Ben Roethlisberger and Travis Prentice. Both of them came from Miami of Ohio, but guess which player had an illustrious NFL career with the Cleveland Browns? That would be Prentice, otherwise known as, "Touchdown Travis," who set numerous NCAA Division I-A records. In his sophomore season of college, he rushed for 25 touchdowns. Even when his team's offense went pass-oriented in his senior season, he still put 17 rushing touchdowns up on the board.
What did Prentice do with the Browns and in the NFL? Pretty much nothing. Selected in the 3rd round of the 2000 NFL Draft, he was not much better than his "successor" James Jackson, who was listed as our No. 10 bust the other day. Prentice had a 3.0 yards per carry average in his rookie season with the Browns. Again, like Jackson, that type of production came behind a poor offensive line, but it is still a sorry average. He managed to put seven touchdowns on the board, but he was cut by the Browns after just one season. His NFL career did not go anywhere after that.
When you make a selection in the third round of the draft, you should anticipate them lasting on your club for more than one season. These are the type of things that made it impossible for this team to succeed in its early return years.
