an outsiders perspective

Let me start of by saying I am a redskin fan. Nothing would thrill me more than the browns passing on RG3 and him falling to the redskins at 6 . But I understand that most of you want RG3 for the same reasons most redskins fans do . In my opinion qb should not top your list because in the afc north you dont win with a quaterback you win with a running game and a good defense. In the nfc east however we have 3 of the top 10 quaterback in our division. Im not trying to change your opinions just giving the facts as I see them.

SB Nation 2012 Mock Draft

Greetings Dawgs By Nature, P_Roach17 here from Bleeding Green Nation attempting to organize a SBnation-wide mock draft. After a disappointing season for my Birds, (and being less than thrilled with having to watch the Giants in the SB) I'm left with a football void at my core. So, as a result, I'm turning to the rest of SBnation to satisfy not only my football needs, but the needs of others who are on the outside looking in during this 2011 postseason. You will of course be representing the Cleveland Browns in this Draft, who currently hold the 4th overall pick in the 2012 draft, as I'm sure you all know. Your cooperation in this poll is greatly appreciated. Note: I would like for this poll to reflect the fans choice, not necessarily who you think your team will draft. Now for a few quick rules.

With the 4th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft the Cleveland Browns select...

Lets be Realistic

RG3 will not be a Cleveland Brown. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have him on my team I think a real good talent at QB will do a lot for this team and the media attention will be a low key but big thing in changing the losing mentality in Cleveland. But it just won’t happen. The Browns need a first round talent at QB and we haven't had one since Tim Couch (because screw Brady Quinn), but unlike 1999 there are actually supporting pieces on this team to allow for a rookie QB to succeed.

With my personal evaluation of McCoy, I am close to considering him to be "not the guy" just because of his lack of arm strength, but that doesn't matter because my name is not Holmgren. Against DBN's collective opinion, the book is still very out on McCoy. We tend to forget that there was no offseason, new coaches and noo talent on offense. I still contend that Tom Brady couldn't make the Browns a top 10 offense. I know if McCoy plays next season and plays well, we will all be back on the McCoy wagon, but back to Griffin. I'm only 19 so my years of seriously following the Browns don't go much further back than Romeo and Savage, but the biggest thing I feel about this new regime is H&H's attitude. They have a cool calm and collected aura as the guys running the team. I highly doubt these two guys will do anything drastic or do anything on a whim for this team. That includes trading up for RG3. I know its way early, but the dude is gonna go second and someone is going to over pay for him. The price will be waay too steep, I would part with the second round pick to move up two, but not both first round picks and a 3rd and 4th round or whatever the asking price may be. The cool calm and collected leaders won’t put all their eggs in one basket when we need so much more. See ya RG3.

I think a football team should use the draft and offseason to attempt to fix each hole on the team and at the end of the season and find new holes. Since RG3 goes at 2, the Browns at 4 have their choice of Blackmon and Richardson and I would be happy with both. I would go Blackmon at 4 and sign a FA WR like Stevie Johnson, someone with speed to get past the secondary. Along with Little and Cribbs, Bam WR problems solved. With that second first round pick find a right tackle and pick up line depth in the later rounds and free agency. Boom line problems solved. Pick up a linebacker with the second round pick, D end in free agency, pick up a corner like the FA from Nawlins move Sheldon Brown to safety. Bang defensive problems solved. Take a third round QB to push McCoy. Resign Hillis, hope Hardesty doesn't suck, and remember we have Brandon Jackson. Other random noise, offensive problems fixed. Draft the rest of the draft for depth, best player available.

So now we are back to McCoy, the book is still out on him and he'll get another year to start. But we still need another QB behind him to A push him, and B possibly replace him. Tannehill? Weeden? No thanks. There is a possibility that H&H have tabs on a backup QB elsewhere in the league. No, not Flynn, but maybe Mallet (hey you can pay him in coke), any other names ring a bell? The main reason I'm writing this post is to see DBN's opinion on Arizona State's QB Brock Osweiler. He is not a complete package, he needs work, but [with McCoy] isn’t this what we are looking for? He is like 6'8 or 6'9, something that makes him special. I don’t know much about him but I'm intrigued by his size and via some YouTube, he has good arm strength. Watching that rapist from that shitcity east of Cleveland twice a year, his size is something all teams should crave and if the browns could pick up their own version, I'd love it. So DBN, what do you think? Am I crazy, right, wrong? Does anyone know anything about this ASU guy? Do you know of any other backup QBs in the league that H&H may have their eye on?

I'd be happy with that

DBN Player Ranking

Let me start by saying, I don't intend this to be a discussion thread. My intention here is a way of ranking players and to hear what all of you want without any sort of agenda. I just want a name under a category. For instance:

QB

RG3

Jason Campbell

Just reply to the position. If you like a player that is already listed, just rec the name. I'm curious to see which players get the most recs and I would like to learn more about them. Obviously this can apply to FA's and draft prospects per my example. I think this could be an interesting exercise for all of us and maybe a bit fun.

The face off

There are so many more worthy things to discuss, but since I have heard a lot of feedback on my name ( all very amusing). I thought I would ask the real important stuff, like which is better Bertman's or the Stadium Mustard brand. Now if you have never been to a Cleveland sporting event and been to both the Jake (sorry, but that's what it is) and Cleveland Browns Stadium, they both serve different Mustards. Bertman's was the original and still has the Chief grinning on the front label and well Stadium Mustard makes no mysteries about being a knock off or a tribute if you will. You can get Bertman's at the Jake and you can get Stadium Mustard at Cleveland Browns Stadium. (don't ask why, it may be complicated like quantum physics)

What if the Browns were London's "Home" team?

Now, let me speak. I'm not going Art Modell on you here. But think about it. The NFL has started to play games in London over the past few seasons. Now, the St. Louis Rams are going to have a home game there for the next three seasons. What if it were the Browns instead though?

Suggestions - DBN Glossary & Menu

Someone suggested in another thread that the DBN Glossary was due for an update. SB also thinks it's time to update the Joe Thomas's House of Pancakes menu. Since it's the off-season now, and the draft talk is already being beaten into the ground, it seems like as good a time as any to go ahead with something fun and unrelated to the draft, Pat Shurmur's playcalling, Colt McCoy's height, etc.

Why not Flynn?

Something I’ve heard far too little about is going after a QB is free agency. Here is my thinking for why we should go after one, well basically go after Flynn:

I don’t think we’re focusing enough on what NEEDS to be done in Free Agency to reach the magic $142.5 million dollar mark for this year’s salary cap. Well, more like $120.375 in salary and the other $22 odd million going to benefits, but you get the idea.

The league as a whole needs to use 95% of that figure this year, some $3.1 billion By next year the spending will be mandatory for each individual team, so there’s no real reason why Lerner cheap butt shouldn’t pull out his wallet this year and have H/H land us something in 2012 FA. He will have a difficult time spending the money next year if he doesn’t start this year.

Bottom line, quick and dirty: We will let Adams ($1.6 m.) Dawson (3.25 m.), A. Smith (640k) all go. The #4 pick will sign for around $5 m. and the #22 will go for about $2 m. This will leave us (assuming a D. Jackson resign and even a generous P. Hillis resign) at least $ 25 m. in cap room to play with…

The team is poised to have a breakout season if we could just pull together some important offensive pieces to the puzzle. (Let's ignore the Defensive needs for the moment for the sake of argument) The glaring deficiencies are QB, WR, and RT. (Colt apologetics hold off for a minute.) Looking at the NFL as a whole, this has become a QB driven league. The elite teams have elite QBs, end of discussion. H/H are not idiots, they know this fact, and they know that we need to do whatever we can do to find one.

Why go for a QB in FA?

Reason 1: H/H have a clear philosophy of building through the draft, we all get that. And for that reason I’m confident they will try to fill our offensive voids of WR and RT through this year’s draft. At both of these positions rookie players can have an immediate impact, which is a blatant necessity for whatever players we pick up in at least the first 2 rounds this April. QB’s have a much steeper learning curve and cannot make an immediate (and winning, Cam’s team was still 6-10) impact in this league. This is a simple fact.

Reason 2: H/H have never drafted or even groomed and elite QB. Favre and Hasselbeck were both FA or trade pick ups. McNabb was already on the roster when Heckert arrived. Holgrem has made comments time and again alluding to the fact that they are looking for this elusive franchise QB. He knows the immediate impact it would have on this tea. He knows the pressure it would take off our already good D in becoming another great AFC North D.

Reason 3: I’d rather take a QB with NFL experience and grooming then take a flyer on a QB that may or may not be elite and may or may not even fit a WCO system (RGIII). Nowhere else in this draft or the next are any prospects as promising… This is reason enough to at least consider a FA QB.

All this being said, there is only one real prospect for us this year. Well and one fantasy prospect. Here are the two options I see and the cases for them:

FA QB #1: Matt Flynn:

1. I can’t stress how important this is to H/H. Flynn already knows the West Coast offense, he know the lingo, he has been groomed in essentially the same system Shurmer is attempting to run; the learning curve will be minimal .

2. GB can’t afford to franchise tag him at the QB position ($18 mill., no way!) He will be an unrestricted FA

3. He has all the athletic tools to succeed in the WCO, athleticism, speed, good decision-making, exceptional grooming

4. He is an immediate upgrade over Colt, even if he is the next Matt Schaub (backup groomed into average/above average starter); we can win with that

5. There is no realistic FA QB’s on the horizon in 2013 if Colt is still a bust next year. (Flacco and Schaub are UFA next year, but they’ll likely get extensions this season).

6. He won’t come cheap, but won’t come that expensive either… think $10 m. range. We can certainly make him a great offer.

FA QB #2: Peyton Manning: (of course pending his return)

Qualifier: Let's be honest he'll never come to Cleveland at this point in his career to try and rebuild a franchise... but wouldn't it be cool... at least there's some factors going in our favor:

1. I don’t care what you say…on March 8, he is due a $28 m. signing bonus. New coach, new GM, new QB (Luck), have you heard Peyton’s comments this week?… all signs point to an exit. The new leadership can’t rebuild with both Manning and Luck on the roster, that is $50 m. in cap space tied up in one position, this is a business folks… and that’s bad business keeping on the roster in a rebuild

2. Peyton knows the WCO inside and out

3.We are supposedly getting an OC, but what if we don’t?… and Peyton fills this role on the field… him and Shurmer essentially splitting play calling duties… or even brining in the Colts OC who got just fired (Tom Moore) to help install that clearly effective system

4. Heck, we can afford whatever price he asks

5. With our D and Peyton at the helm (pick up a RT and WR or two)… we have an elite team that can compete with anyone…

6. Having Peyton for 3 years would be a Godsend, but also a stop-gap, during this period we now have additional time to groom a QB of the future, whomever that may be

Draft question from a St. Louis Rams fan

Hello Dawgs By Nature. First, let me say that I have always respected the Browns fans, as you all seem to be as passionate and loyal as fans can be. In full disclosure, I am not a fan of the Browns, but will say that I often root for them, as I do like the Browns more than any other AFC North team. I sincerely hope for your future success, and I certainly wish the Rams had many of your key pieces on their team, particularly along the O-Line and in the secondary. Speaking of key pieces...

Obviously there has been much media chatter concerning RGIII, the Rams' 2nd pick, and potential trade partners. I am of the mind that CLE presents the best trade option, as there is talk that you may desire RGIII, and you have a haul of picks from that ATL trade in last year's draft. I am hoping the Rams do not try to get too greedy, and thus I am writing to you to get a sense of what "too greedy" might be.

I, for one, would be thrilled with your two 1st round picks and your 2nd and 4th in the 2012 draft. Asking for any more than that would qualify as greedy in my book, as you are only moving up 2 spots. However, it occurs to me that those 4 picks may qualify as greedy to you, the fans. There is of course, however, the matter of Shanahan and Snyder, who could offer the proverbial farm, thereby making the price very steep.

So, what say you, Dawgs By Nature? Do you even want RGIII? What would a fair asking price be for trading up to take RGIII--if you even want him?

Thank you in advance for any input you can give!

Draft Talk Volume 1

Please REC this so it stays at the top.

Every year we see a huge spike in FanPosts. Please feel free to keep firing up FanPosts about all sorts of things, but if you have a short one on the draft, (1 or 2 paragraphs) this is the spot.

Not to say that this isn't great, but a lot of them are somewhat the same topic. So, a few seasons back, we decided to make a Draft Post.

Everything to do with the draft can be dumped in here.

You have a "dream draft" that you would like to show everyone? Plop it here. Like a player and want to tell everyone about? Yep, right here.

These will fill up quick, but don't worry, one of the mods will create another one when needed.

So go ahead and fire away. Draft Talk it up people.
