Russell Wilson on the Gruden QB Camp

7

Regarding the main knock on Wilson being his height: There was a coach who was moderately successful with quarterbacks by the name of Bill Walsh. Once upon a time, he arranged for a workout at Brigham Young University in the off-season to conduct a "non-official" (a creative way to get around the leagues off-season workout rules at the time) scouting workout on a Tampa Bay Buccaneer by the name of Steve Young. In his book, "Building A Champion", Walsh stated how he was "surprised" at Young's height, noting he was "shorter than he expected." At that time (and all throughout his career), Young was listed at 6'2". However, look at almost any photo of him next to Jerry Rice (a true/solid 6'2") and you'll see that Young is a smidge shorter than Rice; they are not eye-to-eye. Same thing when you see him post-game talking to Brett Favre (another 6'2" QB). My point here is that there have been QB's of similar build and a similar level of athleticism to Wilson who have done very well. I have yet to see a bad report on this guy as a QB and the majority of the criticism is regarding the limitations of his height. For once and for all, while obviously not ideal, this is not such a detriment as to consider him not draftable. For me, I'm a lot more comfortable with a 4th-round pick on a guy like Wilson that a #4 overall pick on a guy like Tannehill.
