BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?

According to MLive.com:

It has not been confirmed yet, but a league source said the Lions are very close to finalizing a deal that will send Shaun Rogers to the Cleveland Browns for veteran cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round draft pick.

Details are still sketchy, but the original trade that sent Rogers to the Cincinnati Bengals for a third- and fifth-round pick did not go through. Link

This would be a complete shock if it were true, and would be a huge gamble on Savage's part.

Rogers has been in trouble with the league already, so one wrong move will probably get him suspended for a year. Bodden was our "veteran" corner, and a damn good one too. However, if he does remain injury-riddled through his career and Brandon McDonald is just as good or better, the deal will work in our favor.

The weird part is that the Bengals offered a 3rd and 5th rounder. The Browns are supposedly giving up a 3rd rounder and Leigh Bodden. Does that mean Bodden in a sense is being treated as a 5th rounder?

Remember, the trade is not yet confirmed.

Update [2008-2-29 22:24:16 by ChrisPokorny]: More sources, including Tony Grossi of the Plain Dealer, are saying a deal is close. Grossi also reports that the Browns are trying to bring in Ravens linebacker Nick Greisen and Steelers linebacker Clark Haggans over the weekend for interviews.

I dont buy it.  Bodden is a 4th rounder at least.  But how about Andra and a 3rd (or 4th?) for Rodgers.  Regardless, if we land Rodgers our D-line is going to be stacked.  Smith, Rodgers and Williams as a front three with those linebackers will be nice.  Another linebacker and a wide out would be nice and turn this off-season around.  But man, no 1st, 2nd or 3rd round draft picks? egad.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
No first, second, or third round players will be weird. Although for outline's sake...

1st Round - Brady Quinn
2nd Round - Corey Williams
3rd Round - Shaun Rogers

That's a better draft in quicker time that we could've gotten probably.

Dude, this is getting silly. I pull crap like this in Madden, but in real life?

As long as he doesn't tap next year's picks.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
I don't know about giving up Bodden, with the 4-wide offenses some teams are using now, we need as many playable CBs as we can get (although this year's draft seems to be deep with good CBs).

If this is true, our front 7 could be silly-good, especially if we can get an upgrade to Peek at LOLB. This draft also seems to be deep with some good 'tweeners, so I hope Savage can work his magic.

Can you imagine if we unload Anderson for something like 1st- and 3rd- or 2nd- and 3rd- rounders, and sign LaBoy/Haggans/Stallworth?  We could be SCARY good.

I love this excitement.  I hope it is worth it.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
inm praying we trade anderson for some picks! I mean im glad we got who we got, but i love the draft and i love the offseason where we look at players we drafted and decide who will make an impact. doesnt look like we will have that many players to look at this year.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
AAAH.. I'm so conflicted. I'm stoked to see Rogers land with us, but worried about coughing up all these draft picks...and we still need to shore up the secondary.

Its awesome and terrible at the same time! I don't know what to do!

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
Draft picks take time to develop and time is something this defense does not have. By totally upgrading out defensive line it will take pressure off of our defensive backs, which I believe is why Savage was willing to pull the trigger on this one...Having a great pass rush, which this front 7 will have, will make the Wright/McDonald combo really good really fast. And who says we won't do something like sign Ty Law to a 2 year deal and help solidify the defensive backfield even more?

Plus, think about how many times you were yelling at Leigh Bodden this year becasue he blew a coverage or let a big play happen right in front of him...He really slipped this year, IMO

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
Yes, Bodden really did slip this year.  By the end of the year both of our rookie corners were playing better then he was.  Its really unfortunate to lose the depth at CB though.

Ty Law will be in Cleveland next year...I just have a gut feeling about this one.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
I don't really like to see Bodden go, but I love upgrading the DL. I'm not sure about Rogers, waiting on a report from my buddy who's a big-time Lions fan (poor guy), but I know he's huge and he has some talent, as Romeo would say.  And when a guy has some talent, then you can do some things. It's so great to have specific holes to fill, instead of every position being a hole.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
Pinch me.  Is this real?  Last year was a great start.  This year is amazing.  Savage could be a genius.  I don't think they trade Anderson... this year.  This could be a Brees/Rivers scenario all over again but we get to trade Anderson for picks.  And yes, I think Savage has played Madden a few times.

Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers
Well, since DET seems to be taking our offer over CIN's, I think they're saying that Bodden is better than a 5th rounder.

Can Romeo and a chance at the playoffs motivate Rogers?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
I think that Phil Savage has looked at the FA crop and draft and has decided that the best way to upgrade the defensive front seven is through trade.  I agree with him.

I love the trade if Shaun Rogers is in shape and behaves, and we get some more depth at the CB spot.

Who are our starting CB's?  Nickel?  Dime?  I like D. Holly, but as a nickel.  I would really worry if we started McDonald and Wright.

How much would Ty Law cost for a year?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
After waking up in the morning, this trade sounds better than it did last night in my head.

-Eric Wright is supposedly a star in the making.
-Brandon McDonald made some amazing plays last year.
-Leigh Bodden was slipping and had some injury concerns.

-The main thing we've all complained about, the defensive line, is all of a sudden our strongest unit on defense. We basically have two Pro Bowl-caliber talents in Rogers and Williams.
-Last year, I said that Robaire Smith was good, but was the type of guy that needed more help on the line in order to be at his best. That means that now, we already have the perfect DE for his side.
-Shaun Smith will rotate in with Rogers effectively.

Now, if we sign Calvin Pace, this will really complete the defensive package. I still wonder if my reach of saying the Browns should sign Ty Law (see my post from Thursday) will come true.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
I think that Calvin Pace is going to get way more money than he is worth, hopefully not from the Browns.  Names I would keep an eye on in the draft as OLB are;

Bruce Davis UCLA
Sir Daren Adams Mich St.
Brandon Miller UGA (Has amazing physical talents, hasn't quite put it all together though)
Marcus Howard UGA (Ran a 4.4 at combine)

Just a couple of ideas.  This draft is VERY deep at LB.  I would rather spend our FA dollars on WR and DB's.  Why not Leon Williams at OLB?  He is a little undersized, but he is a playmaker when he is on the field...

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
Well, maybe our secondary depth will come in-house in the form of Gary Baxter. He said he was close to coming back this last season. Add in another offseason to recuperate and who knows? Maybe he can  be the nickel. Either way, I think Savage is brilliant (Even though I'm already depressed that draft day won't be fun - I look forward to it all year).

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
With Ty Law's connections to Romeo from New England, I have to believe he's going to be in Cleveland, especially now...I'm definately in the same boat with you, Chris.

I also want to see us take Clark Haggans away from the Steelers...that'd be a great acquisition

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
IMO, Randall Gay from New England is a much better value. Law is old and probably going to be relatively expensive. Gay could be had at a multiyear deal at a nice price. He's only 25 to boot.

Per ESPN:

Gay is a restricted free agent with no compensation. He played in the first three games of the 2006 season before becoming injured and did not play the rest of the season. He is a good overall athlete for the position. He shows above average quickness, agility and balance. He has good overall height and average size. He shows good overall play speed for the position. He has shown a knack for being a solid off corner. He shows good instincts to break forward on the football. He has good overall ball skills. He does a good job of re-routing receivers from the press position. He has a good feel and is willing in run support, but he is not a physical player vs. the run. He will miss tackles on the edge and is not consistent to get the ballcarrier on the ground. His lack of physical play also shows up in the passing game. He can get out-muscled vs. bigger receivers in coverage. He has very good speed, but has been better as zone than man cover corner to this point in his career. He is an aggressive special teams player who has some value in that role when he is healthy. He is still young and has some upside to develop as a corner prospect but he will need to overcome his durability concerns.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
I agree 100%  It would be hard for me to believe they're going to go into 2008 with the cornerbacks they've got, that seems like improving the defensive line at the expense of the secondary, which wasn't lights out last year.   Hopefully they sign a Randall Gay or maybe a Jacque Reeves, just a veteran guy to help as a 2/3 corner.  They have to, right?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
I think so.

The cornerback FA class is pretty nice so there are some deals out there.

Reeves might be ok, but he was the Cowboys weakest corner last year so I'd like to aim a little higher to begin with.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
I have to say I am upset with the Rogers trade. Not only did he cost us Bodden but he lacks motivation to do anything other than eat. How the heck can anyone be a nimble 340 pounds?

And we still need Secondary help from somewhere. It won't be the draft.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
Peter King has reported that Leigh Bodden wanted a new deal, and with his injury history, I am glad the Browns got what they could for him.

Shawn Rogers can dunk a basketball at 340 LBS.  Sounds pretty nimble for me...

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 3, 2008 4:07 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
We don't need him to dunk a basketball. We need him to stop the run or deflect passes on every play, not just when he feels like it. He needs to turn about 40 pounds of fat into muscle. That will increase his endurance and keep him on the field.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
Rogers from what I have read typically is near a league leader in tipped passes and blocked kicks. If Crennel motivates him, it was a steal.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
Agreed. IF Crennel motivates him and IF he can get fit, he'll be worth it.
Huge ifs.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
Eveything thing in this league is an "if".  If Courtney Brown wasn't injuried every week etc.  Nothing in this league is a sure thing, but talent helps, and Shawn Rogers has a butt load of it...  I am glad the Browns were willing to take a chance on a talent like Rogers.  Talented DT in this league are extremely rare.  We have one now.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Browns Trade Bodden for Rogers?
It's not as if Rogers has been bad anyway. I'll take his production in exchange for the absolute debacle that Leigh Bodden had become. Both players needed a change of scenery and both got it. Best to Leigh, but the Browns won this one.
