2007 NFL Draft - Browns Select BRADY QUINN

Height: 6-4
Weight: 227
40-Time: 4.80
College: Notre Dame
Level: Senior
With the 22nd overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys...trade their pick to the CLEVELAND BROWNS! As soon as that happened, every fan in the world knew what it meant: the Browns were going to welcome quarterback Brady Quinn to the Browns organization. Just think about the concept: I had strongly been against taking Quinn with the third overall pick in the draft, because I was in love with Joe Thomas. Some fans thought Thomas was our guy, but many others wanted Quinn as our quarterback of the future. In the end, we got BOTH of them! How is that even possible, when it was doubted that Quinn would have any chance of falling past the Miami Dolphins at No. 9?
Of course, trading Quinn comes with a price. The Browns had to give up our second-round pick in this year's draft, as well as our first-round pick in next year's draft. That sounds costly, but if you ask experts around the league, I'm pretty sure they'll all say that the Browns struck gold. Granted, I still wasn't 100% high on getting Quinn, but I have no qualms about Phil Savage getting Quinn at this position. Here is some scouting information on Quinn:
Although it may have seemed like Brady Quinn's production dropped off a little in his final season at Notre Dame, he had a career high in passing touchdowns with 37. The best part about Quinn could be that he would already be prepared mentally for the NFL. Charlie Weis took Quinn under his wing, much like he did with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Quinn can do just about anything you could ask for in a quarterback. He was the clear leader of the Fighting Irish's offense, seldom threw interceptions, and faced tough competition on a weekly basis. His arm strength is definitely adequate for the NFL, his mechanics are fundamentally sound, and he has a knack for knowing when to take off and run despite not having the greatest speed. Showed unbelievable improvements from his sophomore year to his junior year.Although he threw a career high in touchdowns during his senior year, some people feel that he didn't quite live up to expectations. Many people pegged him as the Heisman Trophy winner before the season began, but some early season struggles cost him and Notre Dame a shot at the National Championship. He only threw three interceptions, but his completion percentage went down three percentage points in his senior year due to some accuracy issues. Although Charlie Weis' system seemed to work well for Quinn, he may underestimate the capabilities of running that system against tougher competition in the NFL.
Overall, there aren't too many concerns for Quinn. He was originally thought of as the No. 1 quarterback to be taken this season, but now he may fall into the same boat as Matt Leinart did last year where a big and fast quarterback is taken ahead of him in JaMarcus Russell. Most teams would love to take Quinn and name him their franchise quarterback if given the opportunity.
I'd have to imagine that this will spell the end of Charlie Frye's run as our starting quarterback. Unless the Browns trade up again, our next pick will be in the early part of the third round.
Please leave comments in regards to your thoughts of this pick, just as you did with Thomas.

If the Browns have a horrible year though in 2007, the Dallas Cowboys will be the team that looks really smart next season.

Re: 2007 NFL Draft - Browns Select BRADY QUINN
That best adequately describes my reaction.
I wanted the Browns to take Quinn, but I completely understood why they took Thomas. I was content, but at the same time, a bit sullen.
When the Cowboys' clock went below two minutes, I knew something was going on, and I prayed that it was the Browns' doing. I literally jumped up and down when they announced that the Browns were on the clock.
Is it possible for the Browns to have had a better first round? I don't think so. We got the OT our line desperately needs and a quarterback with definite franchise QB potential. I couldn't be more elated.
At the same time, I feel for Troy Smith, because there's absolutely no chance for him to be a Brown. But all's fair in love, war, and the NFL.

I saw three things (cpu draft tracker, Sirius radio, Browns chat room) all change from the Dallas logo to the Browns logo all at once, and I couldn't believe it. Unbelievable round...

Great work, Browns!
I think it's a great draft so far for the Browns - I also had concerns picking Quinn with the 3rd pick, probably due to the fact that many 1st-Rd. QB picks have not panned out, in addition to the fact that Couch didn't develop as expected (but I think most would agree that Quinn is a better overall QB prospect than Couch was,) but to get him at #22 could be an outstanding value pick, regardless of the trade cost (which was somewhat high, but reasonable.)
I felt sorry for Quinn as he fell down the draft board; I was very happy when the Browns traded back up to get him. I think virtually everyone at Draft HQs was too.
To get him AND Thomas, who most consider the best OL in the draft - I don't see how the draft experts could give the Browns anything lower than an A- at worst, regardless of what happens from here on out. I'm hopeful they both develop (there are no guarantees after all; look at Robert Gallery a few years ago for Oakland, but hopefully Thomas delivers,) but right now, it's a very exciting draft for the Browns. Keep up the great work! :-)

Re: 2007 NFL Draft - Browns Select BRADY QUINN
On a side note, the Ravens were supposedly about to trade up to get Quinn. They were actually on the phone with him when the trade went down. From the interview I saw with him, he's about as happy and humble as you could ever hope for in a player.
Now I just have to ask what are the odds that both end up getting hurt before the first game?

Watch though: the Ravens will find a way to take Troy Smith after a couple of rounds have passed by.

I was surprised BAL was interested in him at
Hello everyone,
I heard CLE, BAL, and KC (or was it CHI - don't remember) who were interested in trading up for Quinn; I could see CLE and KC (just like I could see either JAC or DAL taking him, as well as the Bears,) but Baltimore didn't come to mind right away, but when you stop to think about it, it does make sense. Boller hasn't developed to the extent they would have liked, and McNair isn't young anymore, so yes, Quinn going to BAL would have made sense. Fortunately, that won't happen now. :-)
As for Smith, would BAL go for him or would they go for one of the more coveted QBs (I don't know their names off the top of my head, but the one from LSU, John "something" I think, Edwards from Stanford, or Stanton from MSU)? How soon will they address their future QB situation?

Peterson's injury history & upright running
Hello everyone,
I know GMs knew about his injury for some time and they still rated him very highly, but I wonder how often he'll be injured throughout his career.
I also read a day or two ago that he doesn't have the downhill or elusive speed that a back like Eric Dickerson had, so while he would have been a solid pick, I think he would have been a high reward/high risk pick due to his past injuries and his propensity for more injuries due to his upright running style.
I'm not sure, but isn't there another quality running back or two that could be picked up in the third round or late second round (if the Browns trade up again) - I think his name is Michael Bush, though I think he's coming off an injury as well?

Re: 2007 NFL Draft - Browns Select BRADY QUINN
I have seen this posted a few times today, that we gave up too much by trading our 2nd round this year and 1st next year. In reality, what we did was tade out 1st next year to move up 14 spots. We still have two picks, just both are in the first round.
Now the rationale behind the pick next year works both ways for us. If we end up stinking up the joint this year and the pick is Top 5, Dallas has to pay the top $$ to sign that pick next year, not us. Since we have Bentley, Steinbach, and now Thomas' salaries eating up the cap, another top 5 salary would have hamstrung us in FA. If the pick ends up 10-16 or so, that means we actually finished closer to .500, which is a very positive thing.

Another solid pick!
Eric Wright seems to be a solid pick as well, especially for a late-second round pick, though with some risk due to character questions.
Nice work Chris - you called it right here, outside of the third round part. :-)
If the draft experts don't give the Browns at least an A-, if not an A, something's wrong - I don't see what they can't like about this draft. Yes, they gave up some picks, but the Browns have "played" the other way of keeping their picks and adding extra picks for most of the years they've drafted since they returned in 1999 and where has it gotten them - one winning season and one postseason appearance. At some point, you have to take a chance, pay the price, and go for the "impact talent" that is out there - I'm glad to see Savage do that, and hopefully, it will work out for the best for the Browns - nice job Savage and company! Keep it up on Sunday!
Just my 2 cents. :-)

Re: 2007 NFL Draft - Browns Select BRADY QUINN
Go and listen to the press conference that Savage and crennel gave after the first day of the draft.
Savage said that it was Quinn's goal to be the 1st player drafted, and secondly to be drafted by the Browns. Why does Browns' fan care what Quinn's goals are ? Browns fan just wants a winner.
Savage said that they were trying to trade up from their 36th pick in the 2nd round to get Quinn once he started dropping. Savage said that he felt the best fit was between the 14th and 22nd picks. He went on to say that if Quinn slipped beyond that pick, that it would be difficult to make a deal because it would be hard to justify trading next year's #1 to move up from the 36th spot to say, the 28th spot.
So Savage apparently justified his trading up to get Quinn by giving Dallas next year's #1 and this year's #2 to select Quinn at #22. That makes no sense.
If the Browns would not have made the trade with Dallas, and he continued to fall further down, yet the Browns truly think Quinn is better than any other QB coming out next year, then they'd have been willing to trade next year's #1 to move up from 36th to even 32nd or 33rd, if necessary.
Why state that if he fell past 22nd that it wouldn't make sense to trade up ? It's flawed logic. I don't get it. It shows that Savage & team doesn't have that much confidence in Quinn but it was a feel good story because he's a local guy who wants to play for the Browns = it sells tickets.
What a bunch of baloney.
I hope the kid turns out to be successful for the Browns, but Savage showed his true reason for trading up - selling tickets.
Savage is taking a flier that Quinn turns out to be the guy when it's clearly evident that the Browns have more pressing holes than the QB position.

A. Qb is not one of the most pressing needs on the field or
B. Last year's 15 TDS and 25 INTs from our QBs gives you adequate hope that we are fine at the position

Re: 2007 NFL Draft - Browns Select BRADY QUINN
They obviously need a better O-line, which they've addressed to some degree with the additions of Steinbach and Thomas.
They also need a better running attack, where Lewis should help; but he's only signed for one year, and he's up in age. They could use a young RB.
They also need help at run defense.
I'm not totally against the drafting of Quinn, but Savage's logic in the press conference made no sense. He essentially said that if Quinn continued to drop, that the price of next year's #1 and this year's #2 was too steep a price to pay to move up from #36 to #28.
I think they paid a dear price for Quinn. I hope he works out to be the man.
