The franchise of Motley, Brown, Kelly, Pruitt, Pruitt, Byner & Mack absolutely refuses to commit to running the damn ball.
Against the worst run defense in the league they ran the ball with some success 14 times!!!! The fourth quarter melt downs have a lot to do with a failure to use the clock, rest the defense and keep the ball. Since 1989 (Trestman as OC) if the Browns run the ball for less than 3 yards....we don't run the ball again that quarter (not quite that bad). The Jax and NE defenses were also poor against the run...but, we don't even try.
I liked the looks of Rainey but, no chances and now he is doing something for TB. I like the looks of Baker. McGahee is finished and should be sent home. Whitaker has little value running the ball. Obie seems to do fine but, only gets 3 or 4 chances a game. Benjamin and Gordon and Little can do end arounds. The wildcat worked well for two plays this week...then never used again.
I've been encouraged with the better talent but, if I can't have faith in the offensive philosophy? I know that we need better backs. I'd live with the current stable of QBs if we could get some RB and OL improvement. What is the sense if the coaches feel it isn't manly to run the ball, control the clock and win games?
Finally the DNA of the franchise is running the ball and playing good defense. Since Graham our successful QBs have been named Ryan, Nelson, Sipe and Kosar. Bernie was the only one with a pedigree and he played successful ugly.
It is time to quit dreaming and focus on learning how to win. We have everything we need except the will to control the game. Run the damn ball, draft players to run the damn ball, sign OL with the desire to exert their will on the DL and get a game manager QB to hand off, throw to Gordon & Cameron and learn how to enjoy winning again.
