Hey now. I might not make the 53 man roster, but I could totally make it as a quality control coach or waterboy. I would bring Heckert his sushi so fast.

If by sushi you mean fried douch and by so fast you mean right now, you might have a chance.

Yeah it’ d be a real bitch if we addressed almost every need on the team in one off season without blowin the salary cap.

Matt Flynn would be awful and we already have DQ for MLB.

Kuechly can and has played OLB. He was recruited as a safety for goodness sakes, it’s not like he can’t cover. In fact there’s very little Kuechly can’t do.

He is a LB that doesn’t rush the passer. Not worth the first round pick.

Thanks for admitting you don’t know what you’re talking about. When a guys record as a starter in the NFL is 2-0, and his TD to INT record as a starter is 9-3, the burden of proof lies on the guy claiming he sucks. I’m not saying Flynn is a sure thing but he’d undoubtedly be an instant upgrade and getting a QB through free agency would also allow us to use our draft picks to address other vital needs areas on our team.

My backup is the fact that he’s payed in two games, he’s a 7th round pick and you want to throw a crap ton of money at Kolb v.2

It’s stupid.

by SpecialBrownie on Jan 6, 2012 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

We have as much of a clue that Flynn would be better than Colt than we do that RGIII would be, except that Flynn has actually succeeded in NFL action.

Everyone has the potential to be a bust. Is that the crux of your entire argument? What evidence do you have to support that he’s the next Kolb and not the next Shaub? Surely a smart guy like you can do better.

"It is unlikely that anyone has ever read Nietzsche or Derrida and has been inspired to open a soup kitchen"

by troy145 on Jan 6, 2012 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

Why do you have evidence that he’ll be the next Rodgers? You don’t have anymore evidence than I do. RGIII or Luck have a lot more ability to pan out than Flynn. There’s a reason they’re rated in the 1st round. They’ll also be much much cheaper.

XBL - TheRabbit087. Get at me.

by SpecialBrownie on Jan 6, 2012 11:47 PM EST up reply actions

To be fair, in a game where the packers had nothing to gain, and the Lions could have moved up a seed, he played better, stat wise, than Rodgers. Chicken or egg, but he obviously has some ability to succeed. Even if it takes a shit ton of good players around him. Some QBs aren’t even good with that.

at least Kolb was a 2nd rounder.

by bross09 on Jan 6, 2012 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

Which, more than anything, shows that after being able to evaluate how you perform in the actual NFL, where you were drafted is largely irrelevant.

A guy who is just okay but was a first round pick isn’t automatically better than a guy who good but was a 4th round pick.

"It is unlikely that anyone has ever read Nietzsche or Derrida and has been inspired to open a soup kitchen"

by troy145 on Jan 6, 2012 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

I also think it shows that maybe Kolb has a better overall skill set. That’s more the point.

I teach good life choices. That's why I almost didn't graduate high school.

by bross09 on Jan 6, 2012 8:53 PM EST up reply actions

It shows people thought he had a better skill set before he was drafted and showed that his skill set is horrible.

"It is unlikely that anyone has ever read Nietzsche or Derrida and has been inspired to open a soup kitchen"

by troy145 on Jan 6, 2012 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

his actual gameplay shows his skillset is, in reality and in practice, horrible *

"It is unlikely that anyone has ever read Nietzsche or Derrida and has been inspired to open a soup kitchen"

by troy145 on Jan 6, 2012 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

which is MOST to the point. Can you play in the NFL? Kolb has shown he absolutely cannot. Flynn has shown that theres real possibility he can. Colt has started to assure us he cannot.

"It is unlikely that anyone has ever read Nietzsche or Derrida and has been inspired to open a soup kitchen"

by troy145 on Jan 6, 2012 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think Kolb definitively can’t play in the NFL. He was actually pretty decent this year, but this is not the point.

Flynn has shown a flash in the pan. I do like Flynn, but he only had one or two really good games. Kolb had that in his first year he got to start.

I teach good life choices. That's why I almost didn't graduate high school.

by bross09 on Jan 6, 2012 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

Kolb never looked as good Flynn has. Kolb’s best game as a starter was a 2 TD, 0 INT run at KC, but the week before that he threw three picks to 2 TD’s in relief of an injured Vick.

Thats not horrible but its not 9 TDs to 3 INTs.

"It is unlikely that anyone has ever read Nietzsche or Derrida and has been inspired to open a soup kitchen"

by troy145 on Jan 6, 2012 9:52 PM EST up reply actions

I’d argue Flynn had one really good game, but in all honestly they are pretty comparable in their unknowns.

I teach good life choices. That's why I almost didn't graduate high school.

by bross09 on Jan 7, 2012 5:28 AM EST up reply actions

You can look up Kolb’s stats in starts for Philly and make the exact same argument. He’s had some very good games for them. (that being said, I think Kolb is worthless and would groan if the Browns made a play for him)

I’m not going to be a big Flynn defender, but at least Flynn did something in two games, versus Kolb just being ridiculously overhyped after not doing anything.

by Chris Pokorny on Jan 5, 2012 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, the Kolb love made no sense whatsoever. I also think Flynn is over-hyped after just one start, but Kolb was piss poor in his prior seven starts.

Dawgs By Nature - Where winning, apparently, did some bad things.

by Simmsinns on Jan 6, 2012 5:06 AM EST up reply actions

Flynn has two starts which isn’t much but its DOUBLE what you said. :)

I think he won them both and I think his opponents in each game were genuinely competing. I mean, Flynn has shown something in two games that Seneca and Colt have never shown between them in a single game. Thats an instant, considerable upgrade.

FWIW, I never bought into the Kolb hype train either, I thought Matt Cassel was overpaid, though I thought he’d turn out better than he has. If Flynn is going at the same market rate as Cassel did, I’d pass, but I don’t think he’ll cost that much.

I think the Pats pass defense was 22nd when he faced them, and the Lions pass defense was 30.

Just feels like fools gold to me.

by Bernie19Kosar on Jan 6, 2012 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah again, I’m not saying he’s the next Aaron Rodgers. But Colt couldn’t throw six touchdowns against my flag football team, much less the 30th ranked defense in the country.

The other thing about Flynn is he, like Rodgers, was surrounded by talent in GB. Not so here in Cleveland, unless we take Blackmon and roll the dice on Broyles, who despite his injury I think still has a lot of promise.

"It is unlikely that anyone has ever read Nietzsche or Derrida and has been inspired to open a soup kitchen"

or a guy like broyles, another playmaker, even if its a lamichael james. I just get excited about the idea of a guy who has first round talent being available that late, like he’s projected to be.

If we could get James in the 3rd, it would be well worth it. I think he goes in the early second.

ya, james is WAY too good to go in the third even if that is where he is currently being projected. I feel like every fan of every team in the league is holding out for james to fall to their team in the third, but I just don’t see it happening.

Two things I like about Flynn are that he has been studying a WCO under Rodgers for a few years now. Another is that GB’s offensive line isn’t very good and Flynn was getting the ball out quickly and efficiently.

Kolb never looked very good against anybody, IMO. He didn’t always look bad but he never looked like the guy you would wanna pin your franchise too, not even for one game. Flynn has, at the very least, shown flashes.

I said somewhere else that in signing a free agent QB, we aren’t just paying for said QB, were also paying for the opportunity to use our draft picks to address other needs. I’d be satisfied with a Matt Cassel for 3 or 4 years at this point tbh.

I wouldn’t. I’d rather keep trying to strike gold in later rounds for four years than bother to overpay for some guy to come in and be average. Of course, I’d much rather not do either one of those things.

by C.b.I on Jan 5, 2012 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah. I’d say he’s one of the 15 best players in the draft, and even if he doesn’t get selected that high he’ll go before 32nd.

His instincts are great and I think he will run really well. He’s like a faster, (much) younger London Fletcher or DQ; sideline to sideline, making a ton of tackles, probably won’t rush the passer much but is going to play really well in zone coverage, stop the run, and be the first to diagnose the play.

I’m scared of Matt Flynn. First of all, he will be 27 next season and reeks of Matt Cassel. Plus, I think he will be pretty expensive. Matt Cassel got 6-60. Ryan Fitzpatrick got 6-59.

I’m not comfortable giving that kind of money to a guy that has proven so little. I know we will have to pay a rookie QB a good chunk, but Griffin is 21 years old and has a much higher ceiling. I’m willing to take that gamble.

I would actually switch the approach, throw money at a free agent WR (Stevie Johnson?) and draft the QB.

And of course, I would never use a first round pick on a LB that doesn’t rush the passer. You could get Zach Brown at OLB in the second round and he will give 95% of the production for a lower price. First round LB’s are almost never worth the price.

by Bernie19Kosar on Jan 5, 2012 11:06 PM EST reply actions

I agree with you. I would throw cash at Dwayne Bowe or Vincent Jackson and draft RG3 all day.

I would definitely be happy with Zach Brown, even if Kuechly was still on the table by some miracle, but I really dont think we need to focus on addressing RB in the first 3 rounds of the draft, especially with bjax getting healthy again.

No Jackson, Jackson, Bowe, etc is going to want to come to cleveland so that they can run 5 yard out routes and get mauled 10 times a year when Colt or Seneca leaves them out to dry with James Harrison. Until the QB play improves, WR improvements will come from the draft.
