I really appreciated the if the Browns made the Superbowl in 2014 post from a couple weeks back (thanks DaveDog). So I thought I'd flip the switch and crank up the flux capacitor to 88mph in the other direction.
My first interest in the Browns came as one of my earliest memories and must have been around 4-5 yrs. old. At the time, I could probably only name one or two football teams, and the only way I knew them was the symbols on the sides of the helmet. My dad took me to my uncle's house who was watching a football game and I distinctly remember thinking, what's up with these guys with the funny orange helmets, there's nothing on them? For some reason I thought that was pretty cool, like they didn't "need" anything on their helmets.
What drove it home though was the rebuke my older brother gave me (almost 7 years older) when I asked him who they were and that I liked them. He, and most of my extended family, are Steelers fans and after he listed various reasons why it would be stupid to like the Browns I became all the more convinced. Something that could piss off my brother that much was definitely worth doing! This was ca. 1982-83.
That's when I became a Browns fan. However, what made it more than just a favorite team was Bernie Kosar. Beyond the fact that he came out of Boardman, where my stepdad went to school, hearing about a guy coming out of college who would have nothing to do with any team other than his hometown Browns just convinced me this team is cut from a different mold than any other. For that reason, Bernie will always be my favorite player, any and every team I'm on from my basketball teams to my paintball team, my number is always 19.
So how did you become a Browns fan? I know that for many of us, donning the orange and brown was pre-ordained upon conception, but even still, perhaps there was a moment early on where you finally figured out what your dad or mom and everyone else was just so crazy about. So let's hear it!
There's probably a fanpost on this topic already, I went back several pages and didn't see one, so maybe it's time to blow the dust off and let some of the newbies like myself chime in.
And yes, we should still draft RG3 ;)
