Cleveland Browns Release QB Jason Campbell

Justin K. Aller

The Browns are clearing out their backup quarterbacks.

Shortly after releasing QB Brandon Weeden, the Cleveland Browns announced that they have also parted ways with QB Jason Campbell. General manager Ray Farmer released the following statement after the team cut Campbell:

"We appreciate Jason’s contributions to the Browns in 2013. He’s a respected veteran player in this league. We felt like at this time, early in the free-agency period, we would give him a better opportunity to move forward. We wish Jason the best in his future endeavors."

Campbell was due a $250,000 roster bonus on March 15, so his release was expected. The Browns have now released three of our five speculated cap casualties this offseason. Taking Campbell's $3.25 million salary off the books, it offsets the cap space the Browns lost by cutting Weeden. Overall, the net change of cutting Weeden and Campbell? The Browns save $1.25 million.

Campbell had a revival this past season for about two games, but then tanked to become the player we all felt he was. There was no need to have him around next season at the rate we were paying him.
