort of a coach soon. Dude can’t play the game anymore but he can’t stay away from it.

by shep615 on Jan 27, 2012 8:59 AM EST up reply actions

id love it if farve was our qb coach. just because he was a total asshat in his final few years of the nfl doesnt mean that he cant be a great coach.

i mean, he played THE GAME for so long that he has to know a thing or two…

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Very rarely do great players become good coaches. My personal belief is that guys like that can’t comprehend why lesser players are unable to make great plays. That is one reason why I would be hesitant to have Favre around or QB’s. (Plus the whole situation between he and Aaron Rodgers was pretty toxic).

On top of all that, Favre will be on TV. He will end up going to do a pregame show. We can only hope he replaces Shannon Sharpe, Dan Marino or Micheal Irvin.

I called “Favre for OC” some months back, and people thought I was concussed!

Too bad while reading stories on Cleveland.Com, you may also have the excruciating experience of being drawn to the comments section. You don’t want to, but it’s not unlike watching the proverbial train wreck. Ugh.

I feel the same way about the Yahoo comment section.

I hate it when I here “says a league source” without saying what source it was. This could be nothing…

The ABJ is quoting their source for it here.

by GrillGuy on Jan 27, 2012 6:12 AM EST up reply actions

I am extremely down with this for several reasons.

Aside from Childress’ resume – which is outstanding – I have to think that the only reason Shurmer said he would give up his playcalling duties was to lure a guy with this kind of experience. So we get a four guys on the coaching staff with NFL Head Coaching experience (now that Shurmer has year one under his belt) and get to relieve Pat of playcalling in one move? I’m in.

I’m also of the belief that Childress was undone in Minni by Favre (who hastened Mangini’s demise in NY) and Wilf’s ramming Randy Moss down his throat when he was clearly washed up. Cutting Moss without Wilf’s blessing was pretty much Childress’ undoing. Wilf is trying too hard to be like the Rooney’s in his treatment of players – to a fault – according to some.

Hopefully he’ll be in the booth with a headset and the rumors of his abrasive relations with players will be inconsequential. Hey, can’t be any worse than Daboll’s “Hazing” of Colt, right?

The benefits far outweigh the risks in this hire, if you ask me.

What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?

by DaveDawg09 on Jan 27, 2012 11:53 AM EST reply actions

If we do hire Childress, he’ll make sure we have the best catering in the league.

Heckert’s on board with this.

by pwndabear on Jan 27, 2012 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

I still can’t get over Brett Favre directly asking Childress if he knew anything about football.

by Roger Dorn on Jan 27, 2012 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

You’re shocked that someone with an obvious, massive ego problem would question his boss’s authority or wisdom?

QB’s and HC’s both have to have substantial ego’s just to function in their landscape, I would imagine. Supreme confidence is essential.

Kosar telling Belichick “It’s MY team and will never be yours” before having to be seperated (allegedly) in the locker room comes to mind.

What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?

by DaveDawg09 on Jan 27, 2012 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

I would be inclined to ignore Favre if the reports weren’t that the whole team disrespected Chilly.

Issue number 2: Lamonte represented again! Count me as not a fan of only hiring people represented by Lamonte.

by Roger Dorn on Jan 27, 2012 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know why people make such a big deal about the Lamonte thing. Holmgren was his first client. It makes sense that all these guys who Holmgren brought up to the level of needing an agent would use his.

by HenryDawg on Jan 27, 2012 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

It’s an issue for obvious reasons, but I can spell out some of the problems when you have everyone represented by the same agent.

1. Conflict of interest when the team is essentially represented on both sides by the same person in negotiations during contract discussion. Problems with this are obvious.
2. Group think – I am of the opinion that different viewpoints and challenging the status quo is essential to building the franchise. When everyone is part of group think, it could be everyone on the same page heading down the wrong path. The with us or against us mentality gets established (and already has) and outsiders get ignored.
3. I just am not convinced that Bob Lamonte of all people is the one guy we want pulling the strings. He became big via Holmgren and this reeks of a case of Holmgren helping his buddy out.

by Roger Dorn on Jan 27, 2012 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

I agree on the groupthink problem, but I think that’s going to happen here no matter who their agent is. They are all believers in the system so we’re going to live and die by it.

I’m not seeing the conflict of interest, but I’m assuming that coach and mgmt contracts are negotiated by Lerner’s lawyers, not Holmgren’s agent, I could be completely wrong about that.

by HenryDawg on Jan 27, 2012 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

My understanding from reports I read is that negotiations were done with Shurmur by Lamonte representing both Shurmur and the Browns as Holmgren’s agent. That’s a conflict of interest.

by Roger Dorn on Jan 27, 2012 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

Additionally, there were articles written around the time suggesting that the NFL allows this practice because they view it as similar to a real estate deal in which the same agent can often times represent the buyer and the seller.

by Roger Dorn on Jan 27, 2012 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

I could understand why Lerner would be concerned with this kind of set-up monetarily wise, but as a fan, it doesn’t matter to me.

I don’t think Holmgren would pick a lesser candidate because they share an agent.

by Bernie19Kosar on Jan 27, 2012 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

The fact is we haven’t been proven otherwise. It’s statistically improbable that all of the best candidates share the same agent, and yet here we are, all coaches with the same agent. I am skeptical to say the least.

by Roger Dorn on Jan 29, 2012 12:20 AM EST up reply actions

he couldn’t control the locker room as a HC which I don’t think has anything to do with him knowing anything about football. I love favre and all, but he has shown he can be an asshat.

I think the connection to Lamonte is largely irrelevant because I think it has little to do with the actual hiring. Even before it came out that Lamonte was his agent, it was speculated that Chilly might be an option because he coached for several years alongside Pat.

I didn’t hear any rumors about the Browns tripping over themselves to get Al Saunders or mike martz. Both are Lamonte guys, but don’t run a similar offense to pat.

I teach good life choices. That's why I almost didn't graduate high school.
