2014 DBN Mock Draft: Kansas City Chiefs Select CB Odell Beckham at No. 23

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

With the 23rd pick in the 2014 Dawgs By Nature Community Mock Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select...

Odell Beckham Jr, WR, LSU

This selection and write-up was made by Legoman0721:

The Chiefs were a title contender throughout last season despite their having been ranked 20th in offensive yards per play, 21st in yards, and 24th in passing yards.  Their strong running game and defense were enough to get them into contention, but I think they need a stronger passing game in order to advance farther into the postseason.  So far Kansas City has had a rough offseason due to the losses of tackle Branden Albert, guard Geoff Schwartz, and receiver Dexter McCluster on offense (among others).

From my research, it appears that KC fans are eager for a new receiver to help Alex Smith move the ball down the field.  Truth be told, I wanted to make a bold pick and take Derek Carr and have Andy Reid work his magic on the talented youngster, but Carr didn't last nearly long enough.  Perhaps a speedy new weapon on the outside will help boost their offense and take the pressure off of Jamaal Charles and that tough defense.

Odell Beckham Jr. is considered to be among the top 4 or 5 receivers in a very deep position group this year.  He should be able to quickly replace the departed McCluster in the receiving game (McCluster had 53 catches for 511 yards, 2nd on the team) as well as on special teams, where OBJ is a dangerous return man.  Beckham doesn't have elite size for the position but he is bigger than McCluster, and he brings 4.43 speed to a team that sorely needs playmakers on the outside.  Thanks to his good hands, speed, and experience running an extensive route tree I expect OBJ to be an immediate contributor this season, at least matching McCluster's production and providing a great complement to Dwayne Bowe.

I had also hoped that Mike Evans might slip to this pick, and after Derek Carr I was locked in to taking a receiver with this pick and there are many good ones to choose from.

Watkins and Evans fell pretty far in this mock draft, but just before the Browns are ready to be on the clock again, a pair of receivers have gone off the board. The Chiefs did lose a lot of valuable pieces this offseason, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them take a major step back in 2014. Beckham seems like a good option to patch up the receiver position, though.

The Cincinnati Bengals are up next, led by troy145.
