With the second pick in the 2012 Dawgs By Nature Community Mock Draft, the St. Louis Rams select...
Matt Kalil, LT, USC
This selection and write-up was made by SpecialBrownie:
This one should be a no brainer. As JT connoisseurs, we all know how important LT is. Matt Kalil is the best LT prospect since God himself set foot in Cleveland. After Bradford was absolutely killed last year (St. Louis was #1 in sacks allowed at 55), their pick should be invested in LT; the most important position right behind QB.
The Rams already have their QB, so the next logical step is LT. Blackmon would be nice here but how is Bradford going to do anything with him if he never has time to throw? Maybe Claiborne here for a CB corps that was decimated by injury, but that's a huge reach and putting far too much value into that position.
Kalil would anchor the left side of a line that started to see chemistry toward the end of last season. Kalil's near JT - like skills at pass - blocking, combined with their successful zone run - blocking (if they still continue to employ that), would show immediate improvement in their offense.
This is a good spot for the Rams to gain some value, if they so choose to, if teams want to acquire Robert Griffin III. Trades are not allowed in this mock draft, but in this case, that is far from a bad thing for the Rams. Sam Bradford has been in the league for two years already, and while the organization is fully committed to him, he hasn't had the tools around him to shine. Getting a top-notch left tackle in Matt Kalil will help, and chances are, the Rams won't continue being in the cellar much longer -- this is there one chance to get a franchise left tackle, and they should take advantage of it.
The Minnesota Vikings are on the clock next (email has been sent to pt_999).
