FIFA World Cup 2014: USA vs. Portugal (Open Thread)

Michael Steele

At 6:00 PM ET tonight, the United States plays their second game of the group stage against Portugal. If the United States can pull off a victory, they will guarantee themselves a spot in the Round of 16. A tie would put them in semi-decent shape, while a loss would create for a must-win situation against Germany on Thursday.

The United States will be without Jozy Altidore, who is recovering from a hamstring injury suffered against Ghana. Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to play despite nursing a bum knee and being slowed in training this week.

In the last World Cup, Portugal pulled off two 0-0 ties against Brazil and Ivory Coast in the group stages, but also blew out North Korea 7-0 before losing to Spain 1-0 in the knockout stage. In this year's World Cup, though, Germany handled Portugal with ease, defeating them 4-0, although that was made easier when a Portugal player was sent off after Germany was already up 2-0.

Can the United States secure a spot today, or will fans have to be on the edge of their seats heading into the Germany game? Use this as your open thread to discuss the game and all of the other World Cup action.
