2014 DBN Mock Draft: San Diego Chargers Select CB Jason Verrett at No. 25

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

With the 25th pick in the 2014 Dawgs By Nature Community Mock Draft, the San Diego Chargers select...

Jason Verrett, CB, TCU

This selection and write-up was made by Crawford_T:

For a team that made the playoffs last year, the San Diego Chargers have a plethora of needs. They could have used a pass rushing LB, as Melvin Ingram and the ancient Dwight Freeney are the only ones they truly have. With Cam Thomas signing with the Steelers they no longer have a suitable Nose Tackle either. On offense the playoff game against Denver showed that OL help was needed, and they could use another WR as well. While these are all big holes none match the level of the wasteland they call a secondary. No team allowed more yards through the air then San Diego last season. They even allowed a whopping 8 yards per passing attempt. Eric Weddle is really the only starting caliber player they have back there.

Jason Verrett is an athletic, tenacious ball hawk. He has great speed, he also reacts and changes directions quickly. His ball skills are excellent and he is aggressive when the ball is in the air. Verrett isn't afraid to get involved in run support either. Everywhere I've looked has him as one of the best, if not the best cover man in the draft. He is just a great football player. His main drawback is his size, he is small and physical receivers have been known to take advantage of this. His size has also led to injury concerns. While certainly legitimate concerns, the Chargers desperately need talent in their secondary, and Jason Verrett has plenty. They will probably be willing to role the dice on his risks.

I think that for the upcoming season that Jason Verrett's impact could be substantial, but probably won't start on the outside. He will probably start as the nickel corner and cover the slot. I also seriously considered Louis Nix III here as well. I have NT as the 2nd biggest need on the team. I ended up thinking that the bigger need was in the secondary, and I wasn't sure how Nix's knee was. In my scenario I would have the Chargers target Daquan Jones or Justin Ellis in rounds 2-3, and depending on who was available another corner or O-lineman.

Two positions that I'd expect the Browns to be interested in at No. 26 are wide receiver and cornerback, and in this scenario, four of those players just went off the board prior to their selection. This late in the draft, the Chargers are in a position where they could really go after any position. The Chargers need some defensive cover guys to have any chance of stopping Peyton Manning. I don't know if Verrett is that guy due to his size, but I could very well see this being the pick.

The Cleveland Browns are up next, led by StuckInPa.
