Nothing Linking DeSean Jackson to the Browns...Yet

When the Philadelphia Eagles released WR DeSean Jackson last week, we asked the question, "Should the Browns consider signing him?" The fan response was an overwhelming "no" for the most part -- not because Jackson's not talented, but because they don't want to deal with all of the baggage and negative press he comes with.

Up until this point, the Cleveland Browns have not been one of the teams linked to Jackson. With that in mind, though, it can't be ruled out just yet, as ESPN's Ed Werder says that there are two mystery teams that are in deep negotiations with Jackson:

Decision for DL Alex Carrington Coming Soon

As we mentioned a couple of days ago, the Cleveland Browns had DL Alex Carrington in for a visit. The fact that he didn't sign doesn't mean that he won't sign. According to Ryan Talbot of Bills Mafia, Carrington wrapped up his final visit, so a decision should be coming soon:

Steelers Sign WR Lance Moore; A Look at FA WR's

I still thought there was a chance that the Cleveland Browns might surprise me and sign veteran WR Lance Moore to a deal, but it wasn't meant to be. Worse yet, he ended up signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a two-year deal. He was washed up anyway. The Steelers needed some more depth at wide receiver after losing WR Emmanuel Sanders to the Denver Broncos and WR Jerrico Cotchery to the Carolina Panthers. Moore could serve as the team's second- or third-receiver in 2014.

There aren't many other free agent receivers out there for the Browns to look at, but they already have Josh Gordon, Andrew Hawkins, Travis Benjamin, and Greg Little. One person who might get a look down the road is Josh Morgan or Kevin Walter, two veteran receivers who have played under offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. The biggest risk-reward free agent out there is Kenny Britt, who could have at least six teams vying for his services.

Chiefs Sign Former Browns CB Chris Owens

The Cleveland Browns haven't had much luck with their recent nickel cornerbacks, as they released CB Dimitri Patterson and CB Chris Owens in back-to-back years, about three quarters of the way through the season. The Dolphins were the team that signed Patterson and Owens both times when they were released.

Owens was a free agent this year, though, and he just signed a 1-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Owens was best known for being used on the corner blitz by former defensive coordinator Ray Horton. Owens racked up three sacks during the season. Unfortunately, he was a bit of a letdown in coverage after what looked to be a strong training camp.

You can see the Chiefs fans' reaction to signing Owens over at Arrowhead Pride.

Jairus Byrd Reportedly Seeking $9 Million/Year

Assuming the Cleveland Browns aren't able to bring SS T.J. Ward back, I named Buffalo Bills free agent safety Jairus Byrd as my top coveted free agent. My personal projection was that he would receive something along the lines of a 5-year deal worth $42.5 million, with $21.25 million in guaranteed money.

According to several people this morning, including Peter King of SI and James Walker of ESPN, Byrd is seeking a long-term deal averaging $9 million per year.

That would mean Byrd is looking for a 5-year deal worth $45 million, or a 6-year deal worth $54 million. Players don't always get what they seek, though, so we'll see if my projection of $8.5 million stands, and if a team like the Browns is indeed willing to stake a lot of their cap space in a safety.

More Notes on Alex Mack and the Transition Tag

On Monday, the Cleveland Browns put the transition tag on C Alex Mack. We covered a few of the details of what that meant here, but here are a few more notes to be aware of:

  • Starting March 11 at 4:00 PM, Mack can negotiate with other clubs if he so chooses to. If Mack signs an offer sheet with another team, though, he better have the mindset of, "I'm prepared to return to the Browns for the next five-six years," because chances are, Cleveland will match the offer. Mack can't sign an offer sheet from another team and then say, "oh, never mind, I'll just stick with the one-year tag" once Cleveland decides to match the offer.

  • At any point, Mack can sign his transition tag, which would guarantee his one-year salary and also prevent him from negotiating with other teams until 2015.

  • After July 22 and until 4:00 PM on the Tuesday following the 10th week of the season (November 11), the Browns would have exclusive negotiating rights to Mack, meaning they can work out a long-term deal.

Projecting Cap Impact if Mack & Ward Are Re-Signed

Earlier today, we took a quick guess of how much it might cost the Cleveland Browns to sign both C Alex Mack or SS T.J. Ward if they do not use the franchise tag on either player. Our projections in a successful scenario are listed below:

If this happens, you have to ask yourself, "how does Ray Farmer like to structure contracts compared to Joe Banner?" Looking at the cases of OLB Paul Kruger and DE Desmond Bryant, Banner seemed to prefer lessening the signing bonus amounts for each of them (to pro-rate small amounts over the life of the contract), while giving a small first-year base salary but a large first-year guaranteed roster bonus. Since Sashi Brown is still the General Counsel of the Browns and specializes in contracts, he might negotiate terms in a similar manner. For the purposes of this post, we'll stick with that philosophy.

My projection would be that Mack's signing bonus would be $6 million, or $1 million per year. I would also expect a roster bonus of around $5 million in 2014, with the rest of the guarantees coming via his base salaries in 2014 and 2015. My scenario would have $2 million of that base salary being in 2014. Combined, the cap hit in 2014 would be $8 million for Mack.

My projection for Ward would be almost identical, except taking a little bit less from each figure. His cap hit in 2014 would be figured closer to $7.5 million.

If you combine both of those estimates ($15.5 million) and subtract them from the amount of available cap space the team has ($57.45 million), the Browns would still have a massive $41.95 million in available cap space. In other words, as long as Mack/Ward are not hell-bent on leaving Cleveland, there's really no excuse for the team not being able to retain either player.

Will Anyone in AFC North Use the Franchise Tag?

While the Cleveland Browns still have a decision to make on whether they will use the franchise tag on either C Alex Mack or SS T.J. Ward, are there any other teams in the AFC North who could be looking to use the tag? Let's take a quick look:

  • Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals have used the tag the past two years, but they are not expected to use it in 2014. Using it on DE Michael Johnson again would be pricey, taking up half of the team's available cap space, and they are hoping to sign him to a long-term deal. There is a chance they use it on OT Anthony Collins, but again, due to the team's limited cap space, they are trying to stay away from the tag this year and go for long-term deals. VERDICT: Unlikely.

  • Baltimore Ravens: The heavy rumors right now is that if they cannot reach a new deal with TE Dennis Pitta, the Ravens will slap the franchise tag on him. If that happens, Pitta might file a grievance, wishing to be tagged as a wide receiver instead due to how often he lines up in the slot. VERDICT: Possible.

  • Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers have not used the franchise tag for several years, and it's unlikely that they will do so this year. They are in the hole in terms of cap space, so they need to clear room. If they did some drastic cuts, they could try to use the tag on someone like ILB Jason Worilds. VERDICT: Doubtful.

The deadline for teams to make a decision on the franchise tag is March 3.

Not Much Difference in Franchise Tag Numbers

Earlier today, Joel Corry of CBS Sports posted another article about the franchise tag, going through all 32 teams and projecting who each team might be interested in using it on. The price of the franchise tag can fluctuate, depending on what the league salary cap is for the 2014 season, something we won't know for another couple of weeks. Corry says the expectation is that the cap will be somewhere between $126.3 million and $128 million. With those ranges in mind, these would be the tag numbers for either C Alex Mack or SS T.J. Ward:

2014 Salary Cap Projections
Player $126.3 million cap $128 million cap
C Alex Mack $11,109,000 $11,258,000
SS T.J. Ward $8,008,000 $8,116,000

As you can see, we're talking about differences that won't make or break any NFL team, if they decide to use the franchise tag. Cleveland is certainly one of those teams with enough cap space to use the tag.

This Ranking Can't be Good for WR Greg Little

Soon, we will deliberate whether or not the Cleveland Browns should cut WR Greg Little this offseason, despite his low cap figure. One thing is for certain, though: the prospects of his future in Cleveland aren't looking very good. The dropped passes returned last season, and he failed to take the next step forward in his career. Then, after Rob Chudzinski was fired, there were rumors that one of the things that did him in was not cutting a player like Little.

The latest blemish on Little's resume? The ranking that ClevelandBrowns.com Senior Editor Vic Carucci gave him when ranking the 53 players on the Browns roster. Little was ranked at 53/53 on the list -- dead last -- which was even behind fellow wide receiver Davone Bess, who had an even worse year in 2013.

Yes, Carucci does not speak for the Browns' front office, but it's also been believed that because he works for the organization that he might have some insight regarding how a certain player is perceived. You have to think that Little is behind the likes of QB Brandon Weeden, DL Brian Sanford, S Jordan Poyer, WR Josh Cooper, LB Eric Martin, WR Brian Tyms, TE Andre Smith, OL Oniel Cousins, and LB Darius Eubanks, guys who basically received no playing time last year. Other semi-regular players who are ranked low on the list include LB Craig Robertson (38/53) and RB Willis McGahee (51/53).
