2007 Training Camp
Training Camp Report: Day 15 - Quinn Rolls
Although there were two practice sessions on Tuesday, I'm going to combine both of them into one report to catch up for Wednesday's report. A lot of things happened, but it shouldn't be too confusing to understand that some notes may relate to the morning session, evening session, or both:
- Front Runner: The best quarterback of the competition was Charlie Frye again, simply due to consistency. You know what you're going to get out of Frye on a daily basis, and his mobility can sometimes improve his play. The same simply cannot be said for Derek Anderson. During practice, he'll throw several passes in a row to get everyone excited, and then he'll throw just an awful pass.
- TE Battle: It would seem as if the tight end battle between Darnell Dinkins and Ryan Krause is heating up, if the team decides to only keep one of them. Dinkins displayed his sharp blocking skills during practice by actually smothering linebacker Kamerion Wimbley to the ground. Meanwhile, Krause was on the receiving end of a few passes from Frye against the second- and third-team defenses.
- Quinn Steps Up: Frye may have been the better quarterback between him and Anderson, but Brady Quinn was the highlight of practice. During seven-on-seven drills, Quinn was able to connect on a perfect 40-yard pass to receiver Mike Mason (who has been stepping up in camp actually). The Notre Dame quarterback displayed great arm strength, and suddenly seemed to gain more reps when the scrimmage began. On one of his first plays, he called for an audible. On the passing play, Quinn hit Braylon Edwards for a touchdown pass after Edwards split two defenders. When the defense blitzed Quinn later on, he recognized it quickly and threw to Jerome Harrison.
- Harrison's Redemption: Based on this practice, Jerome Harrison may have redeemed himself from Saturday's miscues. Harrison was one of the standouts throughout practice, mainly due to the effective use of his quickness.
- Out Again: With linebacker Andra Davis sitting out again, Leon Williams continued to make his push for more playing time. If Davis' injuries continue, Williams may start against the Lions.
- Daily Wilson: In today's report, Travis Wilson bailed Derek Anderson out on a nice leaping catch on third down over cornerback Eric Wright along the sideline.
- Hit of the Day: WHACK! Although he's a little guy, cornerback Daven Holly had a nice hit on receiver Kendrick Mosley. Mosley never saw Holly coming from his blind side.
- Practice How You Play: The Browns are keeping their offense simple in practice it seems, throwing a lot of passes to tight ends and running backs in the flat. The only one that seemed to make more of his own decisions was Quinn.
- Minter Returns: In a surprising move, cornerback DeMario Minter finally practiced. There is no word on whether or not he'll play this Saturday against the Lions, but if he does, that could decrease Brandon McDonald's chances of making the final roster.
- Injury Updates: Tight end Kellen Winslow and cornerback Gary Baxter sat out the morning sessions of practice, but both returned for the evening. Crennel did not rule Baxter out for playing against the Lions.
- Double Rush: Earlier in camp, I mentioned how both Willie McGinest and Antwaan Peek were effective at rushing the passer when they blitz from the same side. The Browns tried that with Peek and Wimbley during practice, and it didn't look too bad.
- Tidbits: Safety Sean Jones is clearly the captain of the secondary, with Brodney Pool and Justin Hamilton behind him. On the offensive line, the Browns are still giving Ryan Tucker some reps at guard. The team even shifted Seth McKinney to left guard a few times.

Training Camp Report: Day 14 - Baxter Returns
The Browns hit the practice field on Monday for the first time since their preseason victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Many players made impressions on gameday, but there are still positions to be won based on what individuals do in practice. Several people know that their performance this week against the Detroit Lions may be their final chance to impress Romeo Crennel and the rest of the staff. Let's see how things went:
- Wise Decision?: Apparantly, there may actually be some more common sense than we thought in the Browns organization. After Chris Barclay's game-winning punt return against the Kansas City Chiefs, the team is now giving him reps at returning punts in practice. He also received a few more reps at the running back position. The preseason doesn't really matter for many players, but it's amazing how one well-timed play can suddenly increase your chances of making the final roster. There is some negativity in this fairytale though: Barclay basically muffed three of the punts that Dave Zastudil sent his way.
- Scout Preparations: The Browns didn't waste any time getting prepared for their game against the Detroit Lions, and they finally allowed cornerback Gary Baxter to see some action on the scout defensive team, where he was matched up against some of the Browns' receivers. He still needs to get back into a groove to be used to live-game action again, but it looks like Baxter is actually going to complete his remarkable comeback. There have not been any comments made in regard to whether or not he'll play in any preseason games.

- Quinn Elevated: Crennel didn't make a big deal about it, but Brady Quinn worked with the third team a lot during practice, taking reps away from veteran Ken Dorsey. That's not to say that Dorsey won't come in before Quinn this Saturday, but it doesn't look like Quinn will be held back too long much longer. Quinn also had some reps with the second team, and has been confirmed to play against the Lions in the second half. Quinn looked sharp timing his receivers on shorter passes, but he overthrew them when it came time to throw the deep ball.
- Anderson to Start?: While he didn't admit to anything, Crennel gave a hint that Derek Anderson may start against the Lions. I can't say that I disagree with that for the sake of being fair. In practice Monday, Frye and Anderson were the opposite of Quinn almost, as they did well throwing the deep ball but kept mistiming their shorter throws. Anderson looked more accurate than he did in the Chiefs game, and Frye was Frye. Overall, none of the quarterbacks did a bad job.
- Williams Time: Due to an ankle injury, linebacker Andra Davis was limited for most of practice, allowing Leon Williams to receive more playing time. Although D'Qwell Jackson is projected to start next to Davis, it would not surprise me if Williams impresses the staff enough to be inserted into the starting lineup. Other injuries included DeMario Minter (foot) and Justin Sandy (knee).
- Secondary Sharp: When the offensive scout team was run against our first-string defense, both Sean Jones and Leigh Bodden performed well. Jones broke up a few passes while Bodden had an interception.
- Roster Addition: The team re-signed offensive lineman Brent Pousson, an undrafted free agent from McNeese State. He was originally waived by the Browns after rookie minicamp.

Training Camp Report: Day 13 - McGinest Out
With training camp closed to the fans and the media on Wednesday, I am forced to skip a "Day 12" report on training camp, and move right along to Day 13. But first, another issue has developed with the loss of two veteran linebackers: Willie McGinest and Matt Stewart.
McGinest was scheduled to undergo surgery this afternoon to repair a bulging disk in his back. McGinest will be out of action for at least six weeks before having to be re-evaluated. The Browns are not going to place him on the injured reserve, in hopes that they will get him back around the mid-way point of the season. However, I would expect him to be placed on the physically unable to perform list very soon.
For Stewart, the news was much worse. Stewart had surgery this morning to repair a torn labrum. He will be placed on the injured reserve, and will miss the entire season. While the Browns lost two veterans, this is the perfect opportunity for two players to step their games up: Antwaan Peek and Chaun Thompson. Peek will be inserted into the starting lineup, taking McGinest's spot. Head coach Romeo Crennel stated that Thompson will move back to the outside linebacker position.
Besides those two men receiving extended playing time, this theoretically opens up two extra spots on the final roster for reserve linebackers. Where as guys like Mason Unck or David McMillan may have been cut before, now they will be looked at closer in camp and throughout the preseason games. Either way, the losses of McGinest and Stewart are negatives, but not major downers. I felt that Peek should have been our starting outside linebacker over McGinest anyway, and Stewart would've simply been on the sidelines in case one of the youngsters got injured.
Now then: back to today's camp. Rain again canceled the outdoor practice, which has seemingly become a common occurrence as of late. The troops were indoors though, and the media had their first chance to get a look at Brady Quinn in action at training camp:

- Starting QB: Remember when Romeo Crennel stated that he would flip a coin to determine which quarterback would start on Saturday? Apparently, he may actually be doing that. Crennel stated that the decision would come at random, and both quarterbacks would operate in an unusual fashion for a preseason game: alternating. For example, if the coin flip says that Derek Anderson will start the game, then he'll get one series with the first unit. In the second series, Charlie Frye would operate the first unit. In the third series, Anderson would operate the second unit. Finally, Frye would operate the second unit with the fourth drive. That will all take place in the first half. If there are excess series or not enough series, the alternating process will probably go on still.
- Other Men: Crennel also stated that Ken Dorsey would see most of the action in the second half, and that Brady Quinn "might" see two plays (probably handoffs).
- Game ON: Wouldn't it only be fitting that during Quinn's first day in camp that the media could see, that Anderson and Frye would play at their best? That's exactly what happened, as both quarterbacks faced the "scout" defense, simulating what the Kansas City Chiefs would do. Both quarterbacks had big gains and quality passes. Both quarterbacks were solid, but neither was leaps and bounds better than the other. Anderson did have one great streak where he threw a strike to Joshua Cribbs in the back of the end zone, and then a tight spiral to Braylon Edwards a little later.
- Rookie Blunders: Now that Quinn's in camp, it's time to report on the kid. Quinn was acting as the scout quarterback for the Chiefs against the Browns defense. One of his better plays came on a pass to receiver Mike Mason in the end zone. After that though, Quinn missed one pass to Kendrick Mosley and another one to Darnell Dinkins. On the Dinkins play, there was tight coverage and Quinn threw it out of the back of the end zone.

Training Camp Report: Day 11 - Quinn Signed
Although it's a little bit of a delay, today's coverage focuses on what went on Tuesday, including the end of Brady Quinn's holdout. After all of those frustrating 11 days of hearing that Quinn was practicing out in Arizona and far from a deal with the Browns, the quarterback from Notre Dame agreed to a five-year deal worth $20.2 million. Quinn has a clause in his contract where if he becomes the team's starting quarterback in the future, that amount will jump up to about $30 million.
Quinn knows that he can't expect to have the starting role handed to him. "Believe me, I don't deserve anything," said Quinn on Wednesday. "I think I have to earn a lot with the coaching staff but also with the team. But that's just something that you have to understand coming into it, especially as a rookie. You have to earn everything that you get."
Quinn is confident that he will be starting at some point during the season. Initial reports by head coach Romeo Crennel stated that Quinn could see very minimal action against the Kansas City Chiefs, or he may not see any playing time. Quinn, as well as all Browns fans, need to understand that the team can't stop everything that they're doing just to nurture Quinn along this far into camp. Quinn has a lot of catching up to do, and even if his passes look crisper than Charlie Frye's or Derek Anderson's, he'll still be behind in terms of developing chemistry with his the system and his teammates. Now then, the Browns had a practice session yesterday that was moved indoors due to rain. Let's see what we were able to find out about what went on:

- Basic Passes: With practice moved indoors, the quarterbacks really didn't try to throw the ball deep down the field. Instead, they stuck to basic tight ends passes and a couple of nice little screen plays. It's useful and necessary for gameday, but in terms of someone making a splash in the competition, there's nothing to report.
- Daily Wilson: The coaches have been constantly pushing receiver Travis Wilson to stay focused, and the motivation may be working. Wilson has been doing pretty good in camp, and was listed ahead of Joshua Cribbs on the team's depth chart a few days ago. However, his practice couldn't go without at least one routine drop, something he was forced to do pushups for.
- Mosley's Day: It was another solid day for receiver Kendrick Mosley, but as good as he may be, it's unfortunate that he'll probably be placed on the practice squad at best due to a number's game. The Browns have a lot of people that drop balls too often, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.
- Pool's Drop: Safety Brodney Pool dropped an interception.
- Injuries Piling Up: The worst story of the day came when left guard Eric Steinbach left during the session after falling on his right knee. Following this post, I am getting ready to prepare another post to update his status. The injury list was very long actually, with Tim Carter (thumb), DeMario Minter (foot), Isaac Sowells (concussion), Kenny Wright (groin), Matt Stewart (shoulder), Jerome Jackson, and Willie McGinest (back) all sat out. Not a good sign considering the first preseason game is quickly approaching.
- Barclay's Returns: If something happens to Joshua Cribbs, expect Chris Barclay to be the team's primary kick returner. That should be an extra bonus that gets Barclay on the practice squad again.

Training Camp Report: Day 10 (Evening)
After a little bit of sloppiness with receiving in the morning on Monday, the evening practice went a lot smoother for most of the troops:
- Offense Improves: It was pleasant for Romeo Crennel that the sluggish offensive effort from the morning didn't carry over into the evening. In the morning session, dropped passes plagued the receivers. In the evening, there weren't nearly as many dropped passes to fuss about.

- Sit DOWN: On the play of the evening, defensive end Shaun Smith broke through the line and stood running back Jamal Lewis up in a goal line drill. Imagine the Browns coming through and stopping Warrick Dunn in 2003 to make it into the postseason - a play like that can save an entire season.
- Linebacking Work: Although this may have been more so in the morning, linebackers Leon Williams and Chaun Thompson were given some much-needed reps with the first team. Andra Davis shifted over and was experimenting at the outside linebacker position, something that is very interesting. For the record, the coaching staff said that they were just giving people some work at extra positions for versatility.
- Jokester: Wide receiver Braylon Edwards decided to have a little bit of fun with running back Jason Wright. Edwards secretly lined up next to Wright and grabbed on to his sock as he tried to take of. The fans laughed at the incident, but it sounds like something that you would've had to have been there to find it entertaining.
- Nothing Horrible: Once again, both quarterbacks were not horrible, but neither one excelled either. Charlie Frye was on a roll at one point, hitting Kellen Winslow, Tim Carter, and Braylon Edwards on three consecutive passes. One of Derek Anderson's highlights came when he hit Tim Carter with a touchdown pass in the back of the end zone during a goal-line drill.
- Wright Down: No, not Eric Wright, but Kenny Wright. Kenny did not practice with a groin injury, allowing Eric even more time on the field. Matt Stewart and Willie McGinest both sat out again.
- Quinn Progress?: There are rumors circulating the Internet that the gap may be closing quickly on the negotiations with quarterback Brady Quinn. If Quinn signs soon, I wouldn't expect him to play this Saturday, but he could play in our second preseason game as the third man into the game.

Training Camp Report: Day 10 (Morning)
It wouldn't be so bad if it was only hot in Cleveland, but I'm getting sick of the muggy weather already. I can take a shower in the morning, only to feel as if I haven't showered in days by the afternoon. The Browns had to go through two sessions of it today, so at least the temperatures were rather cool in the morning:
- Frye Steps Up: Although it hasn't been a "great" training camp for Charlie Frye, he's been consistent. This morning may have been his break out day though, as he was having success like no other session. Frye had an early highlight touchdown pass to local receiver Steve Sanders. Later on, Frye made a nice throw to Tim Carter, who was being tightly guarded by Eric Wright. During 11-on-11 drills, on of Frye's best passes came when he hit tight end Steve Heiden between two defenders.
- Depth Chart Leader: As many of you already know by now, Charlie Frye was listed on top of the depth chart released by the Browns today. Although Crennel stated that this doesn't mean Frye is a lock to start the game against the Kansas City Chiefs, bank on him starting for logical purposes.
- McDonald Fever: While Chase Pittman and Melina Purcell really haven't been heard from in camp so far, rookie cornerback Brandon McDonald continues to make an impact. McDonald broke up a pass intended for Joshua Cribbs today.
- Injury Updates: Running back Jason Wright returned to regular drills following his concussion a few days ago. Offensive lineman Isaac Sowells was still watching on the sidelines, however. Linebacker Willie McGinest (back) did not practice.
- Thompson's Alive: If the Browns actually decided to use Chaun Thompson at least twice every game this season on special blitz plays, then I'd want him to have a roster spot on this team. Thompson had a play this morning where he could've sacked Frye, but he pulled up, for obvious reasons.
- Ride Those Bikes: For the morning, Braylon Edwards and Jamal Lewis stuck to riding the stationary bikes early on. They joined the team during 11-on-11 drills.
- Just Like Last Year: Last year, Jerome Harrison was fantastic in camp in the preseason. After another couple of nice runs again today, he's well on his way to getting the fans excited about him again. Let's hope the coaches follow through and give him some playing time.

Training Camp Report: Day 9 - Closed In
A steady rain throughout the day cancelled the team's outdoor practice for the first time this season, but the team was busy inside the closed facility. Since the session was closed to fans and only the media could see what was going on, it's impossible to put together an informative Day 9 recap. Perhaps the story of a man holding a clipboard will overshadow that?
- Bentley Present: Center LeCharles Bentley was on the field during practice Sunday, a supposed step forward to making a return to football. Don't get too excited though, because Bentley did not participate in any drills, although he did wear his jersey. Bentley stood around during practice with a clipboard, taking notes on the terminology involved with the offense. Bentley told the media that his knee is currently around 70% healed. When he returns to football, he expects it to only be 90% healed, because it'll never be what it once was.

- LeCharles' Fate: Bentley's fate will be based on that percentage when the team examines him at the end of training camp. If he's at 90%, he may be activated and have a chance to be used as a backup to start the season. If he's below 90%, then he'll remain on the PUP list, and then be re-evaluated after six weeks have passed by. It looks like Bentley is still ahead of schedule in the long run, but without the same miracle flavor that Braylon Edwards and Gary Baxter provided.

- Change Confirmed: It would seem as if Romeo Crennel has declared Joe Thomas as the opening day starting left tackle. Kevin Shaffer was at right tackle during practice today, and when asked whether or not this was the team's first unit for the future, Crennel simply stated, "Yes."
- Substance Abuser: Due to the public announcement of his suspension, Ryan Tucker will continue working with the third-team offense throughout training camp, allowing Nat Dorsey and Kelly Butler to receive more reps.
- Battling Injuries: Several players returned from injuries. Tim Carter was practicing again after nursing a sore hamstring the past few days. Fullback Lawrence Vickers and linebacker Antwaan Peek were also on the field after battling through injuries. Running back Jason Wright participated in drills that did not involve contact. After a practice off, Joe Jurevicius was on the field too.
- Out With Injuries: Linebacker Matt Stewart did not practice again, and will be out for several days with a shoulder problem. Cornerback Kenny Wright was out with a groin problem, and offensive lineman Isaac Sowells was absent with his concussion.
- Stepping Up: According to the Browns' website, Syndric Steptoe was the "Camper of the Day" for displaying good quickness and being able to stop on a dime, as well as changing direction.
- Minor Edge: Indoors, Derek Anderson had the slight edge over Charlie Frye. Anderson had some nice hookups with his receivers, while Frye had to pull the ball down and run it himself a few times after not being able to find an open target.
- Hall of Fame Game: The Steelers defeated the Saints, 20-7 in the first game of the preseason. Roethlisberger was 2-of-3 for 73 yards.

Training Camp Report: Day 8 (Evening)
With the Browns having no practice scheduled for Saturday, I was either going to take the day off from Dawgs By Nature on Saturday or Sunday. I decided to take it on Saturday, so I apologize if any of you were constantly refreshing for updates throughout the day. Now, let's shift back a little bit to Friday's evening practices, which was highlighted by the Browns performing in a scrimmage-like environment:
- Game Atmosphere: Since there weren't two different teams on the field, it was purely offense vs. defense. To simulate that atmosphere, the offense was located on one sideline, while the defense was on the opposite sideline. Substitutions were also being made in appropriate situations.
- Frye's Team: The first team was on the field with Charlie Frye, as Joe Thomas and Kevin Shaffer were both featured on the offensive line. Frye's highlights in the opening included a strike to Steve Heiden. A little later, Jamal Lewis had a very nice run on the left side of the line.
- Anderson's Team: While Frye did an ok job, Derek Anderson's drive came to a stop fairly quickly. After hitting Travis Wilson on a nice over-the-shoulder catch, the drive stalled when Jerome Harrison lost a yard on third down with four yards to go. Harrison tried to sneak a run in on the left side of the line.
- Red-Zone Scrimmage: In the drill involving offenses in the red zone, Frye pulled out as the winner again. In the red zone, Frye hit receiver Kendrick Mosley for a touchdown. Anderson tried to utilize a few running plays from Jamal Lewis, but Anderson's passes to Joshua Cribbs and Steve Heiden fell incomplete. To Anderson's credit, if Heiden would have held onto his pass, he probably would've had a touchdown.
- Two-Minute Drill: Put another checkmark on the board for Frye, who performed better than Anderson with two minutes to go. Anderson was not able to get a first down against the first-team defense, meaning his drive was stopped quickly. Frye on the other hand was able to lead the second team down into field-goal range.
- Daily Wilson: The progress can be seen with Travis Wilson's over-the-shoulder catches in camp recently. He is still dropping a few balls that he should have though, giving him nothing more than an average effort Friday night.
- Wimbley Owns Thomas: When Kamerion Wimbley dipped his shoulder, Joe Thomas couldn't stop him, a play that would've definitely resulted in a sack if contact was allowed.
- Injury Report: The following people did not practice: CB DeMario Minter (foot), RB Jason Wright (concussion), WR Mike Mason (knee), WR Tim Carter (hamstring), and OG Isaac Sowells (concussion). CB Gary Baxter, WR Joe Jurevicius, LB Matt Stewart, and LB Antwaan Peek sat out of the practice. FB Lawrence Vickers limped off the field during practice with a sore knee.

Training Camp Report: Day 8 (Morning)
After the news regarding Ryan Tucker, the Browns still had two practice sessions scheduled for today. The morning practice was very light with no pads involved. The team worked numerous drills rather than the usual type of things they've been doing the past several days, so it's difficult to have any notes on specific players. Maybe these drills will be put into play during the evening practice, when everybody should be back in pads.

- QB Keepers: The team worked on quarterback sneak drills down near the goal line. The emphasis would focus on the best part of the line for the QB to push towards, and the technique involved in doing so.
- Miracle Plays: With "no time remaining on the clock", the Browns worked on laterals. You know what I'm talking about; the type of things that get you excited at some point near the end of a game when your team is losing, only to see the defense recover a fumble or see a flag thrown for an illegal forward pass. Still, they practice it for a reason: miracles do happen.
- Hard Count: Do you ever get sick of seeing Romeo Crennel send the team back on the field for a 4th-and-1, and the only thing that our quarterback does is run up to the line and deliver a hard count before calling a timeout, just in case the defense will jump offsides? The Browns worked on that this morning.
- Instructions: As I stated in the introduction, this practice was not intended for any specific players to shine. Crennel was often giving instructions to the entire team, which would make it hard for fans to know what was being said from a distance.

Training Camp Report: Day 7 - WR Down
With Day 7 of training camp, several wide receivers were able to take advantage of a situation to make an impression on the coaches. What was the reasoning behind that? Read on and you'll find out...
- No Rain Today: Although a massive downpour came out of no where to flood the streets of Downtown Cleveland during the afternoon, not a drop appeared to fall on Berea. The heat still played a factor in fatigue today, especially during the hottest part of the day.

- Injuries Piling Up: The injury report is quickly growing after Orpheus Roye's announcement of surgery (which was successful this morning). Isaac Sowells and Jason Wright sat out of practice after feeling dizzy as a result of collisions from Wednesday's practice. The biggest news involved wide receiver Tim Carter, who sat out practice with a tight hamstring. Carter was busy jogging and playing catch with a trainer in the mean time.
- Priest Holmes Leap: Remember when Priest Holmes was healthy a few years ago, and was known for making crazy dives into the end zone on a regular basis? The Browns weren't going to take things that far today, but they did work on drills where running backs dive into the end zone. The backs were diving over trash cans and landing on a mat in the end zone. While Jamal Lewis and Jerome Harrison seemed to complete the drill fine, some of the youngsters on the roster didn't appear quite comfortable yet.

- Bulked Up: Maybe a little more bulk is just the thing that Jerome Harrison needed to be taken more seriously by the coaching staff. Harrison had a tremendous practice today behind the first- and second-unit offensive lines. Harrison took it the distance twice - once with each unit - behind strong blocks from the fullbacks and left side of the offensive line. On both occasions, he basically went in untouched. One negative though: he fumbled the ball at least once, possibly twice.
- Changing it Up: After is seemed like the Browns were slowly giving Joe Thomas more time with the first team and shifting Kevin Shaffer over to right tackle, the Browns mixed it up today. Most of the time, the Browns' first unit featured Shaffer at left tackle and Ryan Tucker at right tackle.
- Efrem Hill: We haven't heard much from Efrem Hill in camp, but he had a big day today. Hill did a fine job making catches while keeping his feet in bounds near the sidelines. He also made a nice over-the-shoulder reception from Ken Dorsey over Daven Holly.

- Daily Wilson: Maybe Wilson is getting the message finally, because these reports are starting to get positive. After making a few touchdown receptions yesterday, Wilson made some great catches today, including an instance where he came back to the ball on a pass from Frye. If Tim Carter's injury becomes anything serious, then Wilson is clicking at the right time.
- Don't Neglect Josh: Don't forget about Joshua Cribbs just yet, after hearing about Wilson and Hill. Cribbs was the person to take Carter's spot in the lineup today, and he looked fine with the exception of one miscommunication with Frye. Cribbs also worked on practicing as a gunner on kick returns.
- Expecting More: Sure, Braylon Edwards has the potential to be the best wide receiver on the team. The drops need to stop if he wants to live up to that billing; another poor day for Edwards considering he was a high first-round draft pick two years ago.
- Iffy Again: No one is leaping ahead in the competition at quarterback still, as the same old stories continue. Derek Anderson bulleted a nice pass to Kellen Winslow in double- or triple-coverage for his highlight of the day. Frye's highlight was an "underthrown" ball that Wilson made a nice adjustment on.
- Set in Stone: After another great day of practice, the Browns secondary on August 11th should feature Eric Wright and Leigh Bodden at the corners, and Sean Jones and Brodney Pool at the safeties. Pool and Wright are exceeding expectations in camp. With the second unit, Justin Hamilton will fill one of the backup roles without question.
- Flip a Coin: We may not be able to read much into who starts at QB against the Kansas City Chiefs in a little over a week. Romeo Crennel stated that he may night announce the decision until gameday, and that it won't necessarily have a bearing on who is the favorite at the time.
- Big Men: When Ted Washington and Shaun Smith are on the defensive line at the same time, it's a sight to see in terms of size. The combination was able to do a decent job against our running game, and they were not the men that allowed Harrison to walk all over them.
- Baxter Update: In case you're wondering, Gary Baxter is still doing individual drills only. He has not joined the regular defensive guys yet.
