Analyzing the Snap Counts in Lions vs. Browns (Defense)

Ron Schwane-USA TODAY Sports

Looking at the defensive snap counts in the Browns' 24-6 win over the Lions.

We already looked at the offensive snap counts for the Cleveland Browns against the Detroit Lions. Now, it's time to turn our attention to the defensive snap counts.

Defensive Line

Pos Player Plays % Stats
DL Ahtyba Rubin 22 37% 0 tackles, 1 assist (1 combined).
DL Billy Winn 21 35% 1 tackle (1 combined).
DL Desmond Bryant 20 33% 1 tackle (1 combined).
DL Brian Sanford 17 28% 1 tackle (1 combined).
DL Phil Taylor 16 27% 0 tackles, 1 assist (1 combined). 1 pass defended.
DL John Hughes 15 25% No stats registered.
DL Armonty Bryant 12 20% 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 sack, 1 quarterback hit, 1 tackle for loss.
DL Ishmaa'ily Kitchen 9 15% 0 tackles, 1 assist (1 combined).
DL Nick Jean-Baptiste 3 5% No stats registered.
DL Dave Kruger 3 5% 1 tackle (1 combined).

Last week, the starting defensive linemen saw 6 or fewer snaps. The big increase in reps went to Rubin, who only saw 4 snaps a week ago. Hall Davis, who led this group in snaps a week ago, did not play with an injury. While some of the backups' reps dropped this week, Sanford remained near the top. He remains a candidate to be retained. Bryant notched the Browns' only sack of the night late in the game.

Outside Linebacker

Pos Player Plays % Stats
OLB Justin Cole 28 47% 1 tackle (1 combined).
OLB Paul Kruger 26 43% 0 tackles. 1 quarterback hit, 1 pass defended.
OLB Jabaal Sheard 24 40% 1 tackle, 2 assists (3 combined). 1 tackle for loss.
OLB Quentin Groves 24 40% 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined).
OLB Kendrick Adams 18 30% 0 tackles, 1 assist (1 combined).

The Browns' depth chart had Cole moving to outside linebacker this week, but I'll have to go back and watch the tape to see if that's true or not. Mingo never got a chance to play on defense, according to the stat sheet -- he had 8 special teams plays before leaving with a bruised lung (I cringe typing that, ugh!). Sheard and Kruger were very impressive early on.

Inside Linebacker

Pos Player Plays % Stats
ILB Craig Robertson 26 43% 1 tackle, 3 assists (4 combined). 1 pass defended.
ILB D'Qwell Jackson 26 43% 3 tackles, 2 assists (5 combined).
ILB L.J. Fort 19 32% 5 tackles, 1 assist (6 combined).
ILB James-Michael Johnson 16 27% 0 tackles, 1 assist (1 combined).
ILB Justin Staples 12 20% No stats registered.
ILB Tommy Smith 12 20% 0 tackles, 1 assist (1 combined).
ILB Tank Carder 9 15% No stats registered.

26 snaps is the magic number this week, because that's how many reps the starters who play 100% of their snaps saw. That included Robertson, Jackson, Gipson, Haden, and Owens. Fort seems to be entrenched as Jackson's backup still. In an interesting twist, Johnson saw more reps than Carder. Staples and Smith didn't really get enough snaps to make an impact.

Safety

Pos Player Plays % Stats
S Josh Aubrey 41 68% 3 tackles, 1 assist (4 combined).
S Johnson Bademosi 29 48% 1 tackle, 2 assists (3 combined).
S Tashaun Gipson 26 43% 2 tackles, 1 assist (3 combined). 1 tackle for loss.
S Kenronte Walker 12 20% No stats registered.
S Kent Richardson 12 20% 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 tackle for loss.

Upon initial viewing, Gipson looked very good as the starting free safety. The coaching staff is getting a lot of film on Aubrey while Ward and Slaughter remain sidelined.

Cornerback

Pos Player Plays % Stats
CB Akeem Auguste 31 52% 2 tackles, 1 assist (3 combined). 1 pass defended.
CB Abdul Kanneh 27 45% 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). 1 pass defended.
CB Joe Haden 26 43% 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 pass defended.
CB Chris Owens 26 43% 2 tackles, 1 assist (3 combined).
CB Trevin Wade 22 37% 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). 1 pass defended.
CB Buster Skrine 21 35% 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined).
CB Vernon Kearney 9 15% 1 tackle (1 combined).

The stats would indicate that Owens got the start and played on the outside, with Skrine playing the slot. Pretty much all of the cornerbacks had pretty solid days against the Lions, even the backups. Auguste continues to see more reps than any other corner, along with Kanneh. Those two will battle it out for a practice squad spot, while Kearney will be left hoping to find a spot elsewhere. I still like Wade's play. Leon McFadden will throw a wrench into things when he comes back.
