This is not a post to bash Weeden or to say that he will never be a good/great QB. While I didn’t like the pick in the first round, at times I see the potential he has, and I’m damned sure rooting for him. Time will tell if it was a good pick. And I’m not concerned about typical 1st year QB missteps: staring-down receivers, misjudging the closing speed of DBs/LBs, holding the ball too long, etc. Those things are to be expected. But what is very concerning to me is that at times he seems mystifyingly situationally-unaware. Three examples:
ONE: Scrambling with one second left in the first half of the Philly game rather than throwing the ball into the end-zone or at least downfield. Very few college QBs with any starting experience would make a mistake like that.
TWO: The two dump-off passes in the middle of the field today during the last drive (last one picked). Down two scores and with no timeouts, it’s stunning to see a starting QB in the NFL dumping the ball over the middle and, at best, trading 25 seconds of clock for a nominal gain. Inexplicable other than simply not being prepared and/or being situationally-unaware.
THREE: His post-game comments today that he thought he had a "solid day" a "good day": Barely over 60% completions, one TD and two 4th quarter picks, and you lose at home by 10 points. How unaware does a guy have to be to not recognize how tone-deaf comments like that are?
I’m concerned.
