With the 11th pick in the 2012 Dawgs By Nature Community Mock Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select...

David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

This selection and write-up was made by Brownie's Year:

Johnathan Martin got a good look at this spot. But with this pick the Chiefs select the best player available that suits their needs. And believe me, they have several. Claiborne and Richardson are off the board so the Chiefs go with the best guard to enter the draft in quite some time, David DeCastro. This kid has it all. He’s big and strong at 6'5" 315. Has quick feet with the ability to be an exceptional pulling guard. Ideal team leader. He also went to Stanford, so you know he’s a smart cookie. Selecting DeCstro at #11 is a "can’t miss" move for Kansas City. They have the opportunity to grab an amazing guard that can play at a Pro Bowl level for years to come.

Why select an offensive guard so high in the draft? Here’s why...

The Chiefs really struggled this past season when on offense. They were 15th in rushing, which isn’t that bad, but they only scored 5 rushing TDs for the year. The reason for that (barring the Charles injury) is the OL couldn’t give the QB time to move the ball. Matt Cassel played in 9 games and was sacked 22 times. He eventually got hurt. Tyler Palko played in 6 games for 11 sacks. And poor Kyle Orton, who was supposed to be the savior after Cassel’s injury, played in 3 games and was sacked only once (with one TD pass). The Chiefs ended up ranking 25th in passing. These QBs need some help. With a healthy Charles, the recent addition of Hillis, and a beefed up line, Cassel should be able to bring the Chiefs back to 2010 status.

Things could definitely turn around for the Chiefs in 2012; I really like the direction their team is headed in. With a dynamic backfield in Charles and Hillis now, selecting DeCastro makes sense to bolster the protection for Matt Cassel so they don't have to go through multiple quarterbacks again. I don't think this is a big reach for DeCastro, but would it be a surprise to see him be selected before Riley Reiff?

The Seattle Seahawks are on the clock next (pick has been in from Jon @ DBN).
