Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth

According to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network, the Browns have signed WR Donte Stallworth to a deal. This came as somewhat of a surprise to me, because I heard earlier today that he was ready to visit Oakland.

Stallworth caught 46 passes for 697 yards and three touchdowns as part of a receving corps that included Wes Welker and Pro Bowler Randy Moss. Stallworth's best overall season was in 2005 when he caught 70 passes for 945 yards and seven touchdowns as a member of the New Orleans Saints.
I'll report more details as they come along.

PS -- I believe it's actually spelled Donte'

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
You're right, but I'm always frustrated that I don't have the accented "e" on my keyboard, so I just type it as is. Donté Stallworth. I believe I had the same issue with André Davis.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
No, it's not an accented e, it's an e followed by an apostrophe. Odd.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
Are you sure about that? While Wikipedia isn't always the most reliable, it lists him with the accented "e".

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
Hmm...I can't find a solid 100% answer. However, I still think it's accented, and that it's listed as an apostrophe on so many sites because they don't have the encoding on their pages to list the special e's.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
I love this pick-up...Gives us 3 solid WR's with the ability to get Cribbs in there when we feel like it. Also ensures we have two solid wideouts when Jurevicous retires after the season.

Phil and Romeo are making this team even better every minute...I feel like this will be the only significant offensive signing this year.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
alright this move is great for us and gives us flexibility.

so do u guys see any chance of us trading trvis wilson? maybe wilson and a few players to get back in an early round?

also, when did we get kevin kasper?

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
I think there is virtually no chance of us trading Wilson. It was almost considered a stretch by some people when we took him in the third round a few years ago, and we've yet to play him at all.

I don't think a team would even listen to us about a trade for him unless it involved swapping practice squad type players.

And, there aren't any players that we could trade right now that would get us back into the early round. The only way that'd happen is if we got rid of Anderson, Edwards, Winslow, or Wimbley, none of which we will do.

I think we signed Kasper about a week ago, along with some other guys, as a "practice team" team.

Rumored to be a 5 year 35 million dollar deal with only 10 million guaranteed.  Sounds good to me...

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
anyone have an educated guess on how much money we have left, cap-wise?

by ASP on Mar 1, 2008 7:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
On the OBR forums I read a fairly well thought out post that pondered our cap situation. Consensus estimate was that we have right around 14M in cap room left after all of our FA signings.  We still dont have alot of info about the signings this weekend so these were ballpark but seemed reasonable. Considering that we dont have a 1,2 or 3 to sign in the draft this is pretty awsome, maybe the FO can kick a little $$  Winslows way to keep him happy.

Folks were disussing this before some more info about the Rodgers trade has been coming out today. Looks like we aren't responsiable for his 1M dollar signing bonus.  PFT is stating that the situation with his bonus is why the trade with the Bengles fell apart.  If we aren't responsiable for his 1M then our situation might be even better.

I like the moves too.  hopefully they keep pace with the upgraded schedule and close the gap on the Steelers.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
This is a good signing by the Browns. Stallworth is not the number 1 type receiver a lot of people believe him to be--but this team doesn't need him to be that guy.  Stallworth is one of the fastest receivers in the league, and he is lethal with the ball after the catch.

Stallworth is a significant upgrade from Jurevicius.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
This is going to make Jurevicous even more of a threat I think, just because people will forget about him...He won't take as many snaps which will keep him fresh for the whole game.

Christmas came really early this year guys...

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
Even more so than adding a threat, the big thing that Stallworth gives us is more depth this year.

If Edwards, Winslow, or Jurevicius missed a game last season, Tim Carter would've been the next go to guy. Now, it'll be Stallworth and/or Jurevicius as the other guy, which is a significant upgrade.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
Whether it is Anderson or Quinn, lining up with Edwards, Stallworth and Winslow, and sometimes adding Jurevicius, should result in a very good pass offense.  If the O-line stays solid and these guys stay healthy, big ifs, I know, the Browns will be a high scoring team.

One thing I do like about Stallworth is that if you can play for Belichik, you can play for anybody.  It means you know how to play team, how to be part of a system.

The defensive additions are more intriguing.  I am not able to evaluate their impact.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
Yeah, but the entire AFC North has rough schedules.  The Browns need to worry about the division only, no matter what Mort thinks.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
Mortenson is also a know-nothing, speculating, moron.  He has no football background and tries to spin his opinion off as if it is some sort of scoop.  He has screwed up injury reports (Eli Manning) and front offense moves (Savage) for years.  I really believe he is a borderline dishonest journalist for what he reports as a rumor or substantive, when it is really just something that makes sense in his non-football head.  Anytime you see "ESPN's Chris Mortenson is reporting..." be very very skeptical.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
Well Peter King is pretty good.  Some interesting notes from his article;
Bodden, at $1.75 million in 2008, was as valuable to the team as the terminally inconsistent Rogers. But Bodden wanted more money. Lots more money. And Cleveland wasn't willing to pony up.

If this is true, I like the Rogers trade even more.  Bodden did not play well through many stretches, and if he wanted a raise, I am glad we got something for him.

The Browns plan to play Rogers at defensive end in the standard 3-4, and move him inside when they go to a four-man front.

This I wonder about.  I thought "Big Baby" was going to be our NT.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
I want to hear Bill Cowher say it as a little extra dig to Steelers fans :)

Is it just me, or for the second year in a row, did the Ravens, Bengals, and Steelers basically do nothing in free agency while the Browns have been brilliant?

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
The Bengals have made one move, to get their second choice to beef up the interior D line, while the Steelers have lost Fanacea.  The Ravens have been vewy, vewy quiet....  I'm not sure, but I think they had very little cap room to begin with.

The Browns, for the second year in a row, have moved decisively and quickly.  Props to Savage and Crennel.  Here's to a chance for them to stay out of the Jets' trap from last year.  Cheers.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that Darryl Blackstock is coming to visit with the Browns.  He has played in a 3-4 in college and last year with the Cards.

He was a super talent coming out of Virginia.  I think that he was misused in Arizona up until last year.  If the price is right, he would be a great pick-up IMO.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
Calvin Pace is no longer an option for the Browns according to PFT;
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Jets have agreed to terms with defensive end/linebacker Calvin Pace on a six-year, $42 million deal, with a whopping $22 million in guaranteed money.

A rush LB with 14 career sacks gets you 22 million guaranteed?  I don't understand what some teams are thinking.  Personally I am glad we did not pay out the nose for a player who has had one good year.

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
I don't see Donte' (good enough typing for y'all?) as necessarily being an upgrade over Joe Jurevicius, but as an upgrade at the receiver spot, period.  Unless you're going to line up Winslow in the slot as a WR and use Steve Heiden as the team's pure TE, WR was a slight weakness with only 2 proven players there - Edwards and Jurevicius.

Stallworth gives us 3 playmakers at WR, 2 with outside speed and JJ as the tall posession receiver who will go over the middle with confidence, and -just as importantly- know where the first down marker is and run a route PAST it.  Then do everything in his power to come down with the ball.

This move gives us, with Winslow, four legitimate threats to come down with the ball.  A very serious threat when in a spread offense.  Opens up the passing game even more.  Even in a normal formation, the constant threat should open up more holes for J Lewis.

I gotta like the move, along with the less questioned moves to beef up the line.  Hope they still have enough under the cap to sign a veteran DB and get more depth overall on the defense.  And on a related note, has anyone heard from Gary Baxter?

Re: Browns Sign WR Donte Stallworth
I agree. And also, what are the odds that we'll have another healthy season of both Edwards AND Winslow? It's needed depth if we are going to try to make the playoffs.
