Pick Griffin at 4 or BPA or Trade down
Newsflash, we're not going to the Super Bowl next year. So my strategy is based on the continuation of a push to serious stability and then Super Bowl contention.
This will only be Heckert's third draft.
First draft landed us:
Haden (Impact starter)
Ward (Impact starter)
Hardesty (Jury is still out)
McCoy (Starter, tough kid, good pedigree, Jury still out)
Lauvao (Starter, or excellent depth at G)
No 4th Round pick
Assante (lost on Roster shuffle to TB)
Mitchell (6th round fail)
Geathers (6th round fail)

How much longer for our Browns to play in and win a Superbowl?
I was born 2 hours exactly after the Browns beat the Colts on December 27, 1964. Our last NFL Championship. My dad (who was a devoted Browns fan his whole life) each year the Browns failed to make it to the Superbowl blamed it on me and called me Jinx the Cat. There have been teams like the Chicago Cubs in MLB (1908) with a 103 year drought or Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL (1967) with a 44 year drought that are still on going, but somehow because we have been so close and so many times it felt like a Superbowl birth and win should happen, it is more painful to us. It feels like it will never happen. (Screw all the jerks who say a Cleveland Browns team did win a Superbowl in 2000 as the Baltimore Ravens, I want to actually punch those people) My question to everyone is how long do you think till the Cleveland Browns break through and make it to a Superbowl and win a Superbowl?
Are you All In???
I want to know how far would you be willing to go to acquire Robert Griffin III??? The Browns are in a great position in this years draft 3 picks #4,#22, and #37 in the top 40 picks. H&H have created a ton of options for the team in this years draft. The offense was void of any playmakers and are in a desperate need to upgrade WR's, RB, and QB, and to a lesser degree right side of OL. Colt McCoy did not have a good year and it is more than fair to say that he may not be a Franchise type of QB. With those facts in place how far to you go to upgrade the QB position, if you are in a bidding war for the 2nd overall pick and a chance to draft Robert Griffin III. The Browns have more ammunition than there biggest competition Mike Shanahan and the Washington Redskins, but what is too expensive to trade up for Robert Griffin III??? If Washington offers 2012 1st, 2nd,4th and 2013 1st, and 3rd would you be willing to match or beat that offer for the right to get RG3?? I would imagine that H&H would not be willing to part ways with any pick next year so to beat that offer you would probably have to offer a package something like this both 2012 1st #4,#22, 2nd #37, and a 4th rd pick. Or do you stay at the 4th pick and allow Washington to get Robert Griffin III and take Blackmon or even have the option to trade the pick for Blackmon to maybe Jacksonville or Carolina picking up another 2nd rd pick and 2013 1st rd pick giving you 4 picks in the top 40 to upgrade the offense and get a DE and have ammunition for next year if Colt is a flop again next year.
If I Were Tom Heckert...
I decided that in an attempt to pass the time until the start of another Cleveland Browns Super Bowl campaign (AKA the 2012-2013 football season), I am going to change my name to Tom for a few minutes and assume the position of “General Manager” of the Cleveland Browns and let you in on my plan for the perfect offseason.
This will be lengthy. I’ll talk about what I think our needs are, what I think we should do in free agency, and what I think we should do in the draft. Feel free to skip whatever you want.
As I see it, here are positions of need for us:
The Manning Saga (Lets make a Deal!)
Peyton Manning has been cleared to play and most seem to think that he has 3-5 good years left in the NFL. It seems to be an overwhelming understanding that Andrew Luck is a cant miss, future star, best QB to come out in the last 10 years. My view: I AGREE 110%. Call me a dreamer and say there is no way this will happen, but I would do whatever it takes to get him. Everyone has a price and the Colts are in need of a lot of help and could use the picks. I give the Colts Picks 4, 22, 37, and 1st round pick next year. They may be willing to do this with the thought of still possibly getting RG3 with the #4 pick. Yes this is a lot, but I make up the difference in free agency. This guy can take the Browns over the top! Please don't tear me a part its just my opinion.
My bottom five: '11 Browns starters.
These are the first 5 starters I want to see an upgrade over. I view them as top priority but not quite in the same order. Offense first. (Assuming the Browns can re-sign Hillis and DQ.)
22. Scott Fujita (WLB): Somebody has to be at the bottom. Nothing personal Fuj. It's "Strictly Business". He looked quite slow to me in '11. Maybe the 3-4 is better for him. Seemed more interested in shaking the hands of tacklers, rather than making tackles. I'm undecided, leaning towards not, on Kaluka Maiava as a replacement.
An Outsider's Perspective
Let me start of by saying I am a redskin fan. Nothing would thrill me more than the browns passing on RG3 and him falling to the redskins at 6 . But I understand that most of you want RG3 for the same reasons most redskins fans do . In my opinion QB should not top your list because in the AFC North you don't win with a quarterback you win with a running game and a good defense. In the NFC East however we have 3 of the top 10 quarterback in our division. I'm not trying to change your opinions just giving the facts as I see them.
SB Nation 2012 Mock Draft
Greetings Dawgs By Nature, P_Roach17 here from Bleeding Green Nation attempting to organize a SBnation-wide mock draft. After a disappointing season for my Birds, (and being less than thrilled with having to watch the Giants in the SB) I'm left with a football void at my core. So, as a result, I'm turning to the rest of SBnation to satisfy not only my football needs, but the needs of others who are on the outside looking in during this 2011 postseason. You will of course be representing the Cleveland Browns in this Draft, who currently hold the 4th overall pick in the 2012 draft, as I'm sure you all know. Your cooperation in this poll is greatly appreciated. Note: I would like for this poll to reflect the fans choice, not necessarily who you think your team will draft. Now for a few quick rules.
Lets be Realistic
RG3 will not be a Cleveland Brown. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have him on my team I think a real good talent at QB will do a lot for this team and the media attention will be a low key but big thing in changing the losing mentality in Cleveland. But it just won’t happen. The Browns need a first round talent at QB and we haven't had one since Tim Couch (because screw Brady Quinn), but unlike 1999 there are actually supporting pieces on this team to allow for a rookie QB to succeed.
With my personal evaluation of McCoy, I am close to considering him to be "not the guy" just because of his lack of arm strength, but that doesn't matter because my name is not Holmgren. Against DBN's collective opinion, the book is still very out on McCoy. We tend to forget that there was no offseason, new coaches and noo talent on offense. I still contend that Tom Brady couldn't make the Browns a top 10 offense. I know if McCoy plays next season and plays well, we will all be back on the McCoy wagon, but back to Griffin. I'm only 19 so my years of seriously following the Browns don't go much further back than Romeo and Savage, but the biggest thing I feel about this new regime is H&H's attitude. They have a cool calm and collected aura as the guys running the team. I highly doubt these two guys will do anything drastic or do anything on a whim for this team. That includes trading up for RG3. I know its way early, but the dude is gonna go second and someone is going to over pay for him. The price will be waay too steep, I would part with the second round pick to move up two, but not both first round picks and a 3rd and 4th round or whatever the asking price may be. The cool calm and collected leaders won’t put all their eggs in one basket when we need so much more. See ya RG3.
I think a football team should use the draft and offseason to attempt to fix each hole on the team and at the end of the season and find new holes. Since RG3 goes at 2, the Browns at 4 have their choice of Blackmon and Richardson and I would be happy with both. I would go Blackmon at 4 and sign a FA WR like Stevie Johnson, someone with speed to get past the secondary. Along with Little and Cribbs, Bam WR problems solved. With that second first round pick find a right tackle and pick up line depth in the later rounds and free agency. Boom line problems solved. Pick up a linebacker with the second round pick, D end in free agency, pick up a corner like the FA from Nawlins move Sheldon Brown to safety. Bang defensive problems solved. Take a third round QB to push McCoy. Resign Hillis, hope Hardesty doesn't suck, and remember we have Brandon Jackson. Other random noise, offensive problems fixed. Draft the rest of the draft for depth, best player available.
So now we are back to McCoy, the book is still out on him and he'll get another year to start. But we still need another QB behind him to A push him, and B possibly replace him. Tannehill? Weeden? No thanks. There is a possibility that H&H have tabs on a backup QB elsewhere in the league. No, not Flynn, but maybe Mallet (hey you can pay him in coke), any other names ring a bell? The main reason I'm writing this post is to see DBN's opinion on Arizona State's QB Brock Osweiler. He is not a complete package, he needs work, but [with McCoy] isn’t this what we are looking for? He is like 6'8 or 6'9, something that makes him special. I don’t know much about him but I'm intrigued by his size and via some YouTube, he has good arm strength. Watching that rapist from that shitcity east of Cleveland twice a year, his size is something all teams should crave and if the browns could pick up their own version, I'd love it. So DBN, what do you think? Am I crazy, right, wrong? Does anyone know anything about this ASU guy? Do you know of any other backup QBs in the league that H&H may have their eye on?
