With a good portion of the order for the 2013 NFL Draft set, the Cleveland Browns hold the 6th overall pick. On Sunday, I asked fans who they were interested in the Browns drafting.
With the previous regime focusing much of their 2012 draft on the offensive side of the ball (quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and right tackle), the majority of fans seemed to be interested in finding a defensive stud. Some of the suggestions included DE Damontre Moore, DE Bjoern Werner, OLB Jarvis Jones, and CB Dee Milliner.
Our draft affiliate, Dan Kadar from Mocking the Draft, posted their first mock draft now that the regular season is over. Out of those four defensive players recommended by fans, two of them -- Milliner and Moore -- were already off the board. Between Werner and Jones, Kadar decided to send Werner to the Browns:
6. Cleveland Browns - Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
After adding several pieces to their offense in this year's draft, the Browns could go heavy on defense in 2013. Cleveland needs help at all levels of the defense, other than tackle and middle linebacker. Werner is the best pure 4-3 defensive end in this scenario and he'd fit well in Cleveland. He's athletic enough to get around the edge, but strong enough to play the run in the physical AFC North. If the Browns like a cornerback, don't be surprised if they go in that direction to help opposite Joe Haden. An outside possibility could be Alabama guard Chance Warmack.
This is a tough one. The Browns' biggest free agent investment last offseason was in Frostee Rucker, and the platoon between he and veteran Juqua Parker was very stable this season. You're not going to replace Jabaal Sheard on the other side of the line. Rucker signed with Cleveland so that he wouldn't be a rotational player, but that's what he'd become with Werner drafted. The bigger need for the Browns right now seems to be Jones -- although Chris Gocong will attempt to make a return, the Browns lack a dynamic threat at outside linebacker.
Check out the rest of Dan's early mock and let us know what you think.
