With the First Pick in the 2012 Dawgs By Nature Mock Draft, the Indianapolis Colts Select...

Feb 24, 2012; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Stanford Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck speaks at a press conference during the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

With the first round draft order officially confirmed, it's time to begin our second annual Dawgs By Nature Community Mock Draft! Let's get things going with the first team who was on the clock, the Indianapolis Colts. With the first pick in the draft, the Colts select...

Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

This selection and write-up was made by Ryno III:

The Colts have uncertainty at quarterback for the first time since drafting Peyton Manning. They have no idea weather or not Peyton Manning will ever play another down, let alone be as good as he was in the past. So lucky for them they not only have the first pick in the draft, but an opportunity to draft a quarterback that is as close to being a guarantee hit as you can possibly get. Andrew Luck is the best player available and fills a need for maybe as soon as next season. So the Colts are not just drafting the BPA, but also their biggest need. They simply can't leave this draft with the most important position in the sport left in uncertainty.

Next season don't be surprised if the Colts go into it with Andrew Luck as their starting quarterback. Of course if Peyton Manning is healthy and returns with the Colts then he would start, but there is no guarantee of that. He could retire or end up with another team. I think there is a really good chance of Peyton Manning not coming back for the Colts, so you may be seeing Andrew Luck play right away.

Was there really any doubt about Andrew Luck going to the Colts? It has all but been confirmed over the past couple of months, and it really isn't a bad idea given Peyton Manning's age, neck issues, and the fact that Jim Irsay has already gutted the organization in preparation of going into re-building mode. The thing that Irsay hopes is that Luck is the type of quarterback who negates the need for a team to "rebuild" because of how good of a player he is projected to be.

The St. Louis Rams are on the clock next (email has been sent to SpecialBrownie).

That’s quite an expression Luck has on his face. Probably the same one as when he heard Griffin stole his Heisman.

Did nobody else notice the copy-paste error?

I didn’t think we’d be seeing a quarterback go first overall after Andrew Luck’s announcement, but the pick still makes sense because the Panthers were atrocious at the quarterback position last year. I don’t think the team should waste any time trying to develop Jimmy Clausen. Unfortunately for Carolina, it will be difficult to see if a guy like Carson Palmer will be available to them once the lockout begins. They need a quarterback who do well in a division that already has the explosive Drew Brees and the talented youngsters Matt Ryan and Josh Freeman, and Newton could be that guy.

I don’t really care. It was more a heads up for the future articles in the mock.
