With the 19th pick in the 2012 Dawgs By Nature Community Mock Draft, the Chicago Bears select...
Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
This selection and write-up was made by OrangeAndBrownFever:
This pick became a lot more difficult once the Bears traded for Brandon Marshall. Before that trade a WR was a shoe in for this selection. This is now a three man race. This pick was between Martin, C. Glenn (Georgia), and C. Jones (Syracuse). The OL for the Bears has been a weakness in the past and defiantly needs an upgrade anywhere on the line. Jones here could give them a huge upgrade on the DL and benefit greatly from the double teams that Peppers would be receiving.
Martin here gives them the ability to finally secure that LT position which they have been plugging and playing players in the past. The Bears do like Webb, but adding a guy like Martin could let them move Webb around to one of the other positions on the line. The Bears already have weapons on offense in the QB, 2 RBs, and a WR. The last piece of their puzzle on the offensive side of the ball is the OL and Martin will fill that need.
Martin will have a few growing pains throughout his first professional season. He is a natural athlete and is quick on his feet. His downfall is his overall strength in his blocking and may get thrown around a little in year 1. With an offseason and time to work with NFL caliber strength coaches he will be able to "come into form" toward the end of the season and year 2.
The Bears have already made a lot of awesome acquisitions this offseason, but the one thing that still needs to be addressed is the offensive line. If the Bears pick anything but an offensive lineman with the 19th overall pick, I will be stunned (unless a truly better player fell right in their lap). Martin is the best offensive tackle available here, and the only thing I'd be disappointed with is the fact that he didn't fall to the Browns.
The Chicago Bears are on the clock next (email will be sent to OrangeAndBrownFever).
