Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal

Hold tight again Quinn; Anderson is coming back.
The Browns have signed Derek Anderson to a multi-year deal, according to the Associated Press. The signing came just a few hours after Anderson had become a RFA.

What does this mean? Well, for one, you can end the "automatic" talks of us getting a 1st and 3rd-round pick for Anderson, because other teams can no longer sign him. And, assuming we've given Anderson money guaranteed, I highly doubt that we'll be looking to trade him this year.

I'll be updating this post as more details come along.

Update [2008-2-29 12:15:49 by ChrisPokorny]: Anderson's deal appears to be around 3 years for $24 million with about $12-$14 million guaranteed.

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
Yeah it sucks, Derek Anderson has ruined draft weekend for me.  If he has another year like this year, I will live with it...

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
I really hope Savage can fill the holes through F.A.  I still think we need two LB's and two DL.  This is a deep LB draft, no real gamebreakers but very deep.

Maybe Frank Okam slips to the third round?  He is a future NT.

I could not be more suprised by DA resigning...

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
They upped the deal when they said theu wouldn't which is unlike Savage. I honestly think there is a trade in the works right now...just something to think about

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
If I am recalling correctly, if we trade him now, his entire signing bonus would count against this years cap which would mean a cap hit of nearly 12 million dollars, so I don't think he is getting traded...

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
To be fair though, Tony Grossi happens to agree with you...

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
Are you sure it's a 12 million dollar signing bonus? I just though it was 12 million guaranteed over 3 years...i havent read anything about a signing bonus

Unless guaranteed money and signing bonus are the same thing and I just dont know that, haha...

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
I just assumed that the guaranteed money in the deal was a signing bonus.  Your right it could be roster bonus money ect...

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
I would assume it is...4 million guaranteed each year with incentives that can reach around 24 million

But since a signing bonus hasnt even been mentioned, its making me wonder what is really going on

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
I'm OK with this deal. There was no guarantee we were gonna get an offer of picks. Don't forget, all the other GMs saw Anderson's performance in the Pro-Bowl, too.

I somehow think we haven't closed the door on getting draft picks out of our current QBs. We'll probably be having the same discussions this time next year.

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
Tony Grossi thinks there's more to the Derek Anderson situation than meets the eye.  He sounds as if he's expecting a trade and in my experience he's usually pretty accurate when predicting Front Office behavior.  I think it's also telling that there is no official announcement on the Browns website of the contract extension and it was being widely reported in the media at 10am.

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
Grossi has more information about visits the Browns have lined up, LaBoy which we already knew about and Stallworth, which I haven't seen mentioned here.  He also says more guys are coming in tonight and some tomorrow.  This user has his fingers crossed for Lance Briggs.

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
Its intriguing thinking that there could be more. But consider:
>> The Browns would only sign and trade if they thought they could get MORE than a 1st + 3rd, or if they wanted right of first refusal.

>> If Anderson knew someone else wanted him, why would he sign now and give the Browns the right of first refusal?

>> If someone else was willing to give up the picks for Anderson, why would they wait past the start of free agency to make an offer?

I'm not saying nothing is going to happen, but if it does, I will be awed by Savage.

For what it's worth (which I admit is not much), Don Banks at SI.com really likes both of the Browns big moves...

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
Apparently the browns are making some big announcement at 6:30.  It may just be the singing of DA is official, we'll see.

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
That we had signed DA to a 3 year extension and traded for Williams. So nothing we didnt already know.

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
MAJOR disappointment. I wanted the 1st and 3rd round pick. I think Quinn would've been fine this year. DA's late season collapse is a big concern. That money could have been used on other positions. This is terrible news.

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
Hmm...can't say I like this. Too much money for a guy who, while I like him, I don't see progressing much more than he did this year. Plus, with Quinn sitting there, just seem like a waste. But maybe I'm just bitter--I really wanted a first round pick to have a shot at Vernon Gholston or Sedric Ellis.

Re: Derek Anderson Signs Multi-Year Deal
I think Quinn will eventually be better than DA.  But, you gotta resign your Pro-Bowl QB. Three years is perfect, not locked in too long if they decide to go with Quinn. Plus, now there's injury insurance.  I love the draft too, but I think aquiring proven vets like the Browns have been doing in free agency is much safer than unproven rookies. Less exciting, but effective. Especially after the hauls in the past couple of drafts.
