Chiefs Claim Former Browns LB James-Michael Johnson

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

It was a rather perplexing turn of events this offseason for former Cleveland Browns linebacker James-Michael Johnson. A fourth-round pick in 2012, Johnson played in 10 games, starting 8 of them, and registered 36 combined tackles on the season. He didn't look great, but he didn't look like some guy who would be ousted from the roster less than a year later.

When the Browns switched to the 3-4 defense and brought in a complete overhaul of new coaches, though, Johnson just...wasn't a fit for the system, it seemed. It's not necessarily a dig at Johnson -- remember, one of the first things this coaching staff did was release Frostee Rucker, who was signed to a lucrative deal in 2012. Rucker was one of the Browns' better defenders last year, but they just didn't feel he was a fit for the 3-4 defense.

With all of that in mind, it's not a surprise to learn that Johnson was the first of the Browns' cuts to find a new home, as he was claimed off waivers by the Kasnas City Chiefs:

Johnson's career in Cleveland at least ended with somewhat of a bang, as he had a pick six in the final preseason game against the Bears. We wish Johnson the best; it had to be rough for him to go from first-string as a rookie to third-string as a sophomore, without really having done anything wrong.
