NFL Combine 2014: Doug Marrone Talks About Browns' HC Mike Pettine, and How His Defense Will Change

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Pettine served on Doug Marrone's staff with the Bills in 2013.

Last year, Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine was the defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills. At the NFL Combine on Thursday, Bills head coach Doug Marrone was asked about Pettine, as well as how the defense might suffer in the transition to a new defensive coordinator (Jim Schwartz):

(Thoughts on Mike Pettine and how his demeanor was): "Obviously as an organization we’re very happy what Mike did for us in a short time in Buffalo. Mike is very knowledgeable, very smart, has a great work ethic and we wish him the best of luck. I just respect him. I don’t look to label him with names or anything. I just think he’s a very hard worker, demanding, knows exactly what he wants and does a good job communicating that with the players."

(On how much defense will change from Pettine to Schwartz): "Some things we have to do is stop the run better, which we didn't do a good job of last year. We all know that. Touchdown passes, we gave up quite a few. Some of the third-and-long situations ... There was going to be change in those areas. So I think there will be change. We're smart. We're looking to carry over some of the same language for our players. Again, we don't want to totally trash one thing and come another. We're trying to make sure we can continue to move forward and get better in all areas and make sure it's the easiest transition for our players."
