Below, we analyze the snap counts on defense for the Cleveland Browns' Week 9 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Defensive Line
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
DL | Desmond Bryant | 39 |
58% | 2 tackles (2 combined). 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss, 1 quarterback hit. |
DL | Danny Shelton | 38 |
57% | 2 tackles (2 combined). |
DL | Randy Starks | 33 |
49% | 1 tackle (1 combined). 2 bone-headed penalties. |
DL | Xavier Cooper | 28 |
42% | No stats registered. |
DL | John Hughes | 27 |
40% | 3 tackles (3 combined). |
DL | Jamie Meder | 24 |
36% | 1 tackle, 1 assist (2 combined). |
The defensive line saw Desmond Bryant log another sack, but Randy Starks is the guy who made headlines for all of the wrong reasons. He will undoubtedly be one of my goats when I do my weekly game review. It's good to see Danny Shelton's utilization start to creep toward the 60% mark.
Outside Linebacker
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
OLB | Nate Orchard | 38 |
57% | 2 tackles, 1 assist (3 combined). 1 tackle for loss. |
OLB | Paul Kruger | 31 |
46% | 2 tackles (2 combined). 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss, 1 quarterback hit. |
OLB |
Armonty Bryant |
31 |
46% | 3 tackles, 1 assist (4 combined). |
OLB |
Barkevious Mingo |
22 |
33% | 1 tackle (1 combined). |
We finally saw Paul Kruger register his first full sack of the season, coming via a bull rush on backup RT Eric Winston.
Inside Linebacker
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
ILB | Karlos Dansby | 67 |
100% | 7 tackles, 4 assists (11 combined). 1 tackle for loss. |
ILB | Craig Robertson | 44 |
66% | 1 tackles, 2 assists (3 combined). 1 tackle for loss. |
ILB | Christian Kirksey | 26 |
39% | No stats registered. |
Karlos Dansby led the team with 11 tackles as Craig Robertson again out-snapped Christian Kirksey. With Robertson a free agent this offseason and Kirksey not looking like a star-studded player, will the Browns look to spend big (in the draft or free agency) at that position?
Safety
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
S | Tashaun Gipson | 67 |
100% | 3 tackles, 1 assist (4 combined). |
S | Ibraheim Campbell | 55 |
82% | 4 tackles, 1 assist (5 combined). |
CB |
De'Ante Saunders |
9 |
13% | 1 assist (1 combined). |
One of the bright spots defensively was Ibraheim Campbell, who made several nice tackles, including one that stopped a potentially big-time run play. How is it that Campbell sat on the bench for so long?
Cornerback
Pos | Player | Plays | % | Stats |
CB |
Tramon Williams |
65 |
97% |
6 tackles, 1 assist (7 combined). |
CB | Pierre Desir | 41 |
61% | 2 tackles, 2 assists (4 combined). |
CB |
K'Waun Williams |
27 |
40% | 3 tackles, 1 assist (4 combined). |
CB | Justin Gilbert |
23 |
34% | 1 tackle (1 combined). 1 pass defended. |
CB | Johnson Bademosi | 2 |
3% | No stats registered. |
Even though there were some things to frown upon with Justin Gilbert's performance, I was just so escatatic to see the former first-round pick on the field. I was given a shred of home that, "hey, maybe our former first-round pick might get some playing time!" Tramon Williams was beat twice by Tyler Eifert and didn't have a very good game overall.
