Troy Smith Wants to Play Here

Why wouldn't a home-town quarterback want to play for the team he grew up watching? According to the Associated Press, Ohio State and Glenville QB Troy Smith promoted his wishes to play for the Cleveland Browns at Tuesday night's Greater Cleveland Sports Awards during a taped acceptance speech.

"Hopefully, I'll get a chance to represent you guys at the next level with the Cleveland Browns," said Smith.
I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll be saying just about every day until the draft: the Browns need to worry about more things than a quarterback. I am already completely sold on that fact that we should definitely not take Smith in the first or second round. That's not to say that Smith isn't good enough to be selected at those points, because I would probably have him going at some point of the second round. However, the "possibility" that people keep mentioning is to select Smith if he is still available in round three. Rather than wasting a draft pick on a quarterback that wouldn't even start for most of this season, shouldn't we focus on upgrading the offensive and defensive lines, something fans know need to be improved year after year?

Granted, looking back at least year's picks, none of our players beyond the second round besides Leon Williams made an impact. We have an early pick in the third round though, meaning if the chips fall our way, we would basically be getting a player valued near the end of the second round. For the past several years, I've had several offensive and defensive linemen that I had rated in the late-second round end up falling to the third round. Unfortunately, the Browns usually draft someone else there (Charlie Frye in 2005 and Travis Wilson last season). Wouldn't it have looked better if we had taken some offensive lineman instead, and been prepared to take a quarterback this year, with all of the surrounding tools already there?

Now, before I forget, the Arizona Cardinals hired our beloved Maurice Carthon yesterday to be their running backs coach this season. Carthon without question made some erratic play calls that forced the fans of Cleveland to run him out of town. For the record, the Browns (or Carthon for that matter) will have a shot at revenge next season, because our team will travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals at some point of the season.
