Gus Johnson & Steve Tasker |
At least we'll have the pleasure of having Gus Johnson announce this game. Even if the game is meaningless, I can already hear Johnson screaming, "Gradkowski...TO EDWARDS! WOW!!!", for a simple 15-yard completion. I'm not doing a positional preview today, because it's not fair to try and compare the Browns with a Steelers' second- or third-string. I would expect Ben Roethlisberger to play one or two series before leaving and getting ready for the postseason. With the Steelers' depth in Byron Leftwich at backup, our defense will still have their hands full.
There are plenty of other games this week that have playoff implications though, which will still make it an entertaining football week. If you live in the Cleveland area, these are the games you'll see today:
- Cleveland vs. Pittsburgh (1 PM on CBS)
- NY Giants vs. Minnesota (1 PM on FOX)
- Miami vs. NY Jets (4 PM on CBS)
- Dallas vs. Philadelphia (4 PM on FOX)
- Denver vs. San Diego (8 PM on NBC)
There is another game worth paying attention to in the box scores -- the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. the Baltimore Ravens. For the Ravens, if they win, "they're in". I would love nothing more than to see the Jaguars upset Baltimore and cost them their playoff spot.
FINAL PREDICTION: Pittsburgh Steelers 24, Cleveland Browns 14.
The Steelers' second stringers have a lot of fire in them, and Heinz Field will still be full of fans eager to see the Steelers take out a division rival. The final score doesn't matter though, as we should all consider it a win that it will [should] be Romeo Crennel's final game as our head coach.

CBS sure has a blockbuster this week, as Ryan Fitzpatrick and the 2-12 Cincinnati Bengals take on Ken Dorsey and the 4-10 Cleveland Browns in the Battle of Ohio. That's a fitting name for this game, because when you look at the NFL Distribution Maps this week, Ohio is just about the only state that'll painfully get to watch this game. Truth be told, I'm sure most football fans in Ohio would rather have our game blacked out so that we could see the Pittsburgh Steelers battle the Tennessee Titans for the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
At least Marvin Lewis has looked and sounded more like he cares about winning. Romeo Crennel is just playing the season out with little to no enthusiasm until he is fired. Against the Bengals though, perhaps our offense will look a little bit better and scrape out a victory.
Let's start off this week's preview with the overall team statistics thus far...

| CINCINNATI BENGALS | Position | CLEVELAND BROWNS | ||
| Fitzpatrick's first start this year was against Cleveland: 1 TD vs. 3 INTs. | QB | Unlike the past two weeks, Dorsey should have more time to stay in the pocket and deliver a throw. | ||
| Cedric Benson is averaging 3.1 yards a carry, and Chris Perry is averaging 2.6 yards a carry. Yikes! | RB | If Jamal Lewis wants to have a 100-yard game this season, this will be his last chance to do it. | ||
| Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, and Chris Henry outweigh our only threat in Edwards. | WR | With Winslow and Heiden sidelined, will Martin Rucker receive some snaps in the passing game? | ||
| The Bengals' pitiful rushing average and how often Fitzpatrick has been sacked (37) in 11 games is pitiful. | OL | They have seemed worn down against tougher competition, but should be able to maul the Bengals. | ||
| Antwan Odom, a player we were interested in during the offseason, has just two sacks this season. | DL | Shaun Smith is inactive, so Louis Leonard will start in his place. | ||
| The Bengals aren't strong at linebacker either, but they weren't a particular weakness against the Redskins last week. | LB | I've been more impressed with the efforts of Jackson, Wimbley, and even McGinest the past several weeks early in games. | ||
| If Edwards wants more "respect", he better be able to catch the ball with how often he'll get open this week. | DB | I'm sold on our secondary: get Daven Holly healthy next year, and I'm comfortable. | ||
| The Bengals' Kyle Larson is averaging just 39.8 yards a punt. In comparison, Zastudil averages 44.9 yards. | ST | Will Cribbs' Pro Bowl snub motivate him to have a big return game? | ||
FINAL PREDICTION: Cleveland Browns 24, Cincinnati Bengals 13.
I think today will be another bland offensive approach, with Jamal Lewis getting the ball quite often. Unlike other games though, the Browns' offensive line will open up the holes for Lewis to run through, en route to his biggest day of the season. With high winds up to 50 MPH, do we really think Dorsey's passing game would be any better than it has been the past two weeks?

The only excitement I can imagine coming out of this week's game is whenever Joshua Cribbs lines up at quarterback. This isn't about "parity" in the National Football League. Much like last week, we are clearly overmatched. Ken Dorsey doesn't have a strong enough of an arm or the mobility necessary to beat the Eagles' defense. Although our defense has tackled better recently, Brian Westbrook should be able to run all over us.
We're already out of it, and I can't even get into this game because I know full well that Romeo Crennel will not play guys like Beau Bell and Martin Rucker. In other words, there is virtually nothing positive we can get out of this game, even if we win. Sure, it'd be nice to increment our win column by one. At the same time, we could thank Crennel for decrementing the value of our future draft picks.
Let's start off this week's preview with the overall team statistics thus far...

| Dorsey shouldn't be blamed for not executing -- he wasn't brought here to win games for us. |
QB | Donovan McNabb threw for 376 yards and 4 TDs the last time he faced Cleveland (2004). |
||
| Saying Jamal Lewis will "improve upon last week's performance" isn't saying much. |
RB | Brian Westbrook is utilized in many of the ways I envision Jerome Harrison being used. |
||
| Braylon Edwards, Donte Stallworth, and Steve Heiden isn't a horrible starting combination. |
WR | The Eagles have a decent group of young receivers, led by rookie DeSean Jackson. |
||
| The line is drained, but unfortunately we really don't have any young guys worth trying out. |
OL | While not as effective as the Titans' line, the Eagles still know how to get the job done. |
||
| Memo to Savage: we brought in Corey Williams to be effective -- not just to "be a healthy body". |
DL | Former fifth rounder Trent Cole is having another impressive season. Our first-round d-lineman don't even amount to anything.
| Please, please, can't we just try to move Kamerion Wimbley over to the other side for once? |
LB | The Eagles are ranked sixth in defending the run. |
||
| Our secondary played well again against the Titans -- can they bait McNabb into some picks? |
DB | Brian Dawkins and Lito Sheppard remain a core veteran duo the Browns are lacking.
| Cribbs for president. |
ST | The Eagles are fairly dynamic in the return game, thanks to DeSean Jackson on punts. |
||
FINAL PREDICTION: Philadelphia Eagles 27, Cleveland Browns 9.
The Browns' touchdown drought will continue, as the defense will again play tough early on but be worn down by our offense's inability to move the football. Also, if the Eagles' defense scores me 20 fantasy points today, I will somehow survive Buckeye Brad in the DBN Fantasy Football league!

The Browns' defense is giving up an average of 9.5 points a game over the past two weeks, but we've come away with two losses against teams not known for playing solid defense. Against the 11-1 Tennessee Titans, with an absolute machine in Albert Haynesworth anchoring the entire line of scrimmage, do the Browns even have a shot? Statistically, we shouldn't. However, the Browns have played neck-and-neck with teams like the New York Giants, Washington Redskins, and Indianapolis Colts, even when our offense was horrible in two of those games. With the quarterback play we've seen from Derek Anderson this season, to suddenly think that there will be some type of "dropoff" under Ken Dorsey is kind of laughable. Funny enough, this is just about the only week this season I haven't heard complaints about our quarterback situation, and that is a relief.
Now then, let's start off this week's preview with the overall team statistics thus far...

| Dorsey could manage the offense, but has not started in three years. | QB | Kerry Collins has revamped his career with solid veteran play. | ||
| Jamal Lewis is having a down year and should have a tough time inside. | RB | Chris Johnson ripped the Lions -- will he do the same to the Browns? | ||
| With Winslow out, the Browns lose a potential edge they could have had here. | WR | Although they are still seeking a No. 1 receiver, Justin Gage is close to being that. | ||
| They'll have their hands full against a bull-rushing Titans defensive line. | OL | Kerry Collins has been sacked just seven times this year, and he's not a mobile guy. | ||
| The Browns have Shaun Rogers. | DL | The Titans have Jevon Kearse, Kyle Vanden Bosch, and Albert Haynesworth. | ||
| The tackling has been better, but that may deteriorate today against a quick Chris Johnson. | LB | Keith Bulluck would be a nice addition to the Browns defense. | ||
| McDonald and Wright have played well the past several weeks. | DB | The Titans are known more for stopping the run, but they are ranked fourth in pass defense. | ||
| Will Joshua Cribbs be less of a factor...because he's playing QB? | ST | Titans kicker Rob Bironas is 14-of-17 on field goals this year...and that's just from the 40-49 range! | ||
FINAL PREDICTION: Tennessee Titans 20, Cleveland Browns 7.
The Titans can blow out teams, but that is not what they are about. They are about getting ahead and maintaining that lead with an efficient offense and shutdown defense. This game could be 13-7 in the fourth quarter, with the Titans putting together a long drive late to put the nail in the coffin. I know I said it probably wouldn't be wise to play Joshua Cribbs as quarterback often, but deep down inside I would still love to see it.

The Cleveland Browns' chances for the playoffs are gone, but their opportunity for vengeance remains. Last year, the Indianapolis Colts failed to give an effort in Week 17 against the Tennessee Titans, thereby eliminating the Browns from playoff contention. Whether that means something to you or not, it plays a factor in the emotion of today's game. Maybe not for the players, but for some fans, it does.
Derek Anderson will get the start for the Cleveland Browns after Brady Quinn's season-ending injury last week. The fans at the stadium could boo with every misthrow, but I hope they don't unless it truly is a horrible effort by Anderson. We still need to try to provide a home-field advantage -- it happened against the Giants, so why not against the Colts?
FINAL PREDICTION: Indianapolis Colts 27, Cleveland Browns 20.
Without Bob Sanders, almost anybody can score against the Colts' defense. However, the Colts' offense is back in sync, and with that, Peyton Manning is brilliant at chewing up clock time. By keeping our offense off the field enough, the Colts will come away with the victory.

When a fellow SB Nation writer actually picks the Cleveland Browns to win, you know you're in good shape. Over at Battle Red Blog, our Houston Texans affiliate, Tim has picked the Browns to come away victorious, 30-24. The over/under is high for this game -- at 50 -- because both teams have major issues in the secondary. Besides hoping for a Browns win this week though, there are several other games we'll want to keep our eyes on in terms of playoff potential. Our division hopes are gone, but hope still remains for a wildcard, believe it or not. Without further adieu, here is a "best-case scenario" for Cleveland today:
- Philadelphia vs. Baltimore: The Ravens are coming off a big loss against the New York Giants. I projected them to be swept by the NFC East during the second half of the season, and I'll bank on that trend continuing today. The Eagles were embarrassed last week by finishing in a tie against the Bengals, but they still know how to get after the quarterback. Joe Flacco will be rattled at the right time to allow the Eagles' defense to capitalize.
- New England vs. Miami: We need...the Patriots to win this game. Why? Chances are, one of these two teams are going to take one of the wildcard spots. If Miami wins, I think the Patriots have enough experience to win the rest of the season, causing both wildcard spots to come out of the AFC East. But, if the Patriots take care of business today, I think Miami will fade off a little -- enough for the Browns to at least have a shot at catching them.
- Indianapolis vs. San Diego: This is a real important game. We've already picked up wins against wildcard hopefuls in Jacksonville and Buffalo. The Colts are in a whole different league compared to those teams, but if the Colts lose to San Diego and we defeat Houston, we would control our own destiny in terms of owning a tiebreaker over them. One thing to note is that the Chargers have been a very good home team the past couple of seasons. I'm picking the Colts to win, but it's clear we need to cheer for San Diego.
Now that we know what else we need to pay attention to around the league, let's see what the Browns need to do against the Texans, starting off this week's preview with the overall team statistics thus far...

|
Quarterback
Sage Rosenfels can provide that spark when his team is behind, but as a starting quarterback, he is way too mistake prone. Rosenfels last played against the Browns in relief back in 2005 -- a game in which he was 5-of-10 for 14 yards and 2 interceptions. I'll pass on him and take Brady Quinn in a second. Quinn won his first career game last week against the Bills on the road, but he suffered a fracture on the tip of his index finger. The odds are suddenly higher for Derek Anderson to play in this week's game, but that shouldn't be a negative in terms of our chances of winning. |
|
Running Back
This game will be a great gauge of Lewis' progress since last year (or lack thereof). Last year, Lewis ran all over the Texans at home for 139 yards and a touchdown. With Jerome Harrison and Jason Wright banged up after Monday's game against the Bills, Lewis' workload might reach the 20-carry mark for the first time in several weeks. Houston fans have been very pleased with rookie running back Steve Slaton, who is currently averaging 5.1 yards per carry on the year. Veteran Ahman Green has also returned the past few weeks in limited action and ran the ball successfully. The Browns will need to bring the same type of closing defense they had against the Jaguars earlier this season to have any shot at stopping Houston's ground game. |
|
Receiver
Technically, both receiving groups should have field days today. On the Texans' side, Andre Johnson's production has dropped tremendously since Rosenfels took over for Matt Schaub. Johnson has only topped 66 yards in his past three games, with only one touchdown during that stretch. Last year, the Browns -- Brandon McDonald in particular -- held Johnson to 3 catches for 37 yards. The Texans aren't all about Johnson though, as receiver Kevin Walter and tight end Owen Daniels present much more of a threat than anybody the Bills had on their roster last week. Braylon Edwards, despite dropping a few passes last week, showed some solid chemistry with Brady Quinn and will be looking for redemption again this week. Kellen Winslow will play with a sprained shoulder. |
|
Offensive Line
Whether it was Brady Quinn's fault, the running backs' fault, or Hank Fraley's fault, something needs to change this week to ensure that Quinn doesn't see free blitzers right up the middle several times. He cannot risk another "hit" on his finger. What was impressive last week was the offensive line's ability to clear out for Jerome Harrison's touchdown run. The Texans' offensive line has come a long way since the horrific days of David Carr being the most-sacked quarterback in the league. Still, the Browns have the favorable advantage of having Shaun Rogers creating pressure in the face of an erratic quarterback. |
|
Defensive Line It'll be another great matchup in Part II of Joe Thomas vs. Mario Williams. Williams is a better player this year than he was last year, but the part that will make him more dangerous is when the Texans line him up at other positions. The Texans will also see the return of second-year defensive lineman Amobi Okoye. Although he hasn't put up productive statistics, he helps the Texans' interior defense up front. The Browns will be without Shaun Smith this week, again limiting our depth. Maybe we'll get a further look at rookie Ahtyba Rubin, who had a decent game last week against Buffalo. |
|
Linebacker
We'll say hello again to former Browns linebacker Kevin Bentley today. I don't really know if I'd take him over any of the guys we have now, but I don't imagine him having any special impact on the outcome of today's game. That might be a different story of linebacker DeMeco Ryans, who has started playing up to par again after being hampered by an ankle injury earlier this season. Chaun Thompson, mostly a special teams player, also plays for the Texans. The past several weeks, I've been a little more impressed by the effort that veteran Willie McGinest has been giving (though he is still having a difficult time, like the rest of our defense, at "finishing" a play). One interesting thing about today's game: Beau Bell is ACTIVE. Does that mean anything? We shall see... |
|
Secondary
Texans fans have not been pleased with the performance of their secondary. For the Browns, Eric Wright has done a tremendous job most of the season -- he's not making as many "plays" over the past several weeks, but he has been keeping his man's receptions to a minimum. |
|
Special Teams
Andre Davis hasn't presented many problems for opposing teams on kick returns this year. With that said, the Browns will need to watch out for Texans punt returner Jacoby Jones. He has two punt returns for touchdowns this season. Texans kicker Kris Brown is also 14-of-14 on field goals this year, including 5-of-5 on kicks between 40-49 yards. Phil Dawson has been as automatic as you can get as of late, especially on deep kicks from beyond 50 yards. Both teams have high explosiveness on special teams -- it'll be an interesting to see how much of an impact that has on today's game |
FINAL PREDICTION: Cleveland Browns 34, Houston Texans 21.
We had the Ravens in position for this type of win at home. We had the Broncos in position for his type of win at home. This week, we'll have the Texans in position for this type of win, and hold on. Houston has been a horrible road team -- they haven't won on the road in over a year now.
This is the official gameday topic for the Cleveland Browns in Week 12 as they take on the Houston Texans. All comments regarding the game should be posted in this topic. Enjoy the game, and GO BROWNS!!!

Horrible MNF Trio |
I had a much nicer introduction and preview written up for this game, but apparently my clicking of the save button didn't work properly, because it was gone when I came back to it.
After losing twice within a span of five days when having multiple-possession leads in the second half of games, the Cleveland Browns have had awhile to regroup. In essence, it ends up being a second bye week for the team. If our record had been better than 3-6, that might have meant something. Instead, we're just hoping that Brady Quinn will play well again and lead the Browns to victory. Let's get right into this week's preview with the overall team statistics thus far...

Quarterback
The Bills have not seen an A+ performance out of Trent Edwards this year. The former third-round draft pick started off the season managing games well, but he has not been very effective the past three weeks. During that stretch, Edwards has thrown 2 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Brady Quinn definitely has more upside overall, but this will be his first road start of the season. To be fair, I can't rank him as a superstar just yet. |
|
|
Running Back
One of the bigger disappointments this season at the running back positions has to be Marshawn Lynch. His season has been very similar to that of Jamal Lewis' -- several "ok" games, but he has not reached the 100-yard mark or thrived against division opponents. When the Bills needed him most the past two weeks against the Jets and Patriots, he has combined for 62 yards on 23 carries on the ground. The Browns need to work in Jerome Harrison on a more consistent basis; let's see if Romeo Crennel holds true to his word. |
|
|
Receiver
This was supposed to be a breakout season for WR Lee Evans, and he has quietly posted some fair statistics, still averaging an astounding 18.9 yards per catch this season. Maybe I'm off on this, but while fans around the league know that Braylon Edwards is having a down season, they'd probably project that his stats are still higher than Evans. That is not the case. Beyond Evans though, the Bills have the same problem they've had the past several years: there aren't any go-to-guys beyond him. Quinn established a solid relationship with Kellen Winslow and Donte Stallworth last week, and has an extra week of practice under his belt in working with them. |
|
Offensive Line
The news has been better for left guard Eric Steinbach, although there isn't a definite word on his status tonight. The Bills improved their offensive line in the offseason and their ranking might have been higher had they not been part of a three game losing streak. Both teams are pretty even at blocking the run, but the Browns excel when it comes to protecting the passer. |

Defensive Line Corey Williams' shoulder has him listed as questionable again. Sooner or later, I'm definitely due on an article about how Williams has been a complete bust thus far. The Bills will still be without outstanding pass rusher Aaron Schobel on Monday Night, a big break for Brady Quinn. For the second week in a row, Quinn shouldn't feel the pressure too much. |

Linebacker
Big change at the linebacker position this week: Shantee Orr is going to see some playing time. With that said, it only makes sense that rookie fourth-rounder Beau Bell will probably be inactive again. For the Bills, Kawika Mitchell and Paul Posluszny are two players I'd like the Browns to get their hands on, if we had the appropriate defensive system. The Bills aren't particularly lights out at linebacker, but they are a healthier and better-tackling unit that Denver was. |

Secondary
Cleveland's secondary has taken major steps backwards the past two weeks, but they are ones that we can recover from. Really, we've only been burned late in games -- hopefully Mel Tucker, being a defensive backs specialist, will find a better rotation by throwing Travis Daniels and Mike Adams into the mix more often. |

Special Teams
Joshua Cribbs is back to the point where he can return a kick the distance every time he touches the ball. The Bills have a nearly equally dangerous returner in Roscoe Parrish, but like Cribbs earlier this season, Parrish is sort of in a "dry" spell period. Phil Dawson had two tremendous kicks in a snow bowl last season -- I think he'll be ready for some chilly weather in Buffalo. |
FINAL PREDICTION: Cleveland Browns 20, Buffalo Bills 17.
The kiss of death again, right? Had the Bills not looked so bad the past three weeks, I would've taken the Bills in this matchup. On the season though, Cleveland has never really played horrible football after the first three weeks. We beat a Jacksonville team on the road when they were on the same exact type of slump that Buffalo is on right now.
Quinn played a game last week, looking like he was managing a game plan. This week, he'll mentally be ready to score quicker and execute more often down the field in case he needs to keep up the scoring in a shootout.
This is the official gameday topic for the Cleveland Browns in Week 11 as they battle the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. All comments regarding the game should be posted in this topic. Enjoy the game, and GO BROWNS!!!

Official Week 11 Sunday Discussion Thread
This is the second Sunday in a row without Cleveland Browns football. I like the prime time games, but I also like the traditional football Sundays.
Nonetheless, if you are living in the Cleveland area, here are the games you can watch today:
- Baltimore vs. NYG - 1:00 PM on CBS (Gumbel & Dierdorf)
- Chicago vs. Green Bay - 1:00 PM on FOX (Buck & Aikman)
- San Diego vs. Pittsburgh - 4:15 on CBS (Nantz & Simms)
- Dallas vs. Washington - 8:15 on NBC (Michaels & Madden)
That's a pretty good lineup of games to watch. I'm fully aware that the Browns are on their last legs in the playoff race, but if you are interested in potential scenarios, we definitely need the Ravens and the Steelers to lose this week. Here's to hoping the Giants take care of business as usual and the Chargers exploit the Steelers' situation at quarterback.
