With the 18th pick in the 2014 Dawgs By Nature Community Mock Draft, the New York Jets select...
Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
This selection and write-up was made by OldSaltyDawg:
We really need people on the offense to catch the ball, though my defensive backfield really needs to be upgraded too. Both positions are deep and I’m trying to decide on an immediate need impact player.
So far only one WR has been taken & the remaining WR’s that fight my needs are Odell Beckham, Allen Robinson, Marqise Lee, Kelvin Benjamin, Mike Evans, Davante Adams & Donte Moncrief. Not a Bad group at all to be looking at, and I feel with his size and skill that Mike Evans is the best WR at this pick.
Though my head coach is a defensive minded guy and I tried to help him out last year taking Dee Milliner, which didn’t turn out bad near the end of the season, but not the immediate impact I was looking for. This years DB’s that are left - Bradley Roby, Kyle Fuller, Jason Verrett, Bashaud Breeland & Stanley Jean-Baptiste are more talented than last seasons and I have a big need, Milliner is the best cornerback on the team. Do I choose defense and grab one of those talented WR’s in the second?
I choose WR Mike Evans – Texas A&M
Outstanding size and length. Functionally strong to power through the jam. Boxes out defenders and is a big red-zone target. Hardwood background is evident -- outstanding leaper with "above-the-rim" skills to go over top of smaller DBs and highpoint throws. Creates late, subtle separation. Tracks and adjusts. Makes contested grabs -- attacks throws and outmuscles defenders in a crowd. Nearly unstoppable executing back-shoulder catches. Strong, reliable hands. Very strong after the catch -- slams into tacklers, is a load to bring down and leans for extra yardage. Productive playmaker -- averaged 20 yards per catch in 2013 and showed up in big games (18-566-5 vs. Alabama and Auburn). Good blocker. Physically dominant and tough. Will be a 21-year-old rookie.
Evans is a very good sized wide receiver that can win a jump ball if needed, and has a talent for getting his QB out of trouble. To me he’s a mixture of Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, which is more than I could ask for, an strong impact player, immediately helping out my young or older QB. He’s young enough to be around for a long time and has shown that he is very coachable. This kid is going to be good enough to make Decker the #2 receiver, if not this upcoming season, then the next.
If I got to make a second round pick, I’d go best CB available.
For a second there, I was fantasizing that Evans would fall nine more picks to the Browns, pairing Manziel with Evans in Cleveland. I have no problem with the Jets going wide receiver here. They need a playmaker like Evans to rejuvenate their offense. I haven't seen Evans fall this far in most other mocks, but I imagine that Jets fans would be thrilled to have him.
The Miami Dolphins are up next, led by Brocolis154033.
