OT: 21
I am turning 21 tonight (January 7th) at midnight. Obviously everyone knows what that means.
I still live in Cleveland too. This is basically an OT to ask a few questions about beers/local places and stuff like that. Also, the season is over and it feels about time for the first OT of the thread. I always thought the ones where people talked about beer and stuff were interesting.
I have a few questions to start up the conversation.
What are some good bars around Cleveland? This is directed at current/former residents. Basically ones with a nice atmosphere not filled with a bunch of bros trying to mac on the ladies, while avoiding the grenades (if you get this, you watch the Jersey Shore, are a bro, or know a bro). Also, I don't want to go a place where you play 6-7 bucks a beer. Those places do exist I believe in Cleveland. Basically, chill bars/clubs to drink that aren't overpriced.
What are some good suggested beers? I dunno if we ever had an OT Beer thread, but this isn't just that. I do like Great Lakes, but I don't always want to pay 12 bucks a 6 pack. I dunno how many good beers there are at the Yeungling price level (about a dollar a beer).
What are people's favorite brands/types of spirits? Yesterday I noticed that there is a licensed liquor store down the street. YAY! This place isn't in a great neighborhood but they have stuff like Skyy vodka that I know is expensive. I don't want expensive, but best tasting and smoothest (often, they aren't the same).
What are people's favorite mixed drinks? I really want to try an Irish Carbomb this weekend. Dunno if I will. I also don't know a ton honestly about mixed drinks (I know Whiskey Sours are delicious).
Lastly, any wine drinkers out there? I'm just curious.
This is a fan-created post. Dawgs By Nature assumes no responsibility for the content listed.

Slow down kid, you’re gonna hurt yourself. Just kiddin, congrats.
What part of town do you live in?
I’m quite well versed in the local bar scene. As a raging alcoholic and drummer in bar bands for the last 20 yrs., I feel more qualified to talk this subject than Browns football. I’m a lifelong Westsider though, never got a passport to get across the Valley View Bridge. I have snuck over the border and made it back safely a few times though.
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
Ive never even been to Cleveland… I wonder how much different the scene is from Florida, if at all. South Florida I’m sure is way different, very Jersey Shore meets Operation Repo, but I imagine yalls scene is a lot like the central/north Florida scene.
"It is unlikely that anyone has ever read Nietzsche or Derrida and has been inspired to open a soup kitchen"
I’ve been to Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, and Fort Meyers. Can’t really say that any of them are that similar to Cleveland at all. I guess the Tarpon Springs area is not too unlike the suburbs of Cleveland, but really it’s a lot different here altogether.
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
How so? just out of curiosity. I guess orlando is probably more international, less homey, depending on what part of town you were in.
"It is unlikely that anyone has ever read Nietzsche or Derrida and has been inspired to open a soup kitchen"
I think the out of all the time I’ve spent in Orlando I’ve met maybe 3 people that were actually FROM there. Very funny. Its very hard to describe and I don’t want to sound like I’m putting Florida down or something, but everywhere I’ve been there just seem to lack it’s own identity. All the tourism and transplants don’t allow anywhere I’ve been there to have a “feel”. There’s no ethnic diversity or neighborhoods built on long tradition.
I could also be completely full of shit though, since I’ve never really spent a whole lot of time there to get to know it better.
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
I mean, thats pretty fair. Its a newish town. I grew up there, second generation Orlando. But even my friends weren’t from Orlando, much less their parents. We have loads on loads of ethnic diversity though. We just dont have little ethnic enclaves, like “you are now entering the old Irish neighborhood.” But I think you’d be hardpressed to find more Cubans or Puerto Ricans or Mexicans in most parts of the country. We even have a large Russian population, in addition to being in the south we obviously have a lot of whites and blacks. We do have a Little Vietnam, though. Lots of people came to Orlando as refugees after the war.
But yeah, not a ton a ton of tradition. I think we’re developing our own identity now as my generation starts to grow up and more of Orlando is actually FROM Orlando and there is a “This is my home” feel to the place.
"It is unlikely that anyone has ever read Nietzsche or Derrida and has been inspired to open a soup kitchen"
I’ve spent very little time in Cleveland as I’ve grown up and lived in Florida my whole life, specifically in various parts of the Tampa Bay area. I would definitely agree that there are a lot of parts of Florida that seem to lack an identity but there are some that have a great social as well as bar scene like St. Pete, largely because the downtown there actually feels more like one in a northern city, yet it’s still in a great location. Eventually I think more places in Florida are going to become like that but it will take time.

I thought all of Florida’s identity was old or Cuban.

I mean… youre 21… spend a little money! Get something super good.
The only mixed drinks I really drink very often are White Russians (hanging out, relaxing) and Long Island Iced Teas (little more party oriented). I really like a cider called Strongbow too. Beer, I dig Sam Adams Winter Ale, thought it was really good. Harp isn’t bad. Dunno how much they cost off the top of my head, I dont drink too often.
But at the end of the day, I’m of a mind that even a little Natty Lite will get the job done just fine as long as your in the company of good friends.
"It is unlikely that anyone has ever read Nietzsche or Derrida and has been inspired to open a soup kitchen"
Thankfully I didn’t have to spend much. First drink I had was some malubu a friend had. 2nd, my friend bought me a whiskey sour. hot bartender gave me a free rum and coke. Bought a strongbow and paid for that. Then, I got like 3+ shots worth of pinnacle whip cream vodka mixed with orange soda.

What’d you think of the Strongbow? I love em, theyre like the Sprite of beer/ciders.

It’s really good. I went to a gastropub with my dad and I tried a cider called original sin. I thought it was better. Not as tart, but much sweeter. Still, strongbow is great for something you can get at a regular old bar.

When i turned 30, many years ago, My buddies started me out on the night with a “Freddie Fudpucker”, and about two drinks later I don’t remember nothing. All I know is I called in sick to work about 4 hours late (7am – which made a 14 hour drinking session), but know I cannot drink like that, it takes days to recover.

Bross, I highly recommend pacing yourself, sampling things and doing some reading. You only have one liver, and it must die – but enjoy killing it slowly.
Beer – there was on OT thread either just before or during this preseason. Myself, Pwnd and Rufio seem to be some of the most well versed in microbrews. You could spend a lifetime sampling variations of styles – especially in Clevelands beer scene. Go to The Brew Kettle in Strongsville by Pearl and 71. At least 40 beers on tap and you will not even find Great Lakes there. Ask for a Miller or Bud and someone may laugh at you. Get a sampler flight or 3. If you’re closer to Lakewood, check out the Beer Engine.
Vodka – don’t spend a lot of money if you’re going to mix it. Foo foo Vodka is not my thing either. I don’t understand the trend of flavoring vodkas. The mark of a perfect vodka is that it has almost no taste or smell and just a slight burn. Let the women drink Three Olives Cherry.
Bourbon – learn the difference between whiskey and bourbon. Jack Daniels is not Bourbon. Get hammered doing shots of Jack or George Dickel. Sip some Knob Creek or Woodbridge.
Scotch – another learning experience, but expensive. Learn the difference between a blended Scotch and a Single Malt and you’ll just scratch the surface the differences in Scotch.
Tequila – for gods sake NEVER drink El Toro!!!! Tequilla is a lot like bourbon. There’s plenty of low end garbage out there, especially when you’re going to mix it, and the top end stuff doesn’t even taste anything like the Rot-Gut. Personally, when I’m looking to change things up I like the occasional Golden Margerita, on the rocks. With salt and lime. Stay away from the crushed ice ones, if you want a slurpee go to. 7-11.
Rum – I’ve kinda been on a little Rum kick as of late. Nice flavor, and a good price range. The islanders in the carribean insist that rum doesn’t give you a hangover. They must not drink 151.
I with I could tell you about wine, but I haven’t gotten into that……much…….yet.
The important thing is to forget all this tomorrow. Go out and celebrate with the people you love and the best friends you can surround yourself with. Get wrecked and let them take care of you. You’ll have what’s left of the memory to last a lifetime!
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
I infuse my own vodkas. It’s pretty fun to experiment and see what works and what doesn’t.

Never bother to buy any thing higher shelf than Smirnoff. Svedka is usually what I rock. If you’re going to a bar with people to get drunk, order Rolling Rocks. They’re usually cheaper than everything else.

Bross!! Happy Birthday sir!!
First of all, take DaveDawgs advice. You have one liver and you can’t really fix it so pace yourself. Also, when you pace yourself, you’ll usually end the night with all the pretty girls while the idiots around you are puking and passing out.
Now, about beer. Different times call for different beers. On a hot summer day, playing golf with the bros, you’ll want go with a really really cold American beer like Bud Light or Coors Light served in a pounder by a lovely cart girl. The key here is that its easy to drink and extremely cold. Also there is usually a really cute cart involved which you will hit on harmlessly for which you will tip her very well.
Mrs. HD is a big fan of the Stella Artois, as well as the actor who endorses it. I would highly recommend this as a nice afternoon cafe beer. For an evening beer where you would like a nice buzz but keep it under control, Bells Two Hearted ale is fantastic. If you want something a little more zippy, Spaten Optimator will get you going. That’s all I’m going to say about beer because, as you know, there are tons of different styles and really you should try them all. When I drank more beer I’ld usually get stuck on a certain one for casual drinking like MGD or Rolling Rock. I would avoid these unless you’re playing cards all night in which case its all good.
Now, let’s move on to liquor which is my drink of choice. Vodka is always something you should have on hand. It’s like the chicken of liquor and can be consumed any day of the week. You made a nice observation that SKYY is a good quality vodka but really its quite affordable for its quality. I personally think as long as you get something Smirnoff, Svedka or above you’re fine, but if you’re entertaining its OK to get some Grey Goose or Belvedere. Personally I think its a waste of money but at my age, sometimes you just have to play those sorts of games and buy the expensive stuff. At 21, don’t waste your money. Stick to Svedka, mix it with whatever you like. Be creative. In summer, iced tea with some simple syrup is awesome. Try it with a peach flavored vodka for a snapple ice pick. In winter, I prefer to drink it straight or mix it with a splash of dry vermouth and warm up with a nice martini with blue cheese stuffed olives. They may be passe but they’re delicious.
Now Gin is a different story, New Amsterdam is a good cheap gin. Mix with tonic and a squeeze of lime, Also there’s value to Tanqueray and Bombay, but really the difference is subtle. I think in time you’ll enjoy gin, and premium gins at that, but for now, don’t overspend on it. Also I had a bad night on gin and tonics which ruined them for me for a bit but really it is a splendid drink that can be enjoyed year round.
Bourbon and Scotch (ie Whiskey) is where you’re going to get the most out of spending a little more. But don’t be in a rush. Whiskey is for slow evenings and an entire lifetime. Single malt scotches are something I think you will enjoy as you get older as you seem like someone who will appreciate the different flavors you’ll taste based on where the barley and malt is produced. You will really notice the different flavors from speyside to highland. But again, this is something that’s fairly expensive and can wait until later in your life. Don’t be afraid to enjoy a blended whiskey like JW red label and water on a chilly evening. I personally enjoy all bourbons equally, but my sister swears by the high end stuff like Knob Creek. I don’t see it, but I love going to Kentucky, watching the Rolex 3 day event and sipping bourbon for all of them.
I used to enjoy wine a lot more, but recently I’ve avoided it because of allergies. That said, no matter what anyone tells you about wine there are no real rules. There are hundreds of varietals and I spent years as a bartender watching pretentious people order the popular labels and watched the adventurous try as much of the grape as they could. Wine is beautiful because of how different each bottle can be. Don’t be the person who’s stuck to a certain brand because that’s just a waste. Like any other agricultural product, wine is subject to a wide range of flavors. If you want to drink wine, be sure to try as many as you can.
Now I’ve barely scratched the surface here. There are all sorts of brandys, cognacs, grappas, desert wines (a bottle of Dolce from my youth kindles memories of a night spent with a beautiful and amazing waitress) and everything else that humans have figured out how to distill.
Enjoy in moderation and enjoy all that our world has to offer. Don’t get stuck drinking just one thing because there are plenty of spirits to discover.
Happy Birthday again, be safe and remember

Best Mojito ever was at the swim up bar in the Dominacan Republic. Mighta been the atmosphere………or quantity.
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
A lot has been said already. Here’s what I got for you:
1. Get a f*#$&g cab. Never, ever drive drunk. You want to mess with your own life, there are plenty of fun ways to do that. Never ever put anyone else at risk because of what you do.
2. There’s getting drunk and there’s enjoying the taste of a fine adult beverage. If you are just looking to get drunk, don’t spend any sort of money on liquors or wine, drink 40s, and go with any cheap beer that doesn’t taste terrible to you. Drinking a 40 down to the top of the label, then refilling it with orange juice is amazing. And you can sing old school Beastie Boys. Getting older and being out of school and really not that much of a big party kind of guy, I am enjoying fine adult beverages more and more and getting drunk less and less often. I like PBR, Bud light, Guinness and Dos Equis as cheaper beers. Carlo Rossi is a great cheap wine. King Cobra and Steel Reserve (if you are ready for the high alcohol %) are good 40 choices.
3. The Grog Shoppe down in Coventry is a cool bar, and they will have bands playing on some nights. It is all ages when bands play and it’s usually punk/indie/ska/something like that. It will be really loud if there is music going on. Very low chance of bros. If you are looking to avoid bros, don’t go anywhere with dancing. “Clubs” or anywhere with pop music is going to be bros. I used to like Peabody’s, especially for 80s nights but don’t know if it still exists. I am probably not the guy to go to for bar suggestions in Cleveland. There’s also a place on Front St. in Berea that is pretty small and serves a lot of good beers, I think it’s called Mikes. If you are in Columbus ever, I can recommend some places.
4. If you are drinking for taste, Sam Adams is probably the cheapest you’ll want to go. Anything microbrew is worth trying. In Ohio, you’ll probably be able to find Bell’s, which will all be good. I don’t know how much pre-21 tasting you’ve done, but if you know what you like I can make suggestions.
5. Don’t waste your time and money with more expensive stuff until you can distinguish between a wheat beer and an IPA, or between Whiskey and Bourbon and Scotch. Learn the differences, develop your palette, and then discover why people pay so damn much for this stuff.
6. Look for happy hours at first. It’s cheap and could be a great way to try new/good things to see if you like them before committing bigtime money to something “good” only to discover you don’t like that style.
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
1. I would NEVER drink and drive.
2. I am drunk right now, but I like to at least enjoy what I am drinking. won’t drink 40s anymore.
3. I love ghe gros shop. Never drank there (obviously) but it’s fun as hell. Peabodys is fun too.
4. I have tried sam adams and it is nice. I think I had like a blackberry whitbeer
5. I have learned a little big and can tell the differences in the first part, but most whickey taste the same to me. (at least irish whiskey and scotch).
6. Thanks. Bar near where i hang out does have some dollar draft nights i’ll probably check out.

Can’t believe Peabody’s is still in business. If you are feeling brave, check out a bar called Now That’s Class! in Lakewood. Last time I was there it was $3 Mad Dog 20-20s. (i.e. not actually classy).
Try the different Sam Adams seasonals when they come out and get their specialty tallboy-only bottles when you can, really good stuff. I just had one that was partially aged in old Bourbon barrels. It was great.

Kamms has turned into a pretty cool little area. If you want a pretty cool “biker bar” experience without getting beat up, try out Smedly’s. It looks very rough and tumble – but it’s the HQ for The Warthogs Motorcycle Club, which is made up entirely of Cops and Fireman. The Leathernecks MC frequent quite often too. There is almost never any kind of trouble there and some cool bands – but the place feels like “Roadhouse” or something.
Too bad you weren’t around for Flash’s Concert Club in the late 80’s early 90’s. It used to be where the Walgreens is located.
The place had a huge stage with a 110 can light system and a 20,000 watt stereo P.A. system. I think the monitor system was better than most bands entire P.A.’s. My original metal band used to play there and they had touring acts coming through all the time. I actually saw a very young Pantera and Dream Theater there.
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
Now That’s Class is awesome! I have a few friends who live in that area and their various bands will play there every once in a while.

I have a weird feeling (since you and rufio have talked about it), that its kind of a hipster bar…especially with the ironic name :)
I don’t mind hipster bars honestly.

Well it is in Lakewood. It’s a small bar that has free live music sometimes. Pretty cheap, kind of a hole-in-the-wall type of place.
"An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools" -Hemingway
It is hands down the shittiest bar I’ve ever been to. And that’s saying something. I saw Dillinger Four play there and it was sweet.

I’ve only ever seen my friends’ bands play there, I live across the city so I can’t really just go to hang out.

yeah, I was surprised you were talking about places on the west side. It’s far for me and I live closer to the west side.

I’ve heard Mr. E’s is a pretty decent bar. I’m pretty sure I know the owner, and it’s where most of the people from my old neighborhood drink. I myself have never been there though.

Is that place by the indie movie theater where the bands played downstairs closed? It was pretty unique, the bar on ground level but was almost a balcony above the stage, which was one story below. My friends played with Streetlight Manifesto there.

Which movie theater are you talking about? That doesn’t sound familiar to me, but it very well could be open still, and it sounds awesome.

Cedar Lee I think? Bar name maybe involved the color green?
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
Cedar Lee is definitely still there. They also do cult classic films a couple times a month, like Evil Dead or Trainspotting. They’re even playing Terminator later this month.
I haven’t been to any bars up there, but it very well may exist.

Cedar Lee’s on the east side; seems you guys are talking about Lakewood.
You are reading my signature.
No, I was talking about the east side here. That’s where that downstairs bar was.

if you don’t want to show your age, then i assume you’re talking about grog shop, where the downstairs bar is now B-side Liquor Lounge, and there used to be a theater next door, but has gone through a couple changes (from Johnny Malloy’s now to Big Dog Theater, or something like that).
You are reading my signature.
Nope, its not the Grog. Already talked about the Grog. And it used to be down the street where there was no downstairs.
I’m pretty sure this place was on either Cedar or Lee.

It’s Big Dog Theater now and has an improv troupe, something Cleveland has really needed (though they aren’t UCB or SC, or Groundlings). I don’t like the B-Side and have a bias against them ever since I couldn’t go to a poetry reading because it was 21+…And it was for a class too!

I think Peabody’s closed a couple years ago, unfortunately. I love the Grog Shop, I’m even friends with one of the bouncers now. I also like the Wink in Coventry, and a lot of Case kids will go to the patio at Panini’s when it’s warmer out.
"An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools" -Hemingway
Well I’ll be damned, Peabody’s is still in business. I know there was somewhere that closed, but now I don’t know what.
"An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools" -Hemingway
I was about to say, Peabody’s is definitely open. I have a friend who works there sometimes.
Like the grog shop too, but not a big fan of the crowd at Panini’s personally (in general). I like old school dive bars with loud, live bands and smoke in the air.

Check ou The Winchester in Lakewood and The Lamplighter in Parma Hts for little dive bars with live music. For more live music, The Parma Tavern is a decent joint, but the risk of a Jersey Shore type crowd is a definite possibility.
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
Also if you’re looking for something a little more upscale there are a couple nice micro-brew restaurants right next to West Side Market. One is called Market Garden Brewery, can’t remember the name of the other.
"An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools" -Hemingway
Great Lakes is right there, and the Bier Markt / Bar Cento / Speakesy is in the building across from Market Garden.
Check out Happy Dog on 58th and Detroit for a cool old school bar and an off the wall take on Hot dogs.

Smedly’s on the 21st of January!! A benefit going on with several bands – I used to play in a band with the bassist from Nunfist and the guitarist from Kathleen Turner Overdrive – both playing that day. It’s a noon to 8 kind of thing, I plan on attending.
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
I may be out of town then, but I’ll probably check it out if I am in town.

The Pit? And there was a downstairs component too that had a lot of indie bands there I think. Also some place with a pirate ship in it in Lakewood down on Detroit or Madison.
My ex used to work at the Grog.

The Priate ship was in the Phantasy Theater. I don’t know if it’s still open. I played there too.
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
Phantasy! Oh man that’s totally right. What band(s) were you in?
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
I was in a semi-Progressive Metal band called Eternal Youth from about ‘88 – 92. Some little local popularity and moderate label interest from Roadrunner when they were brand new. Was in a cover/original thing after that called Billy and The Escape Goats till ’94. Been strictly covers ever since. Bands since then; Tarp (’95-‘02), Holeshot (’03-‘04) The Hard Rain Band (’04-‘09), The Undercover Band (’09-‘10), and till present, Random. All the cover bands listed have gigged the south west suburbs at least twice a month. As you can tell, I can’t stand to not be in a band!
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
I can tell. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you play. What instrument do you play?

Just a hunch but I think he’s a percussionist.

I like bourbon. I usually drink Maker’s Mark and Coke. Kessler’s is a similar flavor for much cheaper. I don’t drink much beer but I love the smoothness of Molson Canadian when I do. Don’t know much about Cleveland Bars, although I have partied in the Flats after games back in the day. I can tell you that if you’re ever stuck in Erie on game day and it’s not televised, there’s a little bar called the Greengarden tavern. Good folks, good food, cheap prices and 100% Browns. Happy birthday, I hope you feel better.

Happy Birthday.
I’ll throw out the idea to avoid the expensive stuff until your tastes demand it. In my 20’s I was quite content with Jim Beam; now I can’t stand the stuff. I’m in my 40s and pretty soon I’ll be saying the same about Jack Daniels. Fortunately, I’m content with Busch and “easy drinkin’” Busch Light – because money doesn’t grow on trees…
The other recommendation is to take the time to learn about wine – there is nothing worse than sitting down to an important dinner date and being perplexed by the wine list. First, get an understanding of the difference between the different grape varieties; then the difference between growing regions and some of the basic terminology on the tastes/flavors. Finally, get a good $15-$20 “go-to” wine you can feel comfortable bringing to parties and events (Liberty School Cabernet is a pretty safe).

The world tour sounds fun too. I went to Deagan’s which is a place on the west side next to my dad’s work and had a belgian beer and a german beer (and either an american or british stout).

While we are kind of on the subject, if you all are looking for something pricey but REALLY REALLY DELICIOUS, check out the restaurant in the Mariott at W. 150th and I-71. I think it is called AMP 150.
Holy crap is it delicious. But expensive. Homemade potato chips with brewer’s yeast and a Dortmunder dipping sauce. Also, the open-faced bleu cheese wedgeburger. Wow.

bross, i assume you live in my neck of the woods regarding some of the comments. most journeys into craft beer start with imports, into spiced beers(holiday ales, pumpkin ales) and fruit beers (shandys or flavored wheats/hefeweizens), and into your various styles made popular by craft breweries.
If you want to try a couple by the bottle, Warehouse Beverage sells singles at a lower price than you’d pay sitting/tipping at Winking Lizard.
Whole Foods at Cedar/Warrensville has 6 handles for growler fills, but samples are only 25 cents. Feel free to stop there to try some different styles, and if the blond haired guy with glasses and a goatee is working (Joe), he’s always more than happy to talk beer, and well-qualified to.
Heinens on South Green is having a Belgian beer tasting tomorrow for only $10. The beer guy there, Glenn, is also very knowledgeable and willing to talk.

I’ll check out wharehouse beverage.
That is how my craft journey started, with some imported hefeweizen and a fruity IPA
Wish I had been on here earlier and knew about that beer tasting. Actually had a Heinen’s wine last weekend. Falling water Sauvingnon Blanc. Was pretty good and I think it’s like 7 bucks a bottle.
