Browns Sign QB Vince Young and QB Tyler Thigpen After Minicamp

Kevin Hoffman, Benny Sieu - USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns' first minicamp has ended, and after giving tryouts to two veteran quarterbacks -- Vince Young and Tyler Thigpen -- the team has decided to sign both of them to one-year deals.

The signings do not preclude the Browns from drafting a quarterback whatsoever. QB Brian Hoyer still isn't ready to participate in 11-on-11 drills yet, and the team has several OTA sessions coming later in May through June. Considering QB Alex Tanney doesn't have the experience at the NFL level, Young and Thigpen can handle those duties leading up to training camp.

Head coach Mike Pettine also acknowledged that you can never have enough quarterbacks. He would know -- last year, he was the defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills, but he witnessed the offensive side of the ball get down to fourth-string quarterback Thaddeus Lewis for a handful of starts. Pettine spoke about Young shaking off the rust after not playing for a team last season:

On if he’s seen flashes of playmaking ability in Young throughout minicamp: "Yeah, there were a few. He took off and ran for a first down. We just finished up a rack of third down plays. You can tell he’s very rusty. I was joking with him the other day that it was falling off and rust was falling off in large clumps. He flashed it a couple times, threw a nice long ball the other day. Again, you still don’t realize how big he is until you stand next to him. We talk about all these 6-foot, 5-11 quarterbacks in the draft, when he comes walking out you say, ‘Woah, that’s what they’re supposed to look like.’"

Young and Thigpen have both had their share of success in the NFL, but nothing too dazzling -- the type of body of work that would label someone as a backup. If the Browns draft a quarterback with the firm intention of sitting him in year one as the No. 3 quarterback, we could see Hoyer as the No. 1 guy, with Young and Thigpen battling it out in training camp for the No. 2 role.
