Site News: Editable and Collapsible Comments Are Coming

Some of you have been asking about editable comments for years. Over the past few months, I have been hinting that the implementation of editable comments was getting closer and closer. I can now reveal that the editable comments feature is scheduled to go into production late next week, perhaps on Thursday, April 18th.

I have tested the functionality on a private testing site on SB Nation, and it works well and is simple to understand. Here is how it works:

  • After you post a test comment, an "edit" button appears near the "rec" and "flag" links on your comment.
  • You have 90 seconds to edit your comment. To indicate this, at the bottom of the comment you posted, there is a small and non-obtrusive "progress bar" and a small countdown number indicating how much time you have left.
  • Your editing must be completed within those 90 seconds. If you click the button one minute after your post, you need to make your edit and hit post again within the next 30 seconds, for example.

This should help people greatly with small typos or bizarre formatting that took place in your comment.

Another nice new feature that will be released is "collapsible comments." This allows you to collapse an entire sub-thread within a comments section. For example, let's say the Daily Dawg Chow consists of 300 comments, but there is a 100 comment chain in the middle of it that deviates to a topic that you could care less about. To save yourself the scrolling, just collapse the top comment and you can save yourself a lot of scrolling time. A subject line is not needed to collapse a chain of comments; just clicking on the area where a subject line would normally be will get the job done.

Are you looking forward to these features?
