The Cleveland Browns started out this off-season on fire. They were able to target the guy they wanted in free agency and go get him. They also were able to bring in another starter and a good player at LB. One could say that they significantly improved their front seven. They have some more athletes and they are deep on the defensive line which is going to help them make the transition to a 3-4. zits something I worried about when I first found out but something that I don't worry about anymore.
The question is why am I not worried anymore? Is it because the browns were able to improve the front seven so much that the transition shouldn't be a problem or is it because they have left such gaping holes on the rest of there roster unsolved. The browns had a great opportunity to make a difference during free agency and improve this team. They didn't do it.
The browns need a starting CB to play opposite Joe Haden. Perfect, this years free agency class is full of starting corners that need a new home. So we wait and we wait and we sign none of them. Unbelievable nonsense to have a chance to spend some money on a position that is loaded with players and not do it. So you say Dee Milliner is the answer...That's fine, but why not get one anyways. What if Milliner is not there? What if someone gets hurt? What do we do then? Who starts at Free Safety? What if they get hurt? What do we do then? Who starts at Tight End? Cameron Jordan you say? I say "not good enough". Who starts at FB? Owen Marejcic, "I say not good enough".
The browns went all the way through free agency so far and did not get a veteran wide receiver. They did not get a starting corner. That did not get a starting free safety. They didn't get O-line help. They did not get a starting tight end. These areas can not be addressed with six picks in a draft. My point is that, the browns roster has improved and we have a good young core of play-makers and I feel like we could move in the right direction. But, in order to do so the front office has to take the steps to fill that roster with real NFL starters or else we will be 5-11 again with a good young care again. You have to be able to fill a whole 56 man roster with players that belong there. You can't get cheap now and fill the rest of this roster with rookies and unsigned FA's. The NFL exposes every team for what it is over the entire season. Someone please tell Joe Banner before its too late, there is gonna be no where hide these weaknesses. You can't cover up the shortcomings on a NFL roster. They become glaring at some point.
