Ray Horton & Norv Turner Depart the Cleveland Browns

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

The assistant coaching staff continues to thin, this time including both coordinators.

As expected, the Cleveland Browns saw both of their coordinators depart for other teams on Saturday. The front office originally said that the new head coach would make a decision on the assistant coaches, but since a coach has not been hired yet, the assistants have had time to find work elsewhere.

Ray Horton will join new Tennessee Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt. Horton served as Whisenhunt's defensive coordinator in Arizona for two years before he joined the Browns last season. Horton's defense was a mixed bag all year. For most of the year, the team's were surprisingly stout against the run. However, the late-season collapse against the run actually made their run defense ranking very comparable to the previous year under Dick Jauron's 4-3 system.

The biggest knock on Horton was the Browns' third-down defense and red zone defense, both of which ranked in the bottom three in the NFL. By the end of the year, the Browns' defense actually gave up less points in 2012 than they did in 2013. Ouch.

Norv Turner will join new Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer, who got to go up against Turner's offense twice this past season when he was the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. Since Turner was in the booth all year and Rob Chudzinski was also an "offensive guy," it's hard to say exactly what kind of impact Turner had on the offense. Nonetheless, his long-standing resume pretty much speaks for itself, and he'll have this to look forward to:

These days, Turner is pretty much a "package deal" with his son, which is why Scott Turner is expected to be named the Vikings' new quarterbacks coach soon.
