3 Quick Combine Perceptions that Impact Browns

  1. Blake Bortles establishes himself as the lone "prototypical" NFL QB. He is tall - he is strong - he has the arm strength, he is physical tool stud of this class. I am not that high on Bortles, because in the small sample size of games that I have observed, he was inaccurate and had a couple of BWWTF throws. But no mistake, if the Browns trade up - I think it will be Bortles that will be the target. It would not be hard to convince Jimmy Haslam to trade for a QB that most resembles Ben.
  2. JFF brings up more questions than answers. This is just a guess, but I am thinking that Manziel had just a horrible combine. First, he doesn't measure 6 feet, but that was not the story of the day. I think the thing that will hurt is the 4.62 40 time. Now not all times are critical, but I just have to think that a few teams may wonder if JFF magic behind the line of scrimmage may be affected by significantly faster DEs or OLBs. For example, Mingo ran a 4.53 40. Now the truth may be that the key to JFF magic is quickness and not speed, a perhaps the time means absolutely nothing, but I am guessing a couple FO sphincters will tighten when they see the height + some issues + somewhat pedestrian 40 time.
  3. Sammy Watkins becomes intriguing choice at number 4. Now the only way that I thought Watkins could come into play was if Bortles, JFF, and TB to go 1-2-3. Now I am questioning that. Lets say TB and BB are gone - but JFF and Watkins are both there when we are on the clock. Maybe, the Browns roll the dice and feel that Watkins + Gordon does indeed = nightmare for opposing defenses. They put off the QB to the second choice and hope for a "Rodgerslike" falling JFF or Carr. Now I know that I am higher on Hoyer than most, if not all on DBN, but I do think it is possible that those WRs, and the fact that Hoyer gets rid of the ball quickly, could be an incredible offense for the Browns. I just do not see how opposing defenses could succeed if either JG or SW is single covered. Additionally, if you commit a ton of resources to the outside, good luck with Cameron with an LB. Could truly be a pick your poison scenario.
