Devil's Advocate: The Browns Should Pass On Patrick Peterson

Patrick Peterson allowed a WR to catch a pass just to see what it felt like.

These are not necessarily my views, just the flip side of the coin.

Yes, you read that right, the Browns should pass on Superman.

  • In case you haven't heard, the Browns already have a young shut down CB, in the mighty Joe Haden. On the other side we have Sheldon Brown, AND we still hold the rights to Eric Wright. Say what you will about Eric Wright, but the guy had a bad year. Go back 16 months and we were all calling him one of the best young CB's in the NFL. I don't think he just started to suck, he is going to bounce back. That gives us three, great-to-good Cornerbacks. How many do we need? Is Cincy, Baltimore or Pittsburgh going to run out four great WR's? We can't afford to use our first rounder on another CB.
  • That brings up this little ditty, the Browns have no one to rush the passer. Guess who the top four sack leaders, career wise on the Browns roster right now are. Don't cheat and look, seriously guess. 1. Scott Fujita (22.5) 2. Matt Roth, assuming he is brought back next year (20.0) 3. Marcus Benard (11.0) 4. Sheldon Brown (7.0)! That's right, a CB is the Browns 4th most accomplished pass rusher right now. Anyone else wanna get drunk right now? How can we leave the first round of a "great DE" draft, with a CB!? It's a luxury we can't afford.
  • Peterson is massive. 6'1 222lbs. is far from the perfect size of a CB. It sounds great and he will look great in uniform, but is he quick enough to handle the little guys? The one's who cut on a dime and give big CB's fits? Sure we could move him to safety if he struggles, but who in their right mind uses a top six pick on a safety? Didn't we learn our lesson last season? We all wanted Eric Berry, but instead we waited until the second round and that looked pretty good to me. The downside to Peterson maybe isn't that daunting, but in a draft in which we need to get lineman, risking it on a CB isn't exactly what I call a good plan.
  • What good team uses high picks on Cornerbacks? Since 2005, here are the DB's that have been picked in the top 10: Pac-Man Jones, Antrel Rolle, Carlos Rogers, Donte Whitner, Michael Huff, LaRon Landry, Joe Haden and Eric Berry. Holy sh*t that is a list wrapped in fugly. Outside of Haden and Berry, is there anyone on that list you would call a good pick? I don't see one. Reason being is because DB's don't win you football games. Darrelle Revis, Champ Bailey, and Nnamdi Asomugha are the best CB's on the planet. Combined 0 Super Bowls. Why the hell is Patrick Peterson going to be any different?

When you take all the issues above, it becomes quite clear that the Browns will have to pass on Patrick Peterson. Joe Haden doesn't need a Robin, he needs a pass rush.
