Tim Couch Return Attempt: Part 5

Every year, we hear a story stating that Tim Couch will be attempting a return to the league. Then, after a few weeks or months following that notion, a report states that Couch was forced to have another surgery. That won't happen again - this time, it's either do or die for Couch, who feels that he's finally ready to return to the NFL.

In the article, Couch is reportedly up to 245 pounds and has lowered his body fat percentage from 13 percent to five percent. Couch has been rehabbing his surgically repaired shoulder in Miami, and has been "pain free for the better part of the year."

"I know it's cliché, but I'm doing it for the love of the game. It's what I love to do, it's who I am," Couch told 27 SportsFirst. "I want to walk away on my terms."

Now, over at AOL's Fanhouse under the Browns' section, writer Ryan Wilson made a comment that befuddled me. After double checking just to be sure, I am confident that Wilson just gave most of the credit for the Browns' postseason berth in 2003 to Kelly Holcomb instead of Couch. Here's the excerpt:

Well, nobody can call Tim Couch a quitter. The former first-overall pick has been out of football since 2003, and during his rocky five-year career, managed to throw 64 touchdowns, 67 interceptions, and will the Browns to 26 wins (though, to be fair, Kelly Holcomb should get most of the credit for Cleveland's 9-win season in '03). That's all water under the bridge, though, because Couch wants another shot.

2002-2003 Season (Browns' Playoff Year)

Tim Couch's Record: 8-6
Kelly Holcomb's Record: 1-1

Granted, I'm not saying that Couch is the reason we made the playoffs that year, but there's absolutely no way that Holcomb should even get half of the credit for a nine-win season after only starting two games. Time for some more extended research next time, Ryan.

i cant stand holcomb. i would rather have couch then holcomb anyday. if it wasnt for butch davis couch would never have to make a comeback.

Na, that's not necessarily true. Couch has had a bad shoulder for years, and was likely playing through some of it during his time with the Browns. He inevitably needed surgery, and if he were still on the Browns, would likely have needed surgery every year still.
