The Chargers had success running the ball on their first drive, but the Browns' defense came up with a stuff on 4th-and-short. Then, the Browns faced their own 4th-and-short after driving the ball, but converted with a quarterback sneak by Brandon Weeden.
A couple of plays later, Trent Richardson took a handoff up the middle and was helped to the end zone for 26 yards by offensive guard Shawn Lauvao, giving Cleveland a 7-0 lead. The Browns' defense forced another stop and then a fumble to set up the offense with good field position heading into the second quarter.
